Chapter One

Damien sat on the floor of the black van with his hands tied behind his back. He knew he was in a van and he knew the color because he saw it before a hood was thrown over his face.

Only some minutes ago, he was walking around the streets of Lagos with a folder containing his documents in his hand, looking for a job. He had repeated the same routine for several weeks now since he completed his service to the country without any breakthrough.

He was passing by an electric pole when he saw what looked like an advertisement of a vacancy posted on it. He stopped to look and realized it was for a marketing job. He studied Chemistry in the University so he felt the advertised job was not in line with what he studied. 'Let's give it a try', he told himself.

He brought out his phone and called the number on the poster. It rang the first time. No response. On the second try, there was a response. The person on the other end of the line was talking about the nature of the job and the benefits to be derived by working for their firm.

From his job hunting experience, he knew immediately the lady began speaking that it was one of the health affiliates who required payment first for what they referred to as a 'Licensing/Registration' fee of about $68, before one began working with them.

While he was still on the phone, a very pretty lady came out of a shopping mall with grocery bags in her hands. She was about 5.8" tall and fair in appearance. She had a figure that would make most men drool.

Suddenly she tripped and one of the grocery bags fell with the contents spilling out. Damien immediately ended the call since he knew he wasn't going to go for the job anyway, because he didn't have the money to pay for their 'Licensing' fee. Being the gentleman that he was, he quickly rushed to the aid of the lady.

The lady was surprised because no one had even cared to stop to help her before he did. This is Lagos. It's all man for himself.

After putting the groceries back into the bag, the lady thanked him profusely. Since he was tired of walking around that day, coupled with the fact that the lady seemed to be nice, and beautiful, he offered to carry her grocery bags to the taxi park. She smiled because it's been a while since anyone treated her that way without knowing who she really was.

He struggled with the grocery bags in both his hands and the folder in his armpit. As he was going towards the taxi park, she directed him to the area private car owners parked their cars. 'Wow, so she has a car', he thought. She smiled once again when she saw the obvious confusion on his face.

She stopped behind one of the exotic cars in the car park. It was a silver colored Chevrolet Camaro. Damien almost gasped when he saw it. It's been a while since he saw such a car up close, and to think that this seemingly 'ordinary' lady drove the car, it was too much for him. 'She must be super rich', he thought. 'Is this your car?', he asked her.

She smiled and was about telling him her father got the car for her after graduation when suddenly, two heavily built men and a lady approached them, with two of them displaying guns carefully hidden in newspapers. The guns were 9mm berettas affixed with silencers. Both of them holding the gun looked like they knew what they were doing. They were not trembling and their fingers were already trigger-ready. They definitely meant business.

The whole situation materialized within seconds. The scene played out like they had rehearsed it several months before. The lady and one of the men with a gun pointed the guns at both of them and the one without a gun, obviously their leader, spoke up with a croaky voice. 'Make any noise or draw any attention to us and we'll blow up your fvcking heads! Now just quietly follow us to that van!' He pointed to an idling van parked at side of the road.

Damien was shocked and confused. He didn't know what to do at that moment. He recognized what was happening as a kidnapping and he presumed the lady was the original victim. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time - an accidental victim.

He wanted to speak up and tell the kidnappers he didn't know the lady, but he realized that it would have been cowardice on his part. Besides, the kidnappers could have killed him since he already saw their faces. He decided to play cool.

Tears were already dripping down the lady's eyes. She was pleading with them to take all the money on her and leave them alone. They didn't seem to pay attention.

The lady who was one of the gang members grasped Damien by his arm while the other man grabbed the lady by her arm, both striking the lovers' pose while still pointing the gun on them, out of the view of passersby.

They all walked to the van, with their leader at the front. Immediately they got to the van, their leader got into the front seat and both Damien and the lady were pushed into the back of the van and they zoomed off.

Immediately the van began moving, their faces were covered with a black hood and both of them were thoroughly searched for any phones or communication devices. Damien's hands were tied behind his back to the lady's hands which were also tied behind her back, after which he felt a pinch on his neck and some seconds later, he was deep in sleep...

Damien woke up later when he began feeling a poke at his side. He didn't know for how long he had been out, but he knew they were still on a highway, because the van was still moving very fast.

The gang members that were with them at the back of the van were no more there. He and the lady were alone at the back of the van.

Damien realized the hood had been taken off, but he was still tied to the lady. The poke he felt was from the lady he was kidnapped with. She was trying to find out if he was awake yet. Obviously she woke up before he did.

He tried to wriggle out of the rope but realized the kidnappers did a good job in tying them. He still didn't know for how long he was out. He wondered what was injected in him that induced such an effect. 'Diazepam?', he thought.

He still didn't have any idea who the lady was, but he knew if there was going to be any rescue operation, it would be centered on her because no one might notice he was missing until it was too late. He had just moved to a new apartment before he began job hunting and he had not full acquainted himself with his neighbors.

He held the lady's hand as if to comfort her. He didn't even know her name and was sure she didn't know his either.

At first both of them didn't speak. They just sat there in stunned silence, with him thinking about what was to happen to them or what he could do.

