I wonder who sells these ideas to our ignorant politicians!
Nigeria is already blessed with natural gas in large commercial quantities...and we've not even commenced exploitation of that.
We are blessed with coal in equally commercial quantities.
The hours of daily sunlight in Nigeria alone can supply a meaningful percentage of our power needs if harnessed.
Smh...sigh.
At a time when the industrialized and developed nations are shutting down their nuclear plants and moving to wind and solar generation...we are building new ones!
Never mind that not one of our universities have any expertise on nuclear technology...or any practical R&D history on nuclear power generation.
Never mind that we have never been able to manage ordinary hydrothermal power plants for over 50 decades of independence. With all the so-called engineers working at NEPA/PHCN all these years!
Never mind that the silly federal character will be employed in recruiting experts to man the proposed nuclear facilities...where chiefs, generals and emirs will lobby for their children and relatives to be given jobs at which they have no clue!
For those who are not aware nuclear power generation is actually cheaper, safer and more environmental friendly than both coal and gas powered plants.
The emissions are lesser and cause less deaths on the aggregate than gas or coal plants.
But the IMMEDIATE EFFECTS of a radiation leak far outweigh all the pros.
Read up on Fukushima and Chernobyl.
The ONLY reason why Nigeria does not NEED to go nuclear now is...INCOMPETENCE, LACK OF MAINTENANCE CULTURE & CORRUPTION.

We simply do not presently have the discipline and knowledge to dispose spent nuclear waste.
This is a road to national disaster!
Some blackminded and black hearted cabals will still sponsor the sabotage of these plants both from within and without...thinking its the same as bursting gas pipelines.
The results of radiation leak will be felt for centuries...the entire surrounding cities have to be evacuated, land and water resources rendered useless.
Google the images of babies born in Chernobyl and Iraq after nuclear damages...you might not be able to eat your lunch today.

The black man has not evolved to that stage...where we can safely man nuclear power plants. Tribal politics, nepotism, cabal sabotage will always get in the way!
Let's improve our competence on gas and hydro plants first.

Call ur national assembly reps and indicate your refusal for that project to kick off!
I'm sure some devious IMF and world bank financiers sold those ideas to the empty minds we call our leaders.
Ordinary railways we can't build and run.
To even refine our own crude has proved herculean.
Say no to the citing of nuclear plants in Nigeria!
WE ARE NOT READY & CANNOT HANDLE IT!

Nonsense.
These people have not been able to handle hydro-electricity.
Why should I be confident that Nigeria can handle much more complicated nuclear installations.
Bros you are right. What happened when Nigeria entered space exploration some years ago? our satellite NIGCOMSAT got lost is space, never to be found till this day. Say No To Nuclear Danger In Nigeria!

Until then for the present day Nigeria is a BIG NO!!!

victorels:

We are better than this.

Instead of showing our fears for the Born to rule sect, why not champion the training of Igbo Engineers and Nuclear Scientist if there is anything like that, so that they can qualify to manage the plant when it is installed or built.

The only way Igbos can be relevant in Nigeria again is for them to champion advanced technology in Nigeria. They can only do so by Identifying skills for advanced and future technology and begin to train manpower to take charge of those technologies when they finally arrive.

Being prepared doesn't mean we should Identify the ills of our colleagues and cry about them for pity and help from foreigners but rather, out smarting them in any mischievous scheme if at all any exist.

Stop crying and hating and start planning.
We should own the brain and start reasoning.

Our crude oil will do same we don't have a take a far more dangerous option. If its that wonderful siting it in Katsina or far north is better since they are closer to source of Uranium supply from Niger republic. For me its an outright NO

anulaxad:
People are so ignorant.

Indeed, I am against nuclear power, but do remember it's produced by nuclear fission and the radioactive waste is disposed of extremely carefully.

Do not mistake Buhari for Jonathan.

We Nigerians and west Africa in General should be the ones controlling the nuclear power usage as Niger is the fourth biggest producers of uranium and we shouldn't shut out the idea of nuclear power because certain people are too ignorant(induces fear) to understand the benefits of it.

The benefits of nuclear power is more than its negatives; that cannot be said about fossil fuel power plants. For example Nuclear power can last for 1000 of years as they contain alot of energy per kg.

There are lots of desert -like looking lands in the north they should situate it there if they must and moreso its closer to source of raw material, Uranium from Niger. But I will rather say NO to the project complete NO

The thing I fear most about nuclear disaster is the aftermath wind that carries cancer causing radioactive materials as if it is carrying dust. Such wind can blow all over a country in a matter of hours, sharing cancer.

Even if it is built in 'Heeboland' as you have advocated, what's to say that the radioactive wind won't reach your village or house? Can you catch the wind with the palm of your hands, or tell it where not to go?

I endorse this thread.
Its true that Nuclear power is one of the cheapest mode of power generation. Just one or two fuel rods is enough to produce huge amount of power for years non-stop. it is very cost effective. With these advantages, Nuclear power seems to be the best alternative to power generation for a power hungy nation like Nigeria. But like all disadvantages, there are serious disadvantages of Nuclear power generation.
Chief among them is the Deadly Waste produced by nuclear power plants. Radiation is a very powerful substance with great ability to penetrate thick walls. A nuclear fallout as a result of negligence or accident will send radiations waves flying across the atmosphere causing serious health hazards to animals and plants. If just small amount of radiation waves can penetrate through walls, what will happen when large does of it escape into the atmosphere

Just read that the Federal government has selected Geregu in Kogi State and Itu in Akwa Ibom State as sites for proposed nuclear power plants in Nigeria. Please let all well meaning Nigerians tell the Federal Government that this is wrong for Nigeria, as we do not yet have the maintenance culture to have nuclear site. You need to see what happened in the town of Chernobyl,Ukraine that even has maintenance culture. Green trees turned red in moments and thyroid cancer ate the life out of Ukrainians who were not even in the nuclear plant during the accident.Say No to the Establishment of Nuclear Plant in Nigeria by liking this comment and by telling your friends to share this on social media. A stitch in time can save nine.

Last line: if they want power they can use coal that can only do little harm to the environment, BUT NOT NUCLEAR that can send cancer winds to several states in a matter of minutes.

When they want to build refinery they pipe our gas from Down south to Kaduna, they should better site it at Kaduna or Lagos as usual

Don't fight reality bro...won't work for you.
How many professors of nuclear technology do we have in the country?
How many independent companies do we have with practical knowledge of nuclear facilities?
Do we have a history of independent research and development...on any area of science?
Have you ever enjoyed ONE WEEK of uninterrupted light in this country?

Don't take the black pride thing too far...that will be stupid.
Evolving in terms of technology means being able to acquire, use and add to a body of scientific knowledge HERE IN NIGERIA/AFRICA.
We are not there yet.
Peace.

That's how it will always be. You can't cohabit for years without major issues and then all of a sudden you bring out issues where there's none just to fuel hatred and disunity. The only time you see Nigerians come together on social networks is when a Nigerian celebrity or Nigerians as a whole is attacked by other countries.
