True story and how Wole Soyinka lost (white privilege) - The Telegraph (excerpts):

Simon Armitage has been appointed as Oxford’s new Professor of Poetry after a controversial contest in which Melvyn Bragg attempted to scupper the chances of a rival candidate.

Armitage, the popular poet and broadcaster, secured 1,221 votes – 301 more than his closest rival, Wole Soyinka.

Soyinka, the first African writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature and a respected playwright and political activist, was an early favourite for the post after garnering by far the highest number of nominations.

But Lord Bragg threw a spanner in the works last month when he publicly withdrew his support for Soyinka and switched allegiance to Armitage, claiming Soyinka was too old and insufficiently committed to the job.

Some of Soyinka's supporters were furious about the decision. Andrew Franklin, the publisher and founder of Profile Books who has published Soyinka's work, called the decision "collective madness" and said: "Why couldn't Oxford have voted for its first ever black professor of poetry? Simon Armitage is good but this is a collective failure of imagination. It just would have been nice to see Oxford do something different.

Of Lord Bragg's intervention in the race, and in particular his mention of Soyinka's age, Franklin said: "I think Melvyn Bragg was just making trouble. He's hardly a spring chicken himself but he still makes a contribution and is one of the most thoughtful broadcasters on radio. People don't tell him he's too old.

"And what does age have to do with it? It's not as if Wole would have had his finger on the nuclear button."

Soyinka is very rarely biased, very rarely. He's speaks the truth selflessly, most time if not all the time.

Is a credit for him to be the closest rival.

Maxymilliano:
Soyinka is more of a biase social commentator than a poet, thus the news doesn't come as a surprise ...

I think he should start criticizing Aregbese, Tinubu and AMU-echi sha.. He so much loves those guys that makes me feel like he's an APC man.

Wole is a great man, but that doesn't take the fact that he's biased towards APC away. Well, am still observing him tho..

Mike Tyson, a Brownsville nyggah, who even at the peak of his career, was still running around with killers and stick up kids like hommo (the guy who shot 50 cent 9 times) and Nuts (the guy who rap.ed Egypt, a former radio presenter and the leader of Get Money crew) - whose rise to fame was about killing other black people and polluting black neighbourhoods with crack cocaine - is ya hero. A Mike Tyson, who has never done anything for anyone, apart from running with thugs and making white folks rich as a perpetual coon.

Yes, Kanye West is a darn genius - go heck his body of work. Tupac Shakur is the most influential musician ever and he was the Malcolm X of hip-hop. And Floyd Mayweather is a marketing and business genius - who else has been able to make the same money he made in boxing?

How about tell me who isn't a puppet cos everyone is a puppet to you. I need names.

Mike Tyson remains my hero for overcoming a lot of obstacles in his life which were not of his making, applying himself to his craft and becoming one of the most invincible fighters in boxing history.

I have since lost every single respect I had for this man.

He is obviously a cheap skate hustler looking for where to score and who to scam.

He is also an attention seeking wh0re who is so used to listening to his own garbage.

Soyinka is the most inconsistent and hypocritical being who obviously needs to crawl into a crag and die slowly.

My God you are a nasty piece of work.

Oh please, who hasn't been through a lot of obstacles in life? I'm not even judging him cos it comes with the territory and certain things will always be with you for a lifetime, when you're from a certain place - product of ya environment. However, when you start making him look like a saint, while trying to portray the next man from similar background in bad light - that's what I've got a problem with.

Lmao @ Mike Tyson's invincibility. He wasn't invincible when the bum, Buster Douglas, knocked his arse out cold, and put him to sleep. He wasn't invincible when he turned into a cannibal and bit off Holyfield's ear. And he sure wasn't invincible when Lennox Lewis put him to sleep. I'm a fan of some of Tyson's exploit in the ring - but the guy is/was an obnoxious coon.

How about tell me who isn't a puppet cos you call everyone a puppet? I need names.

Of what benefit is this post to the average Nigerian?
How many Nigerians actually understand Soyinka's literary style?
I find his writing to be very pretentious and inaccessible to about 90% of Nigerians so what is really the point of it?
Also Soyinka never criticises the western world which for me indicates that he is an imperialist puppet.

You must be a naive teenager to claim he is a western puppet.
Have you ever read any of his books and you can't find the ridicule he subjected the west to ?
Go and read a copy of his Nobel prize( the prize given to him by the west) acceptance speech and get a feeling of one of the true heroes of Africa.

Can you please name just one of his works in which he criticises western powers, i am aware of the fact that he has had major conflict with successive Nigerian regimes but he always manages to stop short of criticising their puppet masters - the western powers.

The truth of the matter is that Soyinka will never bite the hand that feeds him, his main source of income comes from his various university appointments abroad, that's why he was even allowed to be in the running for this s.tupid oxford post which confers nothing of value on the average Nigerian.

Have you read his works about South Africa? His poems about Malcolm X and other civil rights movement leaders?

Heck, the fact that he practises African religion is enough to show who he's - there's nothing more African and anti-colonial(western) than that. Brev, you need to start viewing things more critically. Everything about you is just moaning, without analysing issues properly.

And the Oxford post is highly significant cos no black person has ever held it.
