What Does Etiosa Mean In Yoruba. by Trinity213: 5:49pm On Jun 26, 2015
Please can someone help me with the meaning of Etiosa in yoruba language. in edo language it means strength of God. ETI- strength, OSA-God. Some people even bear it as their name in Benin but I was surprise to see Eti-Osa LGA in Lagos state, so i believe it could have another meaning in yoruba or maybe another link between the Edos and the Yorubas.

I think it's a bini name. cos historically, the yorubas originated from Edo..
Few weeks ago, our training(Edo) manager was sharing with us, a brief history of Edo/yoruba origin. He said Akpogbon I.e the bus-stop before CMS is a Bini name.

Yea, that's the correct spelling, but still didn't change the fact that it was coined from bini because of their historical relation.

Also, the igbos, they say, originated from Edo.The will fight and argue with you if u tell them..lol That's why have names like Osadebe etc

That was my initial thought but while Osadebe (igbo) and Osadebamwen (edo) have the same meaning (God is with me). Etiosa(yoruba) and Etinosa (edo) are not even closely related in meaning so i beg to disagree with you.

What's missing there, 'N'? It's probably a spelling mix up...Is there any osa in yoruba language? If Etiosa is Yoruba, what does it mean?

Eti Osa meeand the bank of a Lagoon..

OKUN means Sea in Yoruba
While OSA means lagoon
ETI means the edge or bank or something.

ETI-OSA is two words, which mean LAGOON BANK (which describes the location of the Local government in question). ... not even close to the Bini meaning.

Okay. Going by your analogy:
Victoria Island, Maryland have English name so the Yoruba came from where?
Wannabe historians that know nothing about the evolution of languages.
Yoruba languages have a unique characteristic: aya lo ede!

But not that Lagos originated from the British.

Just that you are indirectly trying to portray that the Yoruba originated from Edo using names as the basis for that. And yes, the Edo has ruled Lagos before. That's a different thing.

The oosa people are mistaking for (eti) osa lagoon, is a shortened form of orisa, yoruba word for deities.

In yoruba, there is osa which means lagoon

There is also oosa which means deity.

Who said so? You?

You obviously have limited knowledge of Yoruba history, believing what ever catches your fancy.

Btw, what/where is Lagos?

His obsession with Yoruba history is born out of the guy's need for folk hero. to undermine Yoruba legend can be understood, they have no lithurgical historical tradition, they must twist around Yoruba legends for reckoning.

Wats all this? Is it not the Lagos I know and grew up in?
Edo descendants are present among the Awori (these lineages have become Awori themselves) doesn't mean Edo ruled lagos

I thought the LGA is ETIN-OSA not ETI OSA. Oh well, who cares the Yorubas are great in their own ways and so are Edos and other groups in Niggerr Area(Nigeria).

I don't mean that the Edo has ever subjugated Lagos but rather that a descendant has ruled there.

Just like Obama. That he had Kenyan ancestry doesn't mean Kenya have ruled America. Nor that Americans originated from Kenya which is the basis of the discuss with the person I quoted.
