Irrespective or how you arrive the first couple of months are the hardest and that's when you are most vunerable. For me i was in country legally but had to wait 3 months to get my social security. Without that you'll be working under the table, meaning you will be employed by an employer who pays you cash only. What he pays is far less than minimum wage but there's nothing you can do about it because it is illegal. This is the period you need to limit your association with Nigerians. You have to remember, a lot of us are in country illegally, and all they know is how to hustle. They will try to suck you in but you have to resist.

As per the cultural change and racism, your best bet again is to stay away from Nigerians and Black Americans. Mix with people from Ghana, whites and the likes. You'll get acclamatized faster. It's hard either way and only time will get you through it. I have not witnessed any form of racism personally. You'll eventually find out that it's mostly lazy people who complain about racism. I'm not saying it does not exist, but it's few and far in between. Imagine a scenario where a man goes into a store, steals and runs away. He is chased by the police, told to stop, he resists and starts fighting with the cops. He gets shot and every black person screams RACISM. I ask you; does that make sense to you? My wife's clients are mostly white women. If America was that racist would she have those clients? America cares only about what quality service you can provide irrespective of what race you are. If you cannot be beneficial to society then you might as well pull out the race card.

I always advice people to join the army for at least 3 years immediately they arrive in the states. Your life will be so much better if you do. You will hit the ground running and achieve so much more. Nigerians told me not to, that i will be deployed to iraq and afghanistan and most likely die there. True, that could happen. I could also be crossing the street and be hit by a car the next minute as well. I have been deployed 3 times and nothing happened. Here's what you get as a soldier.

1. Citizenship within six months, while others wait 5 years.

2. 100k, free for educational purposes. This can only be used for college only.

3. In addition to that, while serving you get tuition assistance which means they pay for your schooling in active duty or reserve. Which also means you don't have to use the 100k. I'm transfering the 100k to my wife to finish her masters.

4. They also teach you a trade craft when you join the army. I am a software engineer for the army. I did not know squat about it prior to joining. I did a test which would tell if i was trainable and once that was done i got trained and the rest is history.

5. Once you master one craft, you can apply to switch to another one.

6. Free medical insurance. peace of mind

7. Quality life insurance. If i die for whatever reason; in combat or driving my car, my wife gets an instant 100k 24hrs later. A couple of months later she gets 450k and benefits for the rest of her life. The benefits ends when she re marries. I get 100k if anything happens to her.

8. Opportunity to travel. I cannot mention how many countries i have been to free of charge.

9. Opportunity to lead people. The training and opportunity to lead people is unquantifiable. I have over 50 people i teach, coach, mentor and lead. If America was that racist, i would not have the opportunity.

10. First in line for any federal job (you want this) when i decide to get out.

The only negative i have so far is the lack of access to Nigerian food. Considering all the positive though, i think i can live with that.

Wow... . This is very informative. The Op didn't really emphasise on the positives like you just did. But there's an age limit to joining the military, isn't it ?
I wished I had this info years ago . Kudo, men.

You have to understand that the OP is an average Nigerian; can't see beyond their nose. Yes there is an age limit. I think it's like 37 or so. Not sure though.

Taxi will not carry you for free in Obodo Oyibo?? And in which part of Nigeria do you see cab men doing that Charity work??
Nothing is free in Obodo Oyibo? Is anything free in Nigeria? Even the electricity that isn't free in Nigeria is a mess but in Obodo Oyibo what do you get? I guess you really dunno what 24/7 eletricity is though?

Loneliness? When you have your Job, school, trust me, your social life won't be in shambles!

Cost? I am sure you prefer paying your Light bills and yet you keep buying litres of petrol daily!! Talk about cost!!
Tax? If Nigeria wasn't ruled by greedy old mofos, trust me, you'd really be glad to catch a reality of what it is to live in a civilized world!!

There is no place like home when it comes to our food sha grin grin

I just love you.

Pursue your dream. Take the advantage of the free and high quality education in Finland. After your graduation, you can easily migrate to another country for a job or further studies, if you prefer so. Act now because there are on-going debates in the legislature about fee introduction for non-EU students; but I don't think this will come into effect anytime soon since the Finnish student unions are strongly fighting against it. Good luck.

In Nigeria you can get favours done when you don't have any money. You can ask the taxi guy to reduce his fare based on you don't have too much. In obodo oyibo, taxi guy will point to the metre. I hope you know even with sporadic power supply not everyone pays their light bills in Nigeria, PHCN cuts the power in the afternoon, you go and reconnect them later during the day. Lol.
I once took a taxi from my place to downtown and the metre read $55 but told him I could only pay $40 and he agreed. They are humans too remember!

After staying in asia 3years straight.
I'll advise you to better stay in your country than go to a place you'll be treated like shiit. e.g Malaysia.
Except you're planning on doing crime you can never become a millionaire overnight abroad.Better use the money you want to travel abroad with to start a business or do fixed deposit. The struggle abroad is real.

