lexdino it seems i failed at explaining.

given an nxn square. eg a 4x4 square:
The math simply says that: (and observe the progression I pointed out in this)

There is 1 square that is 4 x 4
4 squares that are 3x3
9 squares that are 2x2
and 16 squares that are 1x1

giving a total of 30.

if you follow the progression, you can then predict the number of squares in any nxn square instead of having to count.
