419 May Be Nigeria Next Emergency Number. by talentarena(m): 10:52am On May 09, 2015
I was watching the news some days back when an advert came up about security numbers to call and report crimes ( asking for bail is a crime ). And I was just sad to the point of it became funny because the numbers were more than 20 different 11 digit phone numbers. I was like; with all the
billions pumped into Nigeria’s security sector, Nigeria’s security sector still go around buying N100 sim cards for us to call? How in Heavens name is anyone going to remember those numbers in times of emergency? In America they have the famous 911. In Nigeria the easiest to remember 3 digit combination is 419. That number has meant Negative things for far too long. Its about time we put it to good use and turn its meaning to positive.

GOD BLESS THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

@ mods FP; so it can get to the relevant bodies. It's quite easy to remember.

@Mods learn to help Nigeria by posting what is relevant to its development; not tribal fights.

Lol. There is a 112 number already, it's working, dial it and see. 911 works too, but the police and the rest of emergency agencies are not tuned in yet, they're still slacking. Every police unit should be connected to that number as a policy that has consequences if not implemented. Every police office should have a working phone number and any call from the 112 number which is unanswered or Is "switched off" should be punished with dismissal of heads of that police or emergency unit, that's how you get systems working

UPDATE: Sorry, the correct number is 112. I've updated

For you to share this now on nairaland shows many have not shown interest. Change it to 419 and even a dog in your village will tell you the police call centre dial.

Yeah many Nigerians don't know it exists because the stupid government agencies are not doing their jobs. They could use bulk SMS and inform every Nigerian about the emergency number, they could also mandate every GSM operator to send daily or weekly alerts to all their subscribers educating them on situations they could use the number, but they're still busy eating their national cake while the operators are spamming us daily with unsolicited SMS alerts

The 112 does exist but I feel it's useless. Cos i dnt believe calling the number during emergency mean help is on the way especially if it involves the police

419 should be the new emergency number in Nigeria as it is easy to remember.
