Zoning system and competency in Nigeria political sphere are all good but they contradicts one another.


Looking at the present slots for ministerial positions in the new elected government in nigeria, the battle between the six political zones for different positions in the apex is getting fierce. the question is



topic: should competency replace zoning in Nigeria?



zoning= what if the best man of a job is not is not giving a chance due to zoning

competency= what if the 36 ministerial positions are from three state in the whole federation due to competency




Note: they are all applied to other political position in Nigerian not distinctively ministerial positions alone.

We have competent hands in all the zones no matter the field...

I am an apolitical individual but to this i say yes..

competence should should determine these posts..

i think this zoning of a thing still fans the amber of tribalism and feeling of

marginalisation...

posts should be awarded on how competent not by zoning...

what will be your position if all the incoming ministerial positions are from southeastern part of nigeria

Zoning is a pdp invention. . .apc is strugglin hard tu change that mindset.

Change is constant buh very very slow as a process. .so for now, zoning will remain.

I have said before i am apolitical, so i dont know or care much about politics..

so to this i still maintain my stance, if a competent man from the north can do the job then its right to give it to him...

i want a true federal system of government where their is no easterner or westerner or northerner.. but just a Nigerian ..

so if we have this ideology of a Nigerian without attaching any further tag to it, then we can truly practise this ministerial appointments based on competence

Zoning is the only solution to reduce tension and geographical imbalance in a country like Nigeria.

There are competent people in all the zones. If zoning is jettisoned, it could pave way for majority tribes to dominate minority tribes. This was already the case in Nigeria and that is what gave birth to zoning in the first place.

The portfolios should go round. The only problem here is that those charged with the task of nominating individuals for appointments do so with political intentions, and that is the problem.

If we the masses would vehemently protest (non violently), certain appointments we view skewed, if we protest against a round peg in a square hole appointment, i believe that even while zoning, competent hands would be employed.

Aknowledged your apathy in politics but u are still a Nigeria and being governed either directly or otherwise.

federal system was introduced in Nigeria to represent such a huge heterogeneous make up of Nigerian society, then each ethnic group is urging to get represented in the apex with important positions and also Nigeria as a non homogeneous religious state, the feeling of being left out in the political makings especially issues concerning religious believes and its laws. Competency in this contest will bring row in the system.
seems to me that competency can only be apply in the already developed democracies like in the US where the presidency came mostly from West Virginia and they don't give a damn about it.

If nigeria was meritocratic, igbos would be vastly over represented in government. People will be mad to hear this but it's the truth. Everything that requires merit (education, sports, tech, acting and entertainment, beauty pagents, business, literature) already has an overrepresentation of igbos in preportion to their size and other groups complain but those are fields were its impossible to ignore merit and survive. So if nigeria is meritocratic, and more people from Imo state are accepted into universities that 3 SW states and 5 northern ones in most government sectors igbos will be overwhelmingly over represented because of the statistical facts. The nonmerit system benefits the north because if they get a 4 on their unity college enterance exam they pass where someone from Anambra needs 136 on that same test. Also, Edo Delta Bayelsa must be mentioned because they also score high and attend school frequently. Given the numbers in education we may never see another Kanuri Hausa or Fulani civil servant. Igbo society is built on merit and its members are trained to be competitive. Notibly more so than other groups.

That's actually one of the loopholes in competency if applied in all sphere of Nigerian endeavour both politically and other programmes

All heterogenous societies have some form of zoning, jettisoning it will ultimately lead to anarchy

It is a very dicey situation considering the fact that if appointment were to be based on competence, some zones will av few slots hence start agitating but then i still feel every zone must have @ least one person who can do the job well.


Problem is, a lot of them are hiding.



So, IMO, shop for people who can do the job from the zone and simply put the best person there.


If there is none, go to another zone.
