What did need mean by people hiding food under the bed when visitors come? Food is the cheapest thing you can get here. It does not cost much. I do take friends out to bars and restaurants and buy them drinks. If you come to my house, my bar is well stocked with all kinds of liqueurs that I do wish that people come around to drink with me often. I would advise you to switch to something like programming, learn a few well used programming languages that are in demand anywhere regardless of degree or not. You really don't need a Master's degree, especially in your line of study which means nothing without experience in countries abroad. The best jobs abroad are the ones that are hands on, work you do with your hands not stuff you say with your mouth.

Another career which most people overlook is the shipping industry, you can find a maritime academy and become a sailor, they are in demand all over the world and are given special travel privileges regardless of region.

I would advise you to consider a career switch after getting your mass comm degree.

The situation in Nigeria is the result of the aforementioned. most of us will not do the things we do abroad as stepping stone. Eg, no body will do security to earn feeding money then attend school to obtain higher degree. Nobody will clean old peoples ass to earn Nursing degree. Nobody will work in a Mc D. I'm glad OP made the distinction between obodo oyinbo and U.S. I'm not here to tell you that there's milk & honey flowing in the U.S or the streets are paved with gold, but I can confidently say you have better opportunities in the U.S than you do in Europe. Like anything in life, good information and the determination to make use of that information will make you very successful. Unfortunately, some Nigerians travel overseas and squander their opportunities. Or their so called relatives in the U.S never guide them because many of them made stupid mistakes by either studying the wrong courses in school or made poor choices ex fathering several babies and being tied to pay child support for many years to mention just a few.

Let me have this on record, if you happen to visit the U.S with a greencard, I can personally guide you towards earning an associate degree under 2-3yrs or bachelors within 4yrs all depends on how much credits you carry over. And if you are hardworking and live in the right state, willing to work overtime, you can easily start making a minimum of $200,000 a year. Look at my other posts, I don't sell ebook or give false hopes. Not every 'obodo oyinbo' is the same.

What kind of work can you guide someone fresh from Nigeria with a green card that will guarantee them an income of a minimum $200,000 a year? I am really curious, cause I doubt if 5% of the total US working population make that kind of six figure income.

How come everybody on NL living abroad is some high earning six figure professionals while in reality the vast majority of Nigerians living abroad are far from being six figure salary earners, they might be comfortable but most are far from being rich. Most Nigerians in the US either male or female are nurses or in one of the auxiliary medical fields.

Think the OP is on point. He is just laying out the reality that the majority...not all... the majority would face. Have your dreams... and hopes...but be prepared to face these realities or you can be trapped in a life of misery...caught in a vicious circle. The more good information one gets the better he can prepare to face and overcome the. challenges abroad...or in fact...decide whether it is even wise to travel. One thing so often overlooked is climate....because most people somehow believe the climate of their destination would be similar to their local climate. That would be a rude and expensive mistake.
