SENEGAL: Senate Amidst the uproar surrounding the cost of running Nigeria’s bi-cameral legislature, the self acclaimed gaint of Africa can a borrow leaf from what is happening in its West Africa neighbour, Senegal. Senegalese lawmakers, who are divided between a 150-seat national assembly and a 100-seat senate, voted to do away with the senate, passing a law which dissolves the institution in order to save an estimated $15 million. Minister of Justice Aminata Toure explained that the suppression on Tuesday of the senate is intended to curb government spending, and will provide the cash needed to help the victims of the yearly rains which have left thousands homeless and killed at least 13 people. Unlike the national assembly, the senate is a relatively recent institution, and has become a symbol of government waste. It’s been frequently pilloried and described as an instrument of cronyism, a way to reward loyal party workers who did not get elected to the larger national assembly. Around half the senators are directly appointed by the president. Congress also voted to abolish the office of vice president, establish in 2009 by then-President Abdoulaye Wade, theBBC reports. It has not ever been occupied. http://blackboxnigeria.com/lesson-for-nigeria-as-senegal-vote-to-scrab-senate/ |

Senate should be scrapped? I don't see that happening in Nigeria for a lot of reasons. Senegal does not have 180 tribes like Nigeria. Senegal is not as diverse and rich like Nigeria. And in any democratic setting anyway, an arm of the government is not just thrown away to save cost. If President Buhari even remotely suggests something like this? The Tanoids, SaTanoids, GEJ apologists, Buhari voyeurs like Barcanista and their fellow travelers will go crazy calling him a dictator. Dedicating this page to the Blacks in South Carolina, that lost their lives on Wednesday from a racist white man. |

Cardiac arrest will be the new diagnosis of the investment bankers at NASS. You must be joking to even dream this in Nigeria let alone voicing it out, no NASS member in his/her warped mind will agree to let their investments in the last election go down the drain without maximizing some profit first because of some stewpidd austerity measures. |
