The police have arraigned an 18-year-old motorcyclist, Maro Ashake, for allegedly abducting and raping a 15-year-old girl.

He was arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, Yaba, Lagos, on two counts of abduction and rape.

The incident was said to have occurred at Oko Afo, Badagry, Lagos, penultimate Wednesday.

It was learnt that the victim, Temitope (pseudonym) had just finished her secondary school education and was attending computer training classes before the incident.

On the fateful day, Temitope’s mother was said to have taken her younger sibling to school, while her father was away at work.

Temitope was said to have left her parents’ house under the guise of going for her computer class.

However, Temitope’s mother, who on her arrival did not find her daughter at home, decided to check her at the computer school.

It was learnt that Temitope was nowhere to be found when her mother got to where she claimed she was going.

It was learnt that the victim’s father alerted the police when he could not find his daughter.

It was further learnt that Temitope did not return home until eight days after she left the house.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Temitope and Ashake were in a relationship.

She said on the day Temitope was discovered missing, she had gone to her boyfriend’s house.

She added that Temitope hid in Ashake’s friend’s house during the period of her disappearance.

Ashake was said to have had carnal knowledge of Temitope during that period.

Ashake was subsequently arrested by the police and arraigned in the court.

The charges read in part, “That you, Maro Ashake, aged 18, on June 17, at about 9am, at Oko Afo, Badagry, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did abduct one Temitope and detained her for the purpose of having carnal knowledge of her, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 267 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The defence counsel, Mr. E. E. Bassey, applied for the bail of the defendant in liberal terms.

The magistrate, Mrs. A. O. Soladoye, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

Soladoye adjourned the matter till August 10, 2015
