jnrbanks : Amen oo, na God's blessing I need now. School accommodation are known to be on the expensive side. I would advise that you look for shared flats closer to school. £83pw is kinda expensive, however good if it's en suite. As per the payment, e be like say na that Form A make sense pass.

private shared flats it is den...saw a few cheaper ones on spareroom website..nd its all inclusive ..

and yea i was at my bank (first bank) dis mawnin, d form A is better as d bank dudes also assured me its at CBN rate...funny enuff wen i asked dem d rate, dey were lyk £1 at 317naira and cbn dis morning was selling at 309naira so i no knw whether der own cbn different from d one i knw grin ...but here's der charge:
0.5% of d naira equivalent
5% vat on d commission
3000naira swift charges (I feel dis is too high sha)

I was also adviced in access bnk o Jst use mastercard ( oloshi pipu)

eco bank was proposing a dorm Acc... 2500naira swift charge, 0.5% commission, 5%vat and £50 flat charge (what ever dat is)...dey said it will cover both der charge and dat of der correspondence.
but I did not check for der form A charges ohh.(am expecting a call from dem pertaining dat so will let u guys knw)

am thinking of Jst boycotting des banks and Jst go to CBN direct as d bank no even far from my haus ...Buh I don't knw if its possible to perform such with dem.

owkay Dats all I got...if anyone knw any beta bank option, abeg holla.

jnrbanks : Hahaha, maybe dem own CBN different from the one we all know. Hopefully you get some inputs from people who made payment recently as I'm kinda outdated, I did mine way back in 2012. You might want to ask folks on the other UK student visa thread. All the best broda!

I used the 1st bank form a in 2013. Their "CBN" rate was about +10 Naira extra on every GBP. What they do is, after your "form A" has been submitted and you have required fund in your account, you attach a letter of authorization allowing them to deduct from your Naira. They then buy FX from CBN (usually every Wednesday and Fridays then) which they in turn sell to you at a price of in the conventional BDC. In addition, you don't even see your cash, as the money iswired directly to your school. I love Nigeria banks, they trade with your money and charge you twice for it.

Your point is quite valid. Exactly what I highlighted before. Getting jobs in Canada is not easy too. And from info I got, most people migrating there already have Msc, work experiences and so they have a slightly more decent chance on nicking a very good job
PweedyB:
LOL, so I saw too different topics today on this forum trying to talk down the idea of schooling in UK. I hope no one here is discouraged. The onli advantage I see with canda, aussie and yankee is that you have more months to do "menial" jobs especially if your grades are below par. Jobs would not come automatically If you have low grades in those countires. If you make a top grade in UK you've achieved a lot as u have better chances of getting a job in the UK or Nigeria.

Still very surprised the topic of Jobs & migration in UK is still trending here.I have stopped worrying about that. Lol My sis finished from Columbia Uni (3.5 GPA), NYC for Bsc tho and still hasn't got a job. tho she did an internship with AIG but couldn't secure full time employment because of the fact her driver's license wasn't up to 1 year. Well no doubt her Columbia degree enabled her to get some very good schools for Msc..... For me personally, I still believe in getting the best of grades in UK and then looking for jobs outside UK. I finished my NYSC last year and worked with some couple in PHC that took me randomly. husby & wifey schooled in UK, husby got a very good msc result, applied to Shell, was picked and been working. he collects 10m a month. head of civil engineering dept. cheesy cheesy I dont know any job in UK,US or wherever that you will be collecting that per month. So it still bores down to academics (sexy grades), Favour, zeal (cuz it can be very tiring applying for jobs etc) and being smart(knowing what to do,where to apply at the right time).

The funny thing about these Uk govt debates is that the optimistic ones seem to be just starting out and those with the ''Uk not so good'' views seem to be old on this thread. Connecting the dots i still dont know what to believe, i'm mid-way lol grin

I have a PhD partial scholarship (tuition fee only) to study Mechanical Engineering with the University of Nottingham, UK. I suppose to arrive UK by September. My major challenge is accommodation and how to survive in Nottingham. I am looking for people to share apartment with.

You'll definitely find people to share an 'apartment' with but it still boils down to the amount you have.
Your partial scholarship, how many percent is it? Can you complete the rest of the school fees and meet up with the maintenance requirement

Hi. I am also going to be studying at the University of Nottingham this september for a PhD in Microbiology. I have seen a few 2 room apartments so we could share together if interested. Lets get in touch. Btw, I did my MSc there in 2013 so I have fair knowledge on how life is there smiley

Dude just Google it most of the schools you guys are mentioning here are not even ranked among the top 500 globally and you guys pay so much. why not consider other countries. Asia has a lot of highly ranked schools and it seems no one goes there same with other European countries. am sure 90 percent of the people in these schools mentioned are nigerians and other foolish africans.
Re: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by Nobody: 12:15pm On Jun 26, 2015
PweedyB:
90 percent indeed.
sorry it might be exaggerated but one thing I have noticed about we nigerians is that in a crave to school abroad we don't do proper research I school in ghana and there are so many illegal one block universities there and most of them in this schools are nigerians this guy's pay as much as 500k a session to school in a school not even recognised by the ghanian government. I have followed this thread from the first page and have Googled most of the schools mentioned here and none is highly ranked globally and look at the outrageous fees plus no post work visa. you finish and you come to look for a job like a mad man in Nigeria. there are well highly ranked cheap schools in other countries why can't people research on them. The importance of ranking cannot be overemphasised.

you might be referring to germany nd some other asian countries apart from engineering courses their certificates might not be appealing to students and employers rankings are key yes but because some have decided to school in UK doesn't mean they are wasting money cus its 'expensive' the lecturers in thos cheap schools in other countries might have studied in the UK as well, no one can argue of UK's quality of education and North America as well. Getting jobs is subjective sm1 might have schools in a cheap school and still won't be able to secure a job. That the schools are not ranked high globally doesn't mean they are crap the rankings are Mostly distorted. Your Ghanaian school might not rank high globally too but am sure you would agree that the way you study and what you gain from your study is what matters. You need to check the USA thread to see the schools people are applying to they are way lower than the ones you've been googling here.

well I think UK education quality is overrated. My naval arch lecturer did his masters at university of Southampton one of the best schools in UK and ranked 112 globally. He said he was surprised when he got there they just chew and pour taking questions of 10 years earlier solving them and writing exams. I have also met tons of other UK graduates though. well am in the engineering field and I will advise anyone who wants to do his masters in engineering to always look before he leaps.
