Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called on the people of Rivers State to remain calm despite policemen sealing up of all council secretariats in the  that on the orders of the Inspector General of Police.

Inaugurating the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission  ( RSIEC ) and the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission on Friday,  Governor  Wike  regretted that the Police would  take such an action  despite the  nullification of  local government elections  by the  Federal  High Court.

He said  the  state government  will  always  respect  the rule of law, urging the  people  of  the  state to  be  patient despite  the provocation.

He said : “We woke up  this morning  to witness the change they talked about. The  police took over all the  council  secretariats preventing  the  caretaker  committees from  gaining access”

Speaking further,  Governor  Wike  charged the RSIEC  to conduct credible  local government  elections  in line with  extant laws.

He urged  the  commission to preparations for the  elections as the  caretaker committees will stay  for six months.

The  governor also charged  the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission to take steps to  correct  the  anomalies in the  state judiciary.

Responding, Chairman State Judicial  Service Commission and State Acting Chief Judge, Justice Daisy Okocha assured the governor that members  would  address the challenges  facing the state judiciary.

Chairman of the RSIEC, Justice CI Uriri said that the commission would conduct elections  in  line  with constitutional provisions.

Also on Friday,  the governor  inaugurated  the  Rivers State Civil Service Commission,  the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission and the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission.

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demands immediate unsealing of local councils in Rivers State by the Police.

The party described as unconstitutional, reprehensible abuse of power and brazen show of partisanship, the action of the APC-led federal government controlled police in barring caretaker committees lawfully appointed by the state government from taking charge of the councils.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in a statement on Friday said the action of the police is an affront to the ruling of the High Court, which Thursday dissolved the 22 local government councils unlawfully imposed by the immediate past administration in the state, upon which the caretaker committees were appointed by Governor Nyesom Wike.

The party said “it was curious that the police allowed the dissolution of local government councils and appointment of caretaker committees in APC controlled Plateau and Kaduna states, even when they were without the orders of the court but elected to clamp down on that of Rivers State, which came as a result of judicial pronouncement.”

It therefore charged the Inspector General of Police to come out clean on the matter and assure the nation of the non-partisanship of the police by ordering the immediate unsealing of the councils.

The party said Nigerians and the international community should note the development, which “is a yet another clear indication that the Nigerian police may have become a partisan and compromised instrument in the hands of the APC federal government to destabilize PDP controlled states, particularly Rivers State.

Chief Olisa Metuh

APC is falling by d day. Wike is smarter here cos it was d courts (a Federal one for that matter) that dissolved d l.g chairmen. Dat he even gave a 6mnth period during which a proper l.g election must be done makes him a better democrat than a lot of governors in d country (even APC controlled states esp Rocha's) who will use caretaker chairmen 'ad infinitum'. Amaechi tot Wike wud v used his executive powers in connivance with d state assembly to sack them but Wike waited for d courts. Its only a matter of time d Police will come out to deny this n claim they were there to forestall breakdown of law n order. Honestly I am one of those DAT this Wike's leadership charisma is coming to as a surprise cos they made him appear as a tout n highly occultic down here. But really, this guy will have a lot to celebrate within first 100days n might be d NXT Akpabio in terms of devptal strides. Another reason for me to think this Wike dude was truly d brain behind Amaechi first term success as CoS cos Amaechi really did well during his first 4years. FTC though . Updated 5:30 pm 11/7/15: Really surprised this my small comment which is my FTC to make FP has had 300+ likes within 24hrs . I promise to remain objective always n to come bak here and castigate Wike if he falls our hand.

How. Amaechi unilaterally sacked l.g chairmen with connivance with d assembly. Even though Wike wud v done same, he rather waited for d courts to decide.

There is no issue of the past govt disobeying a court order. This is a strange and dangerous impunity that is capable of destroying this nation.

Wike is a Scam.

Well they can operate from rented apartment or hotel rooms for the time being.
After all all the LGA chairmen resides in PH city and rules from their city homez.

Wike's time is short.
Court told RSIEC not to conduct election 5days to end of Amachi's tenure
My questions are
Was there an election,
Did rivers people voted
Were rivers people voted for
Is there anywhere it is unconstitutional to carry out legal duties few days to end of ongoing govt.
Who is actually bias?

The local government chairmen sought to be joined in the suit as legally obtainable, justice akanbi refused. The National industrial court ordered that nobody should tamper with the tenure of the lga chairmen, justice akanbi refused. It's now they are talking about obeying court order. Fools.

When the Obio Akpor council was sealed during the GEJ administration by the police for many months inspite of the court ruling and Order what happened? who masterminded it?
Wike should use his tongue and count his teeth and also forget the LGA Allocations.
Any lawyer in the house will know that the judgement was bought.
A case of election register cant be used to nullify an election even when the supreme court have ruled that state governors cant sack LGA Chairman.
I urge the sacked chairmen to approach the Appeal court and seek for a redress.
Insha Allah.

As per being joined in d suit DAT was d prerogative of d court to agree in joining them or not. As per d Natnl Ind court DAT nobody should tamper with them it was obeyed n part of d reason Wike never dissolved them on his own. The Industrial court never said a Fed High court of competent jurisdiction should not be obeyed. The APC camp has indicated dia willingness to appeal d verdict n its within dia right. D whole episode started with Amaechi conducting an l.g election five days to handover even when d court advised against that by telling Inec not to release d voters list to Rivsiec. I wonder who will bankroll money to pursue this appeal if eventually done. Good enough updates have even shown its few l.g of Emohua, Ikwerre, Obio Akpor n Phc city DAT d police barricaded and likely by 'morrow they all disappear

Not a good analogy here. In d Amaechi case, he sacked d Obio Akpor l.g chairman Mr Nsirim who was elected and installed one Chikaodi Dike and d police had to barricade d council cos Amaechi action was unconstitutional, impunitive, and without recourse to d courts. As per other PEJ n police excesses against Amaechi may be for anoda comparison

pls d brain is for reasoning. Did Wike sack d l.g.a chairmen?--- d court did. In Amaechi own he sacked an elected chairman Mr Nsirim to install a caretaker Mr Chikaodi Dike n Gej had to use d Police to barricade d council hence a clear opposite of d case in hand

my brother, adherence to court orders should never and can never be one sided! The apc and chairmen went to the appeal court and challenged the jurisdiction of akanbi's court to hear the matter. Akanbi was duly served and the appeal judgement was set for October 12th. Akanbi had no right to do anything before October 12th. Also the suit to join the chairmen in the suit was challenged and still pending in court. That was to be heard before any ruling. It's not the prerogative of akanbi to join or not join them in the suit. That matter was in another court. That judgement yesterday was what people wanted to hear especially those who are still angry at amaechi but that judgement was illegal and a sham.

This is the same thing APC accused the jonathan government of using the police for, now look at this, shows they were not shouting because of misuse of power but because that power was not theirs to misuse.
