Interesting article...I like the part that says "Like some of my fellow economists, they would suggest that the Naira be allowed 'to find its level', just like the Zimbabwean Dollars found its, somewhere close to 275trillion to the US Dollar, before later finding the value somewhere in the waste paper basket." ![]() GUEST COLUMNIST: TOPE FASUAhttp://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/why-the-cbn-got-it-right/214193/ Cc: lalasticlala |

The decision by CBN is a smart one. By Curbing the demand for dollars through bane of rice and toothpicks import, they have saved the Naira from unnecessary pressure. This will help provide lifeline for our currency and stabilize its value considerable against the dollar. No wonder The Economist magazine people were furious. Emefiele is a good economist. |

Ofcourse, further devaluation of naira shld be a no go area after the recent over 20% devaluation. However, beyond all these superficial measures, our industrial base need to be strengthened(via improved power supply majorly), as well as boost our foreign exchange earnings. Beyond curbing the comparative excess demand for dollars to naira, why not increase the demand for naira in the international market by producing world-class finished products that command competitive value in the Int. Market? In the interim, I think CBN approach still make some sense! |

deeobserver209:How will it stabilize the value of the currency when there is a large margin between the official rate and the black market rate? This measure is only a short term measure as the pressure on the currency still exist, only shifting from the official market to the unofficial market. It needs to be supported by fiscal policy to have long term beneficial effect. That there is a price differential indicates that the demand exist. The crux of the matter is, how do you satisfy this demand within a reasonable period of time with minimal inflationary effect. |

CHANCEMAN:You made a point. However it is to the best interest to the Nigerian economy that short-term measures be adobted to stabilize the value of the naira for the time being until our industrial sector gets back on tract. |

deeobserver209:You think turning around our industrial sector will be a short term thing? We need to establish an environment conducive for manufacturing to thrive and that will take a while to achieve. We need foreign investments too to supplement local sources. Agreed the CBN strategy is directed at altering the Nigerian consumption pattern, but the issue is how long can the CBN sustain it. |

CHANCEMAN:Which is why government must work hand in hand with CBN to boost our export capability. Nigeria is blessed with a lot of resources like hand craft arts, agro products etc. These items will make great export products. |

deeobserver209:I share your thought. We need to have a conscious re-orientation that would lean towards non-oil exports and as against wholesale consumers of imports. We have the human resource to produce but capacity needs to be built. |
