Faux Pas: Mode9 & ' Nigerian Girls' Was It Miscalculated? by rapjunkie(m): 12:26pm On Mar 10, 2009
I'm beginning to think that ' Nigerian Girls' was a serious faux pas by Mode. It is a funny song and we all know he was joking around but did the joke backfire? It was supposed to be a Nigerian take on the Jay Z 'girls, girls, girls' song.

I played the song for my wife, yes, Rapjunkie is married shocked and she liked the song ( It was funny) but she was offended by the overall message. She said she understood what Mode was trying to do but it said nothing positive about any [/b]Nigerian girls and was just steeped in stereotype. She also reminded me that Jay Z's version was much different because  he didn't just point out negative stereotypes in the song.  I had previously read similar comments made by girls on the M.I/Mode9 thread.

Now this got me thinking. . . . . . . . .

If the girls don't like you then there is no way (generally) you are going to be commercially successful. Simple as!! Most girls seem to point out this particular song of Mode more than any other and they don't care about his lyricism or anything else.

We all know that the so called 'heads' only download free music so I reckon Mode has to find a way to apologise and then appeal to the ladies or his career will be over soon.

Or is it just me creating new theories in my head (according to lalaboi grin)

What do you think?

I know it was meant to be funny. I listened to it a million times but it seems that it is only guys who got the joke.

On the MI or Mode thread ( don't ask which, so many these days) the girls seemed to dislike Mode because of that song. If you want to sell commercial units ( not saying Mode does) you need to appeal to the ladies. Lets face it, we all know songs we are forced to listen to and end up liking ( reluctantly) because our ladies  like them.

khanye:

Can you explain that

If there is a massive disapproval of an artist by ladies because of a song he made then I don't think I need to explain what the problems will be.

What I meant by apologising is ( for e.g) releasing a ' Nigerian Girls Part 2' where he addresses the matter (in a funny way) asks for forgiveness and points out the positive things about Nigerian girls which they will be happy to identify with and 'rock' at clubs. We all know Mode9 has wit and i believe he's got the skill to pull it off.

Comprehende?

Yes! I agree.

That song was the final nail on mode 9's coffin

The video, although ''colourful'' did a good job at sinking in the mesaage.
THAT SONG IS A DISS SONG TO NAIJA GIRLS

I take special offense in the shit he said about girls from my tribe   angry angry angry angry

Personally, I think the ladies should forgive Mode 9 becoz he's going through an identity crisis. I figure it happens to some artistes - that period when they sound like some other great artiste before them, prior to their finding their unique voice.

At first, there was that hint of Scarface in his voice and lyricism, but nowadays, he's more into Jay Z's flavor, though the voice is agreeably different. Paradigm Shift confirmed this suspicion of mine which the song Nigerian Girls triggered off. Absolutely, he hurt Nigerian ladies in that song. Ruggedman is not like that.

You didnt answer the topic question.

Do you think it backfired! If it did, there is no point trying to pretend it didn't happen and everybody should just move on. As you can see Funky baby is still upset.

My main concern is that Mode aint  getting the props he should be getting and i'm trying to work out why.

You have to identify a problem before you can find a solution. Not trying to brew anything but wanted to provoke people into a response.

@ Dejirayo

How can you compare Ludacris with Mode. Are they selling to the same market?

How can you compare D'banj and Mode? ( i wont even explain why)

Modenine haters? Is that all you see?

I do not see the track as a problem, and if it is, it aint big to harm his carreer
cos M9 major market aint bugged by it. Any lady who doesnt see the track in
the lighter mood in which it was aint worth the trouble convincing that it was
a harmless, light mood, track. Seeing it as a diss track to ladies is just kinda petulant.

I agree that acceptance from ladies has a great influence on an artiste's career . . . it's a global thing . . . Pac said he advised Biggie to "rap for the b*****s" when he commenced his career - that it's a sure-fire way to success . . .

Plus it's a 2-way thing - some artistes sing to praise ladies . . . and they make it that way . . . others just clown even whilst dissing 'em and being misogynystic, yet ladies love 'em (Eminem is case study here) . . . I think being controversial, witty and somewhat 'having the ladies in mind' is a trick that always works for any artiste . . . Check the roll call - Eedris' approach-to-the-ladies is crude, that of Shina Peters, etc - crude too . . . on the other hand, MI adopted the be-good-to-the ladies style by doing 'Forever', and the list goes on - can't exhaust that . . .

