[size=14pt]The answer is 40. Here is how. Let us assume those little squares do not exist. We have, Readily apparent squares=4^2=16. We can get a 3^2 square in four places. This equals 16+4=20 We can also divide the square into four places. To give us 20+4=24. We can also get a cross composed of four intersecting squares. This gives us 24+4=28. There is a square in the middle of the bigger square. This gives us 28+1=29 Then there is the square itself. Giving us 29+1=30. We can now recognize the little squares. It is readily apparent that they add up to ten. Four in two places. Plus the outer frame in two places. This gives 30+10=40. Since the question focused on the black squares, we can safely assume that we do not need the frames, lol. Therefore, our final answer is 40. Q.E.D I dare any mathematician here to prove me wrong, if not, well. Congratulations to those who got forty. If there is, well. Let's see your evidence.  [/size] |
