Gud morning sah. I use plastic ponds and I stocked 625 juveniles. When I sorted them early dis month I discovered about 111 of d juves were gone (most likely to cannibalism). I change their water every 2 days.
@Korel9, what's sizes of plastic ponds & how many Juveniles in each. Also how old are the Juveniles now?. Tnx

@ JuveFarms

I use an industrial tank of 1000liters and a water tank of close to d same capacity.
But if I may confess, the water level isn't great cos I actually purchase water.
So could that be a growth hindering factor? Tnx sah.
The water tank has abt 300+ jumbo sized (2 mnths after I stocked them as juveniles) and d industrial tank has 130+ average sized with a maximum level of 100liters of water.

This is interesting bro. But is the seed readily available.
.
yeah though it's location dependent. since it's a non conventional feedstuff, it's not readily available in commercial quantity.

Thanks a lot you all, i think i have to learn the basics well and act meticulously so as nt to run into dept. I will start with as low as 400 as you all hve suggested. I thought i cud do this myself better still employ good hands and supervise with my life but now i realise it could all be to no avail. Am starting my home work asap and will love to share my problems here with yah all.

my Oga, I really appreciate ur zeal, I heard Nigeria imports tonnes of fishes every year while we can farm same here so I took d zeal as u have it here. after all the advice like u got it here I still decide to go for 8000 tho doing that on my own risk. the stock will b 6wks tomorrow from fingerling and the are doing well, I have lest than 20 dead so far (that's d ones I notice). so bro don't b discouraged. after digging ur ponds u can treat with lime and leave it for 7days b4 stocking, then u re good to go. check my thread on agricnetworkforum "up coming fish fermer'. there u ll c how I start and ask ur qstns. thanks

I will like to know if there is anyone currently using Top feed in the house. it is been sold for N3900 in Osogbo compare to Vital feed of 4500 but I don't just want to go for it because of low price without knowing its effect on the growth of fish. Thanks.

I have been using top feed for two weeks now and the fishes is rushing them, the I didn't notice any negative effect.
pls come o, u said 3900? I do buy @ 4200 here in ilorin

I have a question on cannibalism. Is it possible for a fish to eat a smaller fish and finish it within 3days (that we change water) and not leave even the head or the bones?
Depends on the size of the fish, three days is enough, but the bones and skull will be visible.

@korel9, Catfish farming is no Rocket science, if u feel your management proceedure is wrong, probably its wrong. Were is your Ponds Location, 100litres Maximum in 1000litres Capacity tank, I wonder wots Minimum just a taught thou. @ 2months after stocking Juveniles Sizes we should be looking @ 300+ Melange. I also strongly advice current fish farmer& intending ones to try as much as possible to cut down on cost (Water,Boosters, etc) Boosters is no medication for Runts to turn Shooters. Tnx

no it won't affect in fact it helps them more at least it's good to start feeding them 2mm size of feed.multi feed is OK too in fact I used multi feed to the table size and I see a lot of differences in their weight. happy farming.

1.8mm and 2mm is too small for post juveniles.. 3mm is the ideal size to feed juveniles.

Consider the costs too... Coppens is too expensive to use all through. He shd try Vital feed or Top Feeds.

Yes you are very right, volume matters a lot but its d quality (weight and size) dat now determines the profits in d long run. A farmer should take calculated risks. An infant does not start eating adult food frm birth, its a graudal process.

GOOD NEWS TO PRACTICING AND PROSPECTIVE FARMERS!!!!

For practicing farmers (fish farmers), it is no news that the price of both local and imported floating feeds keeps sky rocketing on a daily basis( an average of N350-N450/kg) which means a farmers cost of production is getting high on the daily basis but the same can not be said about the cost of fish per kilo at the farm gate as the price remains at an average of what it has been in the last decade (i.e N350-N400 for melange and N480-N550),

Mean while the cost of feed accounts for about 80% of a farmers expenses on each stock, therefore it becomes difficult for an average farmer to make profit (if not run at lost) with the feed price situation. The cost of production is getting high every day but the selling price of fresh fish per kilo at the farm gate remains what it used to be.

Also the price of feed material for pelleting local sinking feeds are also getting high everyday but one can still make quality and cheap feed when compared in terms of price to the local floating and imported feeds.Although locally pelleted sinking feeds are not as effective like the local and imported floating feeds and thus they do not give good results like the floating feeds in the area of water management, digestibility, palatability and nutrition.

But what makes the almighty floating local and imported feeds so effective and achieve all the said results? They are able to achieve these results because they float and they are steamed cooked at temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius which is the reason why they are nutritious, palatable, have great water stability and are easily digested by the fishes. These factors are very essential for a fish farm to be successful and well managed.

Here is the good news!! At RUYEMCO FEED MILL we have quality locally made floating fish feeds that is highly nutritious ,palatable and with good water stability. Materials are locally sourced from good source and steamed cooked before they are extruded to pellets sizes ranging from 1mm- 8mm available at an affordable prices ranging from an average of N240/kg. Also available at RUYEMCO FEED MILL is sales of feed materials and concentrates for fish farming, piggery and poultry. Also we do pelleting/extruding service of floating fish feeds for farmers who have their own special almighty formula for their fish farming practice.

Delivery also available within the south south and south west region of the country for now. Contact Michael on 08167488947 or 09095720991 for more information and order inquiries.

Please, is their no way one can cut costs on the feed like the local feeds?
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Matt2020(m): 9:16am On May 26, 2015
House please I need urgent assistance. My fish has been consuming 1bag per meal but since Sunday they can't even finish half bag. Today when I reduced the water in earthen pond, I suspect there may be bacteria in the pond because every object (Sand bags, sticks & d rest) in the pond has grown white hair on their bodies and the body of some of the fishes are turning whitish also.

Kindly help me with the kind of treatment I could apply pls.