And hey, I'm sure you know that "Nigerian Girls" from Mode ain't the single reason for the vituperations he's been receiving . . . I know you're more intelligent than that . . . you're just tryna be funny . . .

I always enjoy these Mode 9 threads. People get so passionate. Mode 9 to me is a lyrical giant, but these days, you need a lot more than that to stay in the game. For me, i don't think the ladies cared about the song, cause they're not checking for Mode 9 anyway.

All i see on these forums is pure man, defending mode 9 like he's God and then asking for free download links to his shit.

If you guys are true fans (Khanye, i mean you), then help the guy out in the real world. Help organize a street team. Help drive up sales. Help find out why lyrics alone are not enough for him. When people are offering opinions on the forum, listen. Don't always take it as negative critiscm.

Bottom line is, Mode 9 needs a club banger or a radio smash. You can dress it up anyway you like, but all the best rappers need them and have them.  Naeto C may not be the best lyrically, but he's more of the complete package. Same goes for MI. You need a good mix in an album. Something for the heads, the ladies and the clubs. If Mobb Deep can do it. So can Mode. My 2 kobo

My point is that there is no other song like 'Nigerian girls'. If there is, point it out to me. You mentioned Eminem but i think your analogy is wrong. Do u think if Eminem was Nigerian and released several tracks dissing his mother he would have sold a lot of copies?

You should know that the american market and the nigerian market are quite different. To use your own words, ' I know you're more intelligent than that'

Also,  I never said that 'nigerian girls' was the single reason for the abuse Mode has been recieving. What I did notice was that girls don't seem to like him. . . . . . .  at all  . . . apart from Khanye

I don't think when Mode started this, he intended to alienate girls. If he has, then he needs to do something to fix it. Thats my point.

You're not getting ma point.

I'm not aware of any Nigerian song with exactly the same concept as Modey's 'Nigerian Girls', but there are worse songs.

Dude, I ain't a woman but I'm certain that there's nutin more derogatory, abusive, and insulting to women than seeing them as sex objects and singing about such . . . Shina Peters has loads of such songs, same for Fela, Sammy Needle, Blacky, D'banj, etc. Also, have you ever wondered why Nigerian stand-up comedians such as Basketmouth and Julius Agwu 'abuse' women in 'em jokes and still get ladies cracking The one called I-Go-Die is even the worst of 'em all - watch all his performances; he can't do without being vulgar. Yet ladies applaud him.

Sunny Nneji sang 'Tolotolo', throwin' subliminal disses at ladies who strut their stuff - ladies dig it . . . so what are we on

My overall point is that girls may not like him, but "Nigerian Girls" has got nutin to do with it . . . it might be dependent on a lot of factors . . . that song did not backfire in any way . . . if it's a club banger, ladies would most prolly be shakin' 'em waists to it in clubs . . .

As a fella, ask yourself why ladies love some guys and hate some . . . it's not sumn you can answer straight up . . . some guys just seem to have a bevy of ladies always surrounding 'em . . . even without trying . . . others are not so lucky with girls . . . atimes it might be due to factors like looks, dress sense, money or the lack of it, etc. And atimes you just can't place your fingers on it . . .

I agree on your point on the difference between the American and Nigerian markets . . . but to a certain degree.

Agreed, if Eminem was Nigerian and he released songs cussin' out his mom, he may not have sold so much . . . but note that there's emphasis on the word 'may' . . . why? cos atimes there are certain things in life you just can't predict . . . especially in a country like Nigeria with a vast population of diverse people and norms . . . have you ever wondered who most of Eminem's fans are His lady fans cut across all races and nations . . . I've checked it out . . . a horde of Nigerian girls love him like crazy . . . with all his misogynyst themes . . . you think these ladies don't understand what he was saying in "Cleaning Out My Closet", "Stan", "Kill You", etc  They do.

Ladies in Nigeria ain't different from ladies anywhere in the world . . . even with the cultural differences . . . if they already liked Mode before he did the song, they'll still love him after, or even more . . . consider if sumn like RMD did that same song . . . even D'banj . . . we won't be discussing this. If ladies already hated a dude and he went ahead to release a song to praise 'em, they'll even hate him the more . . . when a lady loves you, you can't stop her . . . when she hates you, you also can't stop her . . . if a lady loves a dude, she'll see him in rags and treat him like a prince . . . if she hates him, she'll see him on a horse and treat him like a beggar . . .

I don't see any need for Mode to do another song apologising to 'em ladies . . . that's a tardy suggestion.
