Sustain Jonathan's Education Legacies- Yakubu Gowon Tells Buhari by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:10pm On May 19, 2015
FROM PAUL ORUDE, BAUCHI

Former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon has called on the president elect, General Muhammadu Buhari  not to abandon but to sustain the huge investment and sacrifices made by President Goodluck Jonathan in the education sector.

General Gowon gave the advice at the weekend in Bogoro, Bauchi State, during the inauguration of the Bogoro Community Centre of the National Open University (NOUN).

“I support the huge investment and focus on education sector by the incumbent administration,” the former head of state and founder of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC said.

“All of you that  have been elected into various  political offices at all levels must make sure that you give education the priority it deserves in whatever you people are discussing According to him, “I know Buhari as a young officer when I was his Commander In Chief. He respects every Nigerian and I   know he will serve Nigeria well. He will build upon what has been built by the Federal Government and the past leaders.

“So, let us appreciate what the present administration has done.”

The former head state known for the famous  No Victor, No Vanquished slogan after  the Nigerian Civil war fought between 1967 and 1970, opined that when more schools are opened, more prisons would be shut but however, emphasised that education must go with sound character.

“Real education teaches us how to acquire knowledge, understanding and wisdom, which enable us to solve the problem of the society. Since education should be used to solve problems, let’s work hard to ensure excellence in the education system,” he said.

General Gowon commended the Federal Government’s huge investment in the education sector particularly through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND)  and called on all stakeholders in the sector to work hard to restore the lost glory of education in the country.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Professor Vincent Tenebe, disclosed that the Bogoro Study Centre is the ninth community study centre, which brings the number of study centres in the country to 63.

Tenebe said the Bogoro Community Centre would not have been possible without the visionary initiative of TETFUND Executive Secretary, Professor Suleiman Bogoro.

He said: “Motivated by his concern for the welfare and progress of his community, this distinguished academic and administrator of no mean repute took it upon himself to champion the establishment of a community study centre of the National Open University in Bogoro. We commend this pragmatic administrator for his thoughtfulness and concern for the welfare of his people.”

In his goodwill message, Professor Bogoro said he was elated that the former head of state honoured the invitation to be the special guest of honour at the commissioning of the study centre.

Professor Bogoro explained that the hall in the study centre has been named after General Yakubu Gowon as a mark of respect for his commitment to keep the nation united and his dedication to education, which saw him studying up to doctoral degree level after  being head of state.

“Gowon represents excellence and decorum. We, as young men must reverence people like Gowon and make them a reference point,” he said.

PMB has said it before that the good programs will be sustained while the bad ones will immediately be discontinued.

It's not any rocket science.

Asking an illiterate to sustain education policies seems like a misplaced advise.

A man that wrote and supposedly passed WAEC but till date no results and you want him to sustain education? Story for the gods.

Buhari is only concerned with sharing 5000 naira monthly to almajiris.
