So you just got posted to Ijebu-Ode local government for your NYSC? Or you got transferred at work, and Ijb happened to be the next stop of call? Perhaps, you are coming to town for a party (most likely a wedding, or your grand pa/ma's burial) this weekend or the next. Whatever reason it is that is propelling your coming to my city for the very first time, you are welcome, and I'm sure you won't regret your visit. Having spent over 2 decades in the city, I hold a ph.D in its knowledge and all. Hence, allow my humble self to be your guide. Welcome to Ijebu-Ode. E we so ( just how you'd pronounce "err were so" in Oral English. Simply means, how are you?). Well, except you came to town on a chopper, chances are that you came in through Lagos - which is most-likely, Ibadan, Epe or Ijebu-Ife - least likely. Per adventure you arrived in a transit, the Okada riders are on standby to take you to your destination.

First tip: Never agree with the first fare you are charged. Slash the price into half, and bargain well. Applying this very skill every time you buy everything will save you some dollars my friend. Thanks!!!

LOCATION

Ijebu-Ode is a compact city, sandwiched between the largest city in West Africa, Ibadan, and the largest commercial city in West Africa, Lagos. It's 45 minutes away from the former, and a full football match time away from the latter. For the longitude and latitude degrees, contact your nearest metrological station.

WANT ITS HISTORY?

Ijebu was taken from Ajebu, Ode from Olode. The 2 folks happened to be the first settlers of the city. Obanta happened to be the first king. The Awujale, the title of the Royal father of Ijebu land comes from the name Agbeja ile ( one who settles land disputes). The Mayor of Ijebu-Ode happens to be the Olisa, whose palace sits on Olisa road. (I almost said, "he often gets ignored due to the presence of the all-dominating Awujale". But you never know who's reading a bitter truth at times). The story goes on and on...too bad your guide doesn't know much about the land's past... TO BE CONTINUED

LANGUAGE

Yoruba predominantly, just like any other South Western Nigerian city. But a majority understands the Lingua Franca basics. So you are safe, and communication wont be an issue if you can at least read this.

RELIGION

Christianity
Islam
And others

PEOPLE

Ijebu-Ode has a larger percentage of Yorubas (just like you would have known). Followed by the Ibos - who dominate the commercial activities of the Oyingbo market: where to get anything electronics (close to the New Market).

Second tip: Remember the first tip if you ever go to Oyingbo for shopping. However, slash the original price into four before further bargains.

The Hausas, and a host of other tribes also make up a part of the population. Welcome to Nigeria!

POPULAR SPOTS

So for whichever of the following you will be doing, Ijebu-Ode has just the right venue for you.

Events/Occasions

Sports

Library

Religious activity

Names wouldn't be mentioned here, but you can always ask people around for anything. Trust my Ijb folks to help you out with anything. Or just holla at myself (Facebook/twitter)

MY THOUGHTS ON MY CITY

You know! Just another cool place to live. Stress-free. No traffic. No riots. Fertile for business and farming. Accommodating people. Decent job opportunities. Great scenery. Got everything you'd get in every and any other city in Nigeria.

(An exclusive-pictures post will be coming on soon. Just trying to get me a decent camera.)

I love my city and all that is therein...

Welcome to Ijebu-Ode, the city to live in.

{Not intended to be part of the original post, but perhaps, you need a Master of Ceremony/ Compere for events when you come around... holla at your boy}
