How was the seizure & redistribution a good idea huh

Perhaps the Hausas need to also seize & redistribute the land owned now by Fulanis following their CONQUEST over them less than 300 years ago, abi huh
Well, considering most black farmers did not have enough land to live on, and also considering that most of the white owned farms were largely desolate....yes...a good idea.

But the ultimate point of my post really is that good ideas are not necessarily the best/wisest ideas. And a good idea, also can be spoilt by the implementation.

Largely desolate based on what criteria/data?

Kindly share. Thanks.

That's why I prefer oyibo man rulership, your country will grow. See how south Africa is like Europe and Nigeria is like ghetto. Thanx to longer oyibo rulership.
you are a Fool, a slowpoke. You are stupid because of your INFERIOR COMPLEXITY. the Boko haram that is destroying our country is created by White-albino people. The highest genocide was the transatlantic slave trade by white people. This white people has rhesus monkey blood in them. And about 40% of them are born with TAILS. all Knowledge and civilisation comes From The Black Man and Africa.

Reports of the time stated that some white owned farms had land lying fallow.

Also....by 1979...70% of the fertile land was owned by whites...who had 5% of the population.

But as I said....good ideas are not necessarily the best ideas.

Zimbabwe: New narrative on land reform

Similarly, the colonial shorthand of white and black farmers is still used, but in reality neither group is homogeneous. White farmers became famous because some were highly profitable and productive. Yet, as a group, at independence, white farmers were using less than onethird of their land, and most were not doing very well-one -third were insolvent and one-third were only breaking even. The white minority fought a brutal war to maintain its privilege and power, yet after independence, many in the white community took places in the new Zimbabwe. There are still white farmers like Keith Campbell who have built good relationships with land-reform farmers and other white Zimbabweans are involved in agribusiness.

Thanks for your response.

However the fact that land is fallow MAY not necessarily mean it is desolate. Ever heard of shifting cultivation?

Moreover, Mugabe should have found a more pragmatic way of GETTING land for interested black farmers instead of confiscation. Perhaps the experience of black Americans in the southern part of the USA after slavery was abolished could have being instructive.

Nevertheless, it is obvious that the old man did it for populist dividends to prolong his stay in power.

BTW, what % of the Nigerian population own oil wells in the Niger Delta and they are predominantly from which region of our country huh

Here is where the problem is

Mugabe in the year 2000 began taking over white owned farms...anmd redistributing it to black farmers.

While it was a good idea....it also wrecked the basis of Zimbabwe's economy.

Zimbabwe prior to the takeovers was heavily reliant on agric exports for forex. With the takeover....that source of forex...ie dollars....to back up the local currency vanished.

As a result....inflation started....which was made worse by continued overprinting to make up for cash losses....because there is no forex to back up the currency.

A big lesson for Nigeria (yes...Nigeria should be learning here!)......over-reliance on selling raw materials is not good for your economy.
Absolute rubbish. Zimbabwe is experiencing the effects of vicious western imposed economic sanctions placed on her because of the land redistribution program. The Zimbabwe govt (and the people, who keep voting in Mugabe) prefers that the country goes through the sacrifice of temporary economic disruption, rather than return to the status quo ante whereby 3% of the population (white) would own and control 90% of the land. Zimbabwe's problems would disappear the very minute western sanctions are lifted. Nevertheless the economy is recovering, and the land redistribution program has been a success. THAT IS THE TRUTH, SO STOP PEDDLING LIES.

Western Economic Sanctions on Zimbabwe:

http://www.thezimmail.co.zw/2014/09/29/economic-sanctions-common/

Sanctions have traditionally been applied since the colonial era to the present against some countries to achieve desired political and economic outcomes by imperialists..

Economic sanctions largely consist of the imposition of embargoes, trade and financial restrictions and diplomatic isolation. The most notorious economic sanctions should be the more than fifty-year old United States embargo on Cuba. Sanctions generally entail restrictions on international trade and finance that are imposed for political reasons. Traditionally, sanctions are measures applied in response to a perceived wrong doing by a state, such as an act of aggression against another state or human rights violations from the perspectives of international conventions.

Economic sanctions are the commonest form of sanctions imposed on a nation. They imply a calculated and deliberate government-inspired withdrawal of trade and financial relations, including technical cooperation.

Sanctions remain a blunt instrument which hurts large numbers. In an effort to refine the effectiveness of sanctions, there has been a shift towards targeted sanctions, which impose travel bans and the freezing of foreign bank accounts of targeted individuals or entities.

