No1: Dog eat their poop for various reasons and I have experienced this at first hand basis in my dam when she whelped. This habit is commonly seen in female dogs who have puppies, it is done because she wants to keep the environment clean so she licks the puppies poop and wee as a way of doing that. At a particular point, even before 5wks,this habit stopped in mine but it can continue for other dogs.
No 2: some dogs experience malnutrition and in so doing they eat up not totally digested food in a way to make up for that.
No 3: In some dogs it's just a gross habit that probably started as a pup and grew up with it.
Ways to solve this include walking your dog to where it does its biznis and making sure you clean up right after, buying a whistle and having it with you whenever your dog wants to do its biznis and immediately it opens its mouth sound d whistle so loud it stops, pouring bitter substances on d poop so by d time it tastes the dog basically walks away. First things first is hygiene, don't leave poop unattended to.

Q-Why do some dogs kill their pups if not taken away from them immediately?
Also this condition can be caused by a number of reasons ranging from cannibalism, lack of recognition of the pup due to several hormonal imbalances, mastitis(inflammation of the teats), stress or fear, still born or unhealthy pups. Would elaborate on the last part(still born or unhealthy pups cos I av witnessed this before). This habit isn't restricted to just dogs alone, rabbits, snakes, chickens amongst a few display this habit too and this is cos of the dam noticing that d pup is unhealthy and would just pup extra strain on her so she would rather eat it up to gain nutrients than leave it unattended to. Same scenario happens to still born too, d dam feels sorry for d loss of her pup but instead of waste dt amount of nutrients she ingests the pup to make up for the ones she has lost and at the same time feed d ones that made it.

Q-why do people tie a cloth arnd the waist of d dam.....
A- I haven't seen this yet sha but I want to believe it's to prevent the dam from stretching too much in d stage of pregnancy. I have however witnessed using a belt or rope like object to tie d hind leg nd fore leg just enough to prevent her from stretching too.

My dogs don't exhibit any of this characters...i guess this arise as a result of malnutrition and lack of proper training...if your dog eats poop then u don't feed it enof....

Secondly,nursing bitches don't intentionally hurt or kill their pup.,stepping on them or suffocating the pups can result to the pup's death,this actions are done mistakenly of course,so i don't believe nursing female dogs intend to inflict harm on their pups or eat them at worse

thirdly,why people tie d waist of their pregnant bitches is just to avoid or prevent the dog from stretching which might lead to miscarriage i.e losing the pregnancy

This is the little i know..experts can add their view and facts.

Interesting post here, but the heading could have been better put. Let me explain.

Technically, there are no 'legitimate' canine breeders in Nigeria, this is because there is no law regulating the industry yet, neither is there a robust database of purebred dogs. The Rottweiler, Boerboel and German Shepherd Dog associations/clubs in Nigeria derive their 'legitimacy' from foreign bodies.

What we do have in abundance are LOTS of Puppy Millers, Backyard breeders and a very few hobby breeders.

I go out of my way to explain to folks that I am not a breeder (though at no point in time do I own less than 8 purebred dogs at a time, and they have bred unauthorized before), I am an animal behaviorist & pet broker who happens to be a dog lover. The refusal of majority of dog owners to make this distinction is what has brought us to where we are.

So, are you a breeder, hobbyist, puppy miller or a puppy broker?

hmmm that i can say malnutrition. she didn't get the adequate care as at when do. forget about her not feeding the pups now and focus on the survival of the newbies who are still yet of this world.

.....yea...so vet should give s dose of oxytocin...but while waiting for the stirring up of d hormones....hand feed the puppies with SMA_GOLD..D one for babies.. don't just use any kind of milk...
