I have observed two things about cults.
Firstly, it has speed far beyond the boundaries of Universities where it started. We now have artisans, community youths etc who are illiterate and semi illiterate as part of the group.
Secondly, it is for low lives who consider themselves to be at the bottom of the social ladder with little or no chance to influence those community. They join a cult because it gives them a false sense of security, belonging and power to do whatever they never thought they can do.
Cult group started as pressure groups by student against the defunct military government headed by IBB. They wielded power, staged protest and where respected by government, now it's an ugly monster we hate to see.

To be sincere with you, the unmerited brashness and bashing that our society at large give to these 'Frat' guys makes it difficult for a lot of them who might have a change of heart come out openly to say so.

Agreed, their action/inactions are antisocial. However imagine one who has come out to say I'm no more interested and the world outside starts to condemn him. On the inside, some are pissed of at him for leaving them. It then becomes double trouble, caught between the devil and the deep sea.

In my opinion, it would be a good thing to re-integrate such ones back into society. Proper guidance and counselling for such ones won't be a bad idea as it would help them develop their sense of self worth. It could also give their lives a proper and defined direction.

The government is doing little, NGOs are already overwhelmed, religious bodies are not effective to dissuade prospective recruits, we come online to condemn ourselves. How then do we find a solution to this menace? If some comments on this thread are true, cultism has swallowed many states. Other States are half swallowed.

WHAT CAN WE ALL DO TO STOP THIS TREND?
To be honest with you, the society has a right to rebuke in the strongest term when a known and notorious cultist decide to call it quits. They can't just in a whiff forgive and forget especially if they have suffered directly or indirectly from their activities.

Experience have shown that after the initial rebuke, if the renouncer is genuinely a changed person, most people will come to terms that he/she should be forgiven and be accepted as a worthy member of the society, though a number of souls will continually taunt them by making them a negative reference point at any given instance. The best thing such people can do is to accept the societal backlash as their penance in good faith, then strive and be focused in continuing their new found part to peaceful existence. With time, the societal ill feelings towards them heals.

I agree completely with you that proper guidance and counseling for such ones won't be a bad idea as it would help them develop their sense of self worth , which will be beneficial to the society in the long run. While we seek to reintegrate them back into the folks of sane citizenship, the initial backlash against them shouldn't be watered down cos it sends a strong message that their cult membership is not only detrimental to them but it is an anomaly to societal norms.

Time heals everyone . . . . . .

It is no longer news that several youths have
been killed in a gruesome manner in the recent
cult war in Benin City, Edo State capital.

The renewed cult war, which has left a lot of
casualties loitering the street of Benin has
reportedly calm down following the deployment
of the federal crack squad ordered by the
Inspector General Police, Mr Solomon Arase.
Before the IG’s deployment of special squad,
bodies of young men had littered everywhere
in the metropolis.

Meanwhile, some of the cult groups have
started burying their own, which they call
“fallen soldiers” or “victim of war.”
Some members of the Supreme Eiye
Confraternity (Bird men), popularly known for
wearing blue beret, were recently pictured,
burying one of their own in Benin City.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that one of the
state government officials that were arrested
on Wednesday, May 13, by the federal crack
squad deployed by the IG to curb the senseless
killings in the state, identified the man
wearing a half face cap with a bandana tied
around it as, Engr. David Olukoga.

46-year-old Olukoga, is the Chairman, Edo
State Committee on War Against Indiscipline
and Senior Special Assistant on Youth
Enhancement to the state governor.

From the pictures below, you will see several
members of the eiye secrete cult group
wearing the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) vest
alongside the cult’s blue beret on their head
during a burial possession.

Edo State has been marred with cult
activities in recent times. The major
opponents have been the Eiye, , and
Maphite groups.

Some days back, officials of the Edo state
police command arrested 11 people including
four state government officials suspected to
be leaders of different cult groups in the
state.