Declared sanctions are pronounced sanctions, general and targeted, that are normally legislated by the imposing countries especially the US and its western allies. Sanctions against Zimbabwe include the notorious Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (Zidera), which was signed into law by George Bush Jnr. Zidera is a sanctions bill legislated against Zimbabwe illegally, that is outside of the purview of the United Nations. The key provisions of Zidera include the denial of access to lines of credit in order to cripple a sovereign government’s economic programs.

Inevitably, the downstream impact has been felt by the ordinary person, who has to contend with devaluation, deteriorating health and educational facilities as well as reduced agricultural productivity through lack of access to financing and agricultural inputs.

The overall objective of Zidera is to create an enabling environment to nurture social and economic discontent amongst local populace towards the democratically elected government. - Stewart Murewa

My overall point...taking into the account the issues you raised....is that if you are dependent on selling a resource...you are essentially putting your economy at risk.

At which point I would like to use the example of China.

China's economy was weaker than that of many African nations once upon a time. However with industrial growth and development...the economy improved...and it is at a point where Western sanctions cannot harm it.

(Even the US too is an example. After its independence in 1776,it suffered sanctions from the UK. That forced the Americans on the path of industrial development.Yes..the Americans and British used to be sworn enemies.)

Whereas , most African countries rely on selling raw materials. That leaves them vulnerable to 1)Trade sanctions 2)Loss of revenue when the resource they were exploiting becomes redundant.3)Reduced revenue due to price fluctuations 4)Loss of jobs due to over-importation.

China cannot be touched by sanctions because it is self reliant.and industrial. African countries by contrast.

Which leads me to my ultimate point...beyond land redistribution....

If you are not industrial.you would be weak. Resource dependency is not good for development.

Back to Zimbabwe....Land redistribution was a good idea (if you read my post you should have noticed that). But when the source of your income is the same whites you do not want to anger....you have to be a wee bit pragmatic.

Yes...it sounds like selling out to the imperialists. But...this is Planet Earth.

I think what @bushdoc9919 meant by "desolate" is that some of the huge track of land held by white farmers were not cultivated, whilst many blacks had no farm holdings at all.

It was a ZANU-PF key promise during the war of liberation from white rule. Mugabe had to implement land reforms, but he went about it in a land grab manner. Taking very productive land under cultivation and giving them to ZANU-PF party officials on cronyism basis.

The black party officials who took them over simply wanted to do land speculation (re-sale to make profit). They never cultivated the land or kept livestock to generate economic activities the way white farmers did.

Many white farmers still wanted to stay, but there were consistent raiding of white farms, killings and rapes as a form of retaliation by so-called ZANU-PF war veterans. Mugabe did nothing to stop it. Eventually, one after the other the white farmers relocated to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, America, or UK. Some even came to Kwara State in Nigeria as late as during Gov Saraki's time.

And off course, with the way white farmers were being treated, most of whom were of British descent and were loyal to the old racist Rhodesian regime which Britain supported, Britain did their own damage by engineering economic sanctions. Over time, this tipped Zimbabwe over the scale. A very big lesson, that we have to pick the fight we can win in the long run.

If Mandela had allowed emotions to rule his heart, he could have reduced South Africa to ruins as well. Thank God for that wise Madiba. He tempered the anger and impatience of South African blacks yearning for economic empowerment. For this he received many accolades including the Nobel Peace prize

Many thanks for your concise narrative.

Most of us Africans are too emotional in a very crude, raw primitive way and not ready to make the NEEDED long term sacrifice, as individuals & societies for our personal & collective success.

There is a reason why China COLLABORATED rather than confront or antagonise its worst enemies- Japan, Britain, USA- while it invested in massively educating its people to develop its own technological capacity to generate wealth!!!

I agonise a lot about the condition and plight of the black man everywhere. Whether in Africa or in America where they have been there for over 2 centuries. They simply don't seem to get their acts together in areas where they have total control. Either, they are messing up what others have laboured to build, or they fall flat on their faces if they have to start from scratch.

Sad thing is that the secret to building a prosperous and successful society (modern nations) is not hidden in a text book. You don't even need to have a great education to know it. Living examples like China, Singapore, etc are all there for them to simply copy. Yet, they won't. Are we eternally doomed to failure and backwardness?

There was this hilarious story I heard about Zimbabwe.

A man went to the market with a wheel barrow filled with Zim dollars. As he was pricing the yam he wanted to buy, some miscreants just emptied the money on the ground and ran a way with the wheel barrow.

Obviously the wheel barrow was worth more than the huge bundles of Zimbabwe money !!!! grin grin grin grin