He tried analyzing the situation in his head. She was definitely the daughter of an important person in the society. But who? He didn't know.

He tried analyzing the kidnappers. The lady in the gang acted like she was the girlfriend or wife of the leader who was the smallest in the group. The leader didn't handle any weapon himself, and he looked like he was very good with his fists in fighting. The other gang member who was the biggest among the group was obviously their executioner or 'Striker' as he heard the leader call him. He didn't see the driver so he couldn't analyze him. All together, they were a 4-member gang. If there were others, he didn't know about them.

He was still having those thoughts in his head when he heard her say, 'I'm Funmilayo Coker', while squeezing his hands as if to give him a hand shake, 'Nice meeting you'.

He was shocked when he heard the name 'Coker'. The 'Coker' family were a very important family in the country. So his analysis were partly correct. She was indeed the daughter of an important man because he had heard that name often in the news.

Col. Kolawole Coker was the Director-General of the SSS in the country who was recently appointed by the President. The sudden resignation of the former DG raised eyebrows due to the several allegations laid against him. But all of a sudden, the news died totally. No one talked about the issue anymore.

'Are you by any chance related to Col. Kolawole Coker?' he asked her. She said, 'He is my uncle actually. My father is his younger brother.' 'Oh, so your father would be the C.E.O of C.O.D Group?', he asked again. She nodded her head.

Chief Oluwadamilare Coker, Funmilayo's father, was the Chairman/CEO of the C.O.D Group. The company had investments in Banking, FMCG and the oil sector. They were indeed a rich family.

Damien knew this was definitely a kidnapping for ransom. But how much would the kidnappers demand? He didn't know. Would they demand a ransom for him, or would they just let him go? He didn't know that either. All he knew was that he just had to recall his skills and experiences if he was to survive this ordeal.

'My name is Damien Abbah', he said with a slight chuckle, 'I definitely wished we were in a better situation, but it good to meet you too.'

"Yeah, I wish we were in a better situation..."

"So, how long till you are missed?"

"Two hours, maybe more... I was to visit my friend and my mum asked me to get some groceries for her on my way back. My friend told me she went out and was on her way back home, so I decided to get the groceries first. That was when we met. If she doesn't see me, she might think I changed my mind on visiting her. So until my mum decides I've stayed out too late and calls my phone which is already switched off, I'm on my own...
"

"Hmmm..."

"So how long till anyone notices you are missing?"

"Two days, maybe more..."

"Huh?! Why?"

"I just moved to a new apartment, and I've not familiarized myself with my neighbors so I mostly keep to myself. They wouldn't notice, trust me..."

"This is serious..."

"Yeah, very serious..."

They talked about other things, using the time to get acquainted with each other. She told him she just came back from Canada where she completed her studies and was to join her father in the family business. He told her he was job hunting as he had just completed his youth service.

They were still talking when they felt the van slow down and begin to take a bumpy road. After several minutes, the van stopped and the door was opened...

They were still talking when they felt the van slow down and begin to take a bumpy road. After several minutes, the van stopped and the door was opened.

Damien and Funmi turned around to see four stern looking faces staring directly at them in the dim light. It was already dark outside and visibility was low.

Damien was looking around, trying to carry out feasibility studies of his environment when he heard 'Striker' speak up while waving a gun at them, 'Both of you, out! Now!!'

If their leader's voice was croaky, Striker's voice was even more 'croakier'. His voice sounded like thunder. Funmi shuddered at the sound of his voice.

They both came out of the van and Damien began his feasibility studies once more. He realized they were in a fenced compound. The fence was so high and laced with barbed wires that the thought of scaling through it was an herculean task. In the compound was an uncompleted bungalow. The building looked like it was uninhabited, but there were some light bulbs outside the house which showed electricity was connected in it. 'Or were there some people already living in the building?', he thought.

He was still trying to scan through to get more information when he heard the voice of the leader. 'And you, who the hell are you?'

'Huh?! Me??', Damien replied while feigning ignorance, trying to gather his thoughts to give a perfect response.

'No, your ancestors! Who are you to her?!', the leader screamed back at him, while pointing to Funmi.

Damien realized the situation was getting out of hand. He knew any answer he gave or any action he took from this point on could determine his fate. They obviously didn't know who he was or what he was capable of, so he had to take advantage of that. Besides the leader just asked him who he was, he knew he didn't have to appear weak, else he was gone with the wind.

'I'm Damien Abbah...', he spoke up with confidence.

'Of course you are Damien Abbah', the leader cut him short. 'I looked through your CV. Who are you to her? That's my question!', he asked him again with a fierce tone.

Damien was stunned. He had forgotten the events of the day that led him to where they were. He had forgotten the fact that when he woke up that day, the plan was to go job hunting not to get kidnapped.

'I'm nobody to her. I just met her today...', Damien replied.

'Perfecto!', the leader said while clapping and smiling mischievously, 'You are obviously valueless to us.' 'Striker!', the leader called out and shook his bent hand across his neck which gave Striker the sign to finish Damien off.

'Wait Sir!', Damien screamed, as he realized what they were about to do to him.

