I have friends that have almost everything they wanted while in school and were still rusticated out of school. In fact, I have come to realize that a child/daughter should not be too pampered to succeed academically because suffering and managing a little resource is part of education that could not be enhanced within the four walls of classroom. In other words, little percentage of students that have everything with ease while in school take learning with all seriousness.

While in school, the money for my upkeep is nothing to write home about as it barely last for three weeks. In fact, all my clothes were three - a jig-jag jeans and two trousers. Despite this, I managed to come out with good result and I always thank God for such experience cos the memory of how I drank only garri for five days, how I used to make photocopies of important textbooks no matter how harsh a lecturer was, how I lodged with my friends on campus for a year with different friends without my own accommodation, how I would have arranged my clothes inside Ghana must go prior to the final paper, etc cannot be easily erased from my mind just like that, just to mention a few. The irony of it all is that if you see me physically today, you would hardly believe it that I have had such kind of experiences in the past.

It is all about determination and perseverance: with strong willingness and determination, there would be a way out of every predicaments.

50 pupils in a class in Abuja school

When we first embarked on our Books Behind Bars Project, - the establishment of libraries and functional education programs in adult and juvenile prisons in Nigeria, little did we know that we would be drawn into establishing libraries in public schools. In fact, we did not know that many of our primary and secondary schools, located right in our cities, like the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, had no libraries and basic infrastructure. Perhaps, like many Nigerians, we were unaware of the realities that characterise and deeply set apart the rich and the powerful away from the weak and the poor in Nigeria.

 But we received three pallets of primary school books and decided to reach out to schools. Three public primary schools have benefited so far and we are set to expand.



One of the benefiting schools and perhaps the neediest of them all is the LEA Nurudeen Nursery and Primary School, Karu, Abuja. Located opposite St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Karu, along Karshi Road, it was established on the 10th of December 2009, and has a population of about four hundred and ninety six (496) pupils, all of whom are Muslims. The Head teacher told us that the pupils are from very poor background and most of them are orphans. The pictures reveal this fact.



In addition, the school has very poor staff strength, just 12 teachers, leading to the merging of some classes. At the time of compiling this report, they were about 150 pupils in a class.  The Head teacher and the teachers told our staff that it has been impossible to teach. Our staff who compiled this report confirmed that she could not move around the class because it was too full, with some pupils sitting on the bare floor and many sleeping. Our camera could not capture the whole class in a picture.



The school is in a dire need of teachers, about 10, according to the Head teacher to split the classes so that teaching and learning can take place.  But it has other needs too including water, computers, and furniture such as table, chairs for pupils and teachers, as well as sporting equipment, among others.



CURE-Nigeria has recruited six graduate interns to teach in the school at the moment, while permanent solution is being sought with respect to teachers.

In my opinion, i believe every student is given some amount of (pocket) money for up keep. Hence with proper planning at the beginning of the semester (no 1) you gonna have food to eat (maybe not 3 times daily) and you won't have to trek to school EVERYDAY. I swear d person Ain't gonna fail.

Even with all dix things girls is still gonna give lecturers free pucies for higher scores and d guys who surfer to read or block their course will still fail or get low grade.

You have a point, but what about those students that always find it difficult to pay their school fees ? How will they eat? How will they buy handouts when they are yet to pay their school fee

Stop swearing guy,ahah...e go fail for Africa sef....I take 3k per month and I have photocopies to make including assignments,I will buy food stuffs to for s month no girl,nothing ..Bros I read wif hunger........I no ho lie you ehn....the person go fail.
