I bought a she-goat as my birthday gift to add to my few flocks(broiler, cockerel, turkey and rabbit).

I bought it 2 weeks ago, I tied it up for those days but it doesn't stay for long and don't come home often after I let it loose. And it goes into an estate where it mingle with other goats, where goats are dreaded and killed.

I go to work daily though, my sister help feed it. Am off on Sundays to it attention. My doe is pregnant.

I have heard all manners of ways like, spit in their feed and recognize your voice (sounds fetish), daily feeding system till it's acquainted with you(my sister feeds it more, am at work). etc

Can you get a sort of constriction? A little space where you can lock it and feed it for two weeks straight?

After that, always put the goat's food inside that space don't feed her anywhere else. That will send a message of home. Then tie her outside but take it back when it gets dark so as to establish a routine.

That might work. Using a leash does not do much especially when there are other goats to mix with. You need to let her know there will always be food and water at her space and she will always come back. Just like watering holes for when they are in the wild.

And oh, you also need a special sound to call her with. When taking her food to the space, make sure you make that sound so she associates the sound with food. She will recognise that when you call for her, she will come running and don't beat or try those silly myths it is pointless.

Barnyard animals will go where they consider home and food, water and safety defines home to them

Procure stocks of yam, pile the tubers in conspicuous areas around yur compound with jars of water sitting nearby...according to my grand-uncle who is a renowned goat farmer, wid this method the goat will always come back home, and often!

Yes I have a small 8 by 8 feet in pen house, can I tie one of its leg and leave pen door open for it to graze outside and come back in to feed inside, when it feels like? thanks

I will bookmark this page cos I also could do with some useful tips here. I just paid for a small kid (female goat) from a neighbour with the intention of collecting it after it is weaned. My only concern is the kid not retuning home but sleeping at my neighbor's with its mother and siblings.

Tie the goat inside the pen for a like two weeks.
Then untie her and allow her roam the closed own for a week or so.

Don't feed or give the goat water outside the pen. And anytime the goat goes out and you bring her back, lock her inside the pen immediately

That is going to be hard. But as the goat gets older and you establish a feeding and sleeping routine, she might get used to it but I am not sure though.

But why do you all buy goats na? I prefer sheep. Sure they can be stubborn and a tad bit gullible and trusting but still I like them gentle and the have little wahala.

Plus they are a lot more beefy

I thought sheep's are more expensive to raise compared to goats.

Really? My neighbor used to have sheep that were just free ranging in his compound and i helped out once or twice. Nothing special (don't know about now). They were fed eri. That by product from making pap which was also what the goats ate

Speak to your vet though about feeding, care and treatment though.

I prefer sheep for being gentle and a lot more beefy than goat but folks here don't really eat much sheep except for ceremonial events so commercially it might not be as important as goats.
Plus they are really trusting so if your compound is not secure, they can easily be tempted by outsiders and stolen

thats why we are smarter than them

Sweep your compound or house and look for a cloth and pack the sand is what u swept in it, now tie it v on the goats neck. It will start disturbing u @ ohm. .....Tested and trusted

My best advice is to make her get use to u...n dat can only b acheived wit food....it 'll take time...say a month....feed her twice a day....n while feedn her make a sound always to get her attention...dsame sound always...for a month....den release her in d compound....bt always feed her tiwce a day...both morning n evenings...in doing dis u won't just mk her get used to u...bt also her children...no matr hw far dey go...dey must come back hm....in d evening to eat...I'm saying all dis frm experience...i'm into rams,goats n cows...it wrks for dem...bt nt dat easy for cows...only young once u bring up...

its used to me now, though still easily but she comes when i make sounds.

Aside corn by product, what affordable feed do you give your goats? Pix below is my goat i talked about.