Pls don't misquote me, read the entirety of my comment. I never said someone who's "fresh" from Nigeria. Rather I said after earning an associate degree within 2-3yrs or bachelors within 4yrs or less, it all depends on your prior level of education and the course you studied in Nigeria. It is a 'catch-22' you can't sit comfortable at home watching The Kardashian Show and expect to make this kind of money, something has got to give. If you read my comment thoroughly, you will note that I said you must be hardworking and willing to work several overtime hours.
Everyone will pave their own path in life, however, if you are a determined Nigerian coming to the U.S with a green card and graduated secondary school or university in Nigeria already, I can direct you towards a career path that will make you a minimum of $200,000 a year if you achieve the following (1) You complete your associate degree in 2yrs. (2) Upon landing a job, you are determined to work several overtime hours. It's like many things in life, if you put in just a little more work or effort you can improve your current situation.
Moreover, many employers offer tuition reimbursements for employees trying to further their education in their field of work. While working with your associate, you may decide to go further to earn your bachelors/ masters or masters/doctorate all at the expense of your employer. You need not get stuck in student loan debt like many Nigerians I know. I know of folks who took huge sums of student loans to study accounting or media arts etc but can't find a decent paying job upon graduation. This may not be the case for all, but the point is, you should study a course that's in high demand, make money and then pursue your passion. If u r too passionate for your current field of study, pls stick to it.
And u r wrong in saying a vast majority of Nigerians are not 6 figure earners, according to the U.S Census Bureau, Nigerians have the highest number of doctors among all immigrant groups including Indians. Don't underestimate your people.
What exactly can someone study with a two year associate degree and start earning 200 grand a year, not saying you are lying but state it here and let us know or is it some kind of state secret?

U ask a question abt low life incomes and i gave u the information.....Problem,with Nigerians in Germany is the language because some people immediately after they can speak few German words, will started looking for jobs while those who have higher degree are working in big office including BMW and the rest automoblie office...In Germany, the more u are Educated the more ur chances of working in a better place and remember education is free in Germany grin grin

This education you are talking about begins after you must have spent up to 4 years studying the language, then add years in school, if you was 30 b4 you went there, BABA never reach?have you not mortgage you youthfulness?you will be starting when people are planning to retire

This may be true for some.. what I see Nigerians do when they first arrive is to limit themselves and limit their circle, listening to advise from fellow Nigerians who have been here so long with nothing to show for it.

If that qualified banker rolls with the right people who know what they are doing, he would secure a great job without much struggle.

A very close friend of mine became a senior drug safety scientist within 3yrs of arriving the UK.. dude has a 2.2 in microbiology from Onabisi Onabanjo Uni.. no masters, no previous work experience. It was a lady he met in the industry that put him through how to package his cv to get the job.

So you see it not that Nigerian qualifications is looked down upon here.
when you first arrive i n the Uk the group of people you hang out or live with matters a lot, if they wake up 4 am to do cleaning Jobs that's the line you will follow, if they are security officers that's the line you will follow, if they are office workers Hr staff accountants, that's the line you will also follow cos you know nothing better at that stage until you can brake away from that circle and discover yourself. In my honest opinion I think the OP is not giving a true representation of the life abroad.I was lucky to come to the UK in my early 20s when things where still easy,I have seen the good the bad and the ugly. Coming to the Uk was the best move in my life not that I only gained financially but got exposed now that's priceless. My reasoning was upgraded no matter where I find myself tomorrow I can survive.Life is choice driven. But for the women ,its a different ball game, family life is a battle, men can pack up go back to 9ja and get married,a bit difficult for our sisters

If you must try any, National University of Singapore or the Nanyang technological university. Japan - University of Tokyo or Kyoto University.

If Singapore, make sure you have lots of cash and have something upstairs. Japan would be cheaper vis a vis the exchange rate between the Yen and the Naira, but you must know the language. Which is very difficult.

Not really difficult it takes 2 to 3 weeks to learn katakana or hiragana and 3 months to start speaking at N1 level after that you can build up on vocabulary and grammar wanna do a masters in naval architecture am presently doing my bsc in marine engineering and wanna try university of tokyo or osaka university. Osaka offers full undergraduate down to phd program in english but it's ranked 54 in the world but University of tokyo is 23 but doesn't offer english courses

To quell your curiosity, i will try to enlighten you;

1. Yes i avoid Nigerians like the plaque. It is sad that most of them who come here don't change their mindset. Nigerians are like black Americans. Nigerians go about with the "village mentality" and the average black american believes their is a "conspiracy" against them while the truth is, they are lazy wannabe gangstas who live off the backs of tax payers.

2. What trouble are you talking about? you are more likely to get in trouble hanging around Nigerians. Remember, we have a psychological corruptive nature. I could tell you the phucked of things most of them do/try/tried to make me do. from being a gigolo to credit card fraud to insurance fraud. forgeting that the American justice system gives out jail terms like like candy to a baby. Their is no bribing your way outta that.

3. It is safer to hang around Ghanaians.

Brother, I don't dispute the fact that there are some bad Nigerians who are there to ruin your life or even like to take advantage of you but we still need to appreciate those good ones who are there to help you when you need their help we can't just brush everyone with thesame brush because I am talking from experience.

Then I would advise you try university of Tokyo since for you learning the language isn't difficult. Although, Osaka would have still been better, after all you'd still get to be Japan.

Why not try KASIT in Korea, after all South Korea builds more ship than Japan.?

eheh guy you have to drop the Nigerian way of thinking, duel more on waht you can do rather than the paper you earn, hence most successful people start with BSc then earn more qualification as the move along the ladder of field of work.I would be thinking of PHD when I own my own firm not to work for anybody

Seems you have everything for you - finance, brilliance, time etc. No wonder you are very selective when considering a school for your MSc.
Have you tried www.topuniversity.com? Could get informative analyses more there.

Hopefully my turn would be like yours and love seeing Nigerians go to the best schools in the planet.
