For ages, many hold on to this debate, establishing their many understanding and reasoning why Grades are or are not a good indicator of a person's knowledge of a subject. Students who perform well at examinations mostly agree that Grades are while poor performing Students bet to differ. Looking deeper into these two categories of Students, one would recall that success in examinations might be as a result of answering well easy set examination questions, having a load of time scheduled to read and pass the examination, being able to memorize word-for-word what was taught and writing them to pass an examination, copying from others during examination, having access to the examination questions before the sitting, etc. What if there comes an odd to distract your studies, destabilize your memorization, causing your not sitting to write a paper, etc, thereby making you to score low grades; does it mean you have a poor knowledge of any of such failed subject(s)? Many have argued and looked into this subject from the live application of the teachings of such subjects or courses and as funny as it might seem from their debates, Students with poor grades stand out in the live application(s) of the knowledge of these subjects. This further deepens this debate and passing it on to more generations to come. Where do we now stand in this matter? Agree or disagree? Doing away with grades entirely would likely make our Students grow weak in their studies as there would be no better way to ascertain their performances or understanding of a subject. To our understanding, Grades do not necessarily translate directly to intelligence, but they do generally represent a student's effort and consistency. A student who consistently gets good grades, at the very least, applies themselves to their school work, while a student that consistently gets poor grades either clearly does not understand material or does not put forth an appropriate effort. So grades must have some correlation to intelligence. There may be exceptions to this rule, but an intelligent student will generally understand the importance of good grades. Knowledge and intelligence are not the same thing. Good grades does not imply a person knows a subject well but at least this person knows the material on the test/examination. The person may be intelligent but it has nothing to do with knowing the subject. Not all grading systems are equal. Check through our different educational systems and you would find out that there are variants on what score benchmarks Schools set as their Fail/Pass grades. Doesn't this also have its own downsides on Students? Many more points to elucidate here but we would like to know your views on this subject. Under expected and normal conditions of examination, good grades show knowlegde or mastery of a subject if and only if the good grades are consistent. But contrary to this opinion, i agree to the fact that good grades are nt indicator of a subject mastery. My reason being that i have good grades in some scary courses bt i dont really understand the subject. I read to pass those subjects only and the moment i get out of the examination Hall, i dont even remember the examination questions not to talk of what the subjects entail. |
