GenerousLord:1: I gave that as an illustration. I won't be happy that my child failed to secure a job. But I would be more sad if he fails to also find something to do with the knowledge dat he acquired from school. Now I ask you, which is better; to sit at home and complain abt everytin u can complain abt on an empty stomach or to hawk the pure water and gala? 2: I've answered your question |
| Re: Excuses Graduates Give For Not Starting Their Own Business by GenerousLord: 10:42pm On May 17, 2015 |
LaurelP:In answer to your question, none is better coz I won't be glad to see my child who must have acquired degree(s) struggling through the challenges of life by hawking sachet water and gala. What lesson is he gonna send to his younger ones when he engages in stuffs like this? I think there are better ways to come out of this unemployment mess and not the hawking of sachet water and gala. I mean, that's not the way a graduate should think even when he intends going into sachet water business. He shouldn't do it like the way a primary school leaver would do it, rather in a unique way that would expose his ingenuity. |

GenerousLord:The OP is just using gala and pure water as example, what is trying to point out is that no money is too small to start a business, and been a uni or poly grad, you must be able to re-configure ur self even thou you were not trained to be an entrepreneur, must you study business administration b4 you could be able to manage a small business? That is why some grads are unemployable. |

If a madman put a gun to your head and said start a small business or I go shoot, you would do it. The reason why you say you can't is because you don't want to but when things get desperate hunger will drive a wolf to look for ways to bring in food Business skills can be learnt by anyone willing. Its really about the desire Dyt: |

GenerousLord:Like I said, I used dat as an illustration. It was u who attached "hawking" to it, I never used the word hawking in my post. And of all the examples I gave, you only saw the purewater and gala part! What I'm saying in essence is dat generally, graduates can do well for themselves by starting small and with the knowledge they acquired in school, make something out of nothing. Thanks |

This is a good write up and actually goes a long way to show that when people let off ego and pride, they can do wonders for themselves. But as usual, there will always be excuses and reasons to explain inabilities than abilities people need to wake up to the realities of existence There are no jobs and no Government in the World has ever created jobs for all its job-hunters, even in the United States, millions are jobless The earlier job seekers make efforts to employ themselves, the better their mental health |

I have come to realise that the greatest impediment is their ego and certificate and above all most of them even here in Nairaland stay with their parents and lack responsibility. I will advise them to leave their parents house, go to another part of town where they know less people, stay there, then hutsle When hunger don beat them nobody go tell them to think, but they are dependent, at 30 you will still see a guy staying with his parent. that is a curse and you cant progress with that mentality GO AND STAND UP...NO WONDE THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE IT IN LAGOS ARE IMMIGRANTS, COS THEY HAVE NO FALL BACK POSITION SO THEY MUST HUTSLE LaurelP: |

If you want to be successful, first get rid of girls by not going after them. But they could be friends but not intimate. Second, bring out an idea that you are zealous to execute no matter how long it takes. Third, do not be desperate, everything comes with time. Do not expect to get millions all in one month. This is a mentality that needs to be broken in Nigeria. |

GenerousLord:excuses and more excuses, and worrying about what others think. This is EXACTLY the point the op is tryig to raise. Now you are bringing in sentiments as reason to remain unemployed. What will the father say....thats an unproductive, pathetic and myopic reasoning. No excuses for not trying. This is exactly the op's point in No.2 : overbloated ego. It the damn father is not comfortable with his childs decision on business path, then the father should employ his child. If you cannot employ your child, dont tell them where to work or what to do. This generation is different from your fathers generarion. Now, its only the fittest that survive. Do what you can to survive |

Sell purewater because ? Is that why we spent 4-5 years in school? I'm sure you were only kidding anyway, albeit your message was duly received. However, the truth is not every one will/should be business owners. If we all owned businesses of our own, who would be the employee to help business(es) thrive & reach organizational objectives? We are all unique in our own different ways, and we should learn to respect that. We all have different strengths & competencies. You said a thing about Jumia &Dangote starting small. "Starting small" is this context I would like to believe is subjective, so I'll let that slide. Mr A's starting small, could be Mr. B's "I've arrived". However, the crux of this post should be skill acquisition. Any skill at all, even better when it's related to your field of undergraduate study. Nairaland thrived based on Seun's skill at the time, and his tenacity of purpose perhaps. But then, he had a skill. A relevant one at that. Not just some "buying & and selling sachet water" kind of thing lol. No disrespect to those doing that though. May God help us all. |

queebeediva:Nobody will give you capital to start an idea (ideas fail all the time). Start by offering catering services to birthday celebrants, wedding, end of the year celebrants, companies, AGMs, etc. By the way can you cook? what experience do you have? This and many more will determine the viability of your biz and the tendency to pay back. I hope your intention is not to employ caterers and a manager, while you sit back waiting for your sales girls to serve you breakfast, lunch and dinner. |
