congrats to all that have attempted the puzzle you all tried. out of almost 200 that attempted just over 20 persons (i.e 10% ) got it right.

let unravel the puzzle together

let first of all consider the two smaller embedded square. each has 5 square i.e a total of 10

now discard the two smaller square and consider the lager square.
the larger square contain 16 small squares plus one large square ie a total of 17

adding this to the previous result we have 10+17= 27

now we take the 2 unit and 3 unit squares. we have 9 2unit squares and 4 3unit squares. this give 9+4=13 squares

adding this to the previous result gives: 27+13=40 squares

hence the total number of squares in the figure is 40

actually, the intersection of the vertical and horizontal lines make up the 2unite square (OR MORE TECHNICALLY 4 UNITES SQUARE). this squares are unique and totalled to give us 9. the 3 unite square (OR MORE TECHNICALLY THE 9 UNITES SQUARE) are 4 in number. just open your eyes very well