'Yeah? What is it?!', the leader asked.

Damien was shuddering slightly now. He didn't even know what to say, but he knew his next words if not spoken well or accepted, could be his last words.

'I might be of help to you sir...', Damien said, slightly stuttering.

The leader began laughing sarcastically to the amazement of his gang members. 'You, to be of help to us? How?
', the leader asked tauntingly.

'This is it!', Damien thought, as he had been silently praying for a way to convince these men not to do the unthinkable.

'As you know', Damien began after clearing his throat, 'plans like this might not be fool proof. There should be contingency plans, and I'm very good at making such plans.'

Damien stopped and looked at each of their faces. They were all silently staring at him, the leader especially. The leader suddenly burst into a round of laughter, and the others joined in. The leader looked at the driver and laughed even more. 'Draco, see this guy wan collect my job o...', he said to him and they burst into another round of laughter.

'Sir, I know what I'm saying. I have contacts in....', Damien tried saying, noticing that his well thought-out albeit short speech was a flop.

'Shut the hell up before you make me even angrier!! You think we are playing here?!!', the leader screamed back at him. 'Striker', he called out. 'Finish him!', he commanded.

Funmi looked on like she was in a trance. She didn't betray any emotions at all. It was as if her spirit was not there. Damien looked towards the sky and closed his eyes. In all the ways he thought he would die, he never thought of this. He always thought he was going to go down fighting like a brave man he thought he was. But here he was about to be gunned down like an animal.

Striker had already cocked and aimed his gun at Damien and was about to pull trigger. There was silence all around him except for the sounds of insects and birds chirping. He expected total silence soon which he hoped would be devoid of pain, but the voice he heard and the words startled him.

'Striker, wait! Obim, please let him be for now. He might be of use later. He could be an extra hand. And if he proves useless later, you can always end him. But for now, please just let him be.'

Damien was shocked! The voice he heard was from the lady in the group. His previous analysis was correct. She was the girlfriend or wife of the leader. But what he didn't know was if the leader usually listened to her advice.

The next words he heard from the leader were a relieve to him.

'Draco!', the leader called out. 'Yes boss!', Draco replied. 'You guys should take them to storage', he ordered. 'Yes boss!', Draco replied again.

Damien was relieved. The leader obviously usually listened to her advice. He thought about what the leader could have meant by 'storage', but the fact that he was still alive was something he pondered over.

He was led to the 'storage' by the leader's girlfriend, while Funmi who was still in her 'trance mode' was led by Draco. He concluded the lady was the leader's girlfriend because he couldn't find any ring on her finger as she held him.

So many questions ran through his head as they were led there.

'Why did the leader's girlfriend speak up for him?'
'What was her agenda?'
'How was he to make himself useful to criminals?'
'What would be his fate if he didn't or couldn't do anything?' 'What could he even do in this situation?'
'Would skills he learnt in the past prove helpful to him now?'

He was still having those thoughts when an iron door was opened before him. He was pushed inside and Funmi followed, and the door was shut with a loud bang.

Damien looked around him, shook his head and said to himself, 'Indeed, welcome to storage!'

Chapter Two

'Eniola!', Mrs Coker called out. Eniola came running from the kitchen to attend to Mrs Coker's call in the sitting room.

Mrs Coker had been suffering from acute arthritis for the past three years which seriously affected her mobility. She was mostly indoors except on special occasions.

Eniola was her younger sister's daughter who had studied Nursing in the university. After graduation, she spent almost a year working in the hospital where her aunt was later hospitalized when she became sick. Thereafter, she was employed by her aunt's husband, Chief Coker, to take care of his wife exclusively after her initial return from the hospital. Eniola became a kinda aide to Mrs Coker and they became very close. They were related, so that made things easier for her and she was paid even better than her other friends that worked in big hospitals. She didn't have to worry about feeding or accommodation as those necessities were provided for her.

There were two maids in the house, but since Mrs Coker trusted and always confided in Eniola, when ever she needed anything, she always called on her.

'Yes ma', Eniola replied as she got to the sitting room. 'Is Funmi back?', Mrs Coker asked her.

"No ma, she's not back..."

"But she left since morning."

"That's true, but she's not yet back ma."

"What could be delaying her?"

"I have no idea ma. You should call her to find out where she is..."

"Please help me bring my phone from my room."

"Yes ma..."

Eniola brought the phone to her and she dialed Funmi's number and the response she got was, 'the number you have dialed is currently switched off, please try again later. Thank you.'

"Switched off? Funmi never switches off her phone, what's happening?", Mrs Coker asked.

"Mummy, call her again."

She dialed Funmi's number again and got the same response. She was getting tensed. She asked Eniola if she had Bisola's (Funmi's friend) number. Eniola didn't have it.

It was already 9pm. Mrs Coker was visibly tensed and frustrated. There was still no word from Funmi. She tried calling her number several times with the hope that the call would miraculously go through. It was to no avail. She went with Eniola to Funmi's room to see if she could get any of her friend's number to call, perhaps she was with them. She couldn't find any. 'This is so unlike Funmi', she thought. She decided to call her husband, Chief Coker...
