i hope someone can answer this question. What department is operations in a bank? Nigerian trained bankers use that word alot. I worked in retail banking, then regulatory risk department in a bank not in Nigeria before returning back to engineering. |

I work in the bank as an operation staff. I feel drained everyday. There's no fulfilment in it for me. I look forward to Fridays and dread Mondays. But I've acquired a rude confidence from the job. I'm more exposed & I now feel I can surmount any obstacle. I keep praying & hoping God will answer me soon so that I will tender my resignation letter |

luvluvluv:Average nigeria don't want to die; and death is inevitable. In advance countries insurance is the secerity (bedrock) of their economy. Insurance sector have accummulated fund(premium) in which they can inject into economy for long Period of time. In a country like nig where level of insurance penetration is low; companies wil cont to suffer for high rate of interest. And the reason is simple... Those who save their moni in bank is for short period of time; but insurer can.keep premium for 10 yrs, 20yrs etc (life assurance)and they can easly give it out without affecting d. Benefit of their clients In conclusion; it is important to save certain portion of our monthly or yearly takehome for d benefit of ur dependant and to takecare of our old age. |

Wen i wz younger, i wanted to become a banker because of my mentor, my dad. He was a banker. I loved the way ppl respected him because of his profession. Ppl come to him for advice, even on non financial matters. Business of banking was awesome for ppl involved then. Withing 14 yrs, he had climbed up the ladder to become an AGM. I read banking and finance, graduated, completed my ACIB certification.(will be inducted nxt month) but withing my 1yr nd half that i started working, its totally different from wot i tot it was gonna be. Now its jst abt d rat race. Imagine a staff on a level for 7yrs, nt jst any level, entry level for dat matter. Can such a person talk about career? The kind of office politics that goes on within d bank sef, makes them saraki nd dogara to look lyk learmers. |

nnebebe:Sincerely, you spoke my mind but the best one can do is to add value to oneself by applying for a professional certificate which will serve as a leverage for us. |

Since u want to know about abroad.I can give an insight at least have worked there too. Here in Canada I can tell you there is targets too, especially with the top 5 major banks especially if one is in personal and commercial banking, that mostly branches and call centers, and have done both.call centers is the worst one,its daily targets and u have your mgr sending u email that what going on..u haven't gotten a mortgage ,loan or account etc.they could pay as much as 17 to 20 box an hour as basic pay, high performers could make more based on how they meet their targets. In the branch, its more relaxed u don't have people shouting on u and if u have a soji branch mgr,it makes your job easy.they use sales revenue as target and could be daily, weekly up to u.so lets say your weekly target is $3400 in sales revenue, u divide into 5 to achieve daily target. A bank account.. Will give u $200..if u open 3 accounts in a day that $600 box towards your weekly target,a credit card could get u $150 too if u get insurance on it,that another 100 box.loans mortages, car loans etc have their own revenues too.that my experience with 2 different Canadian banks...call center and branch.its tougher in call centers cos u can have mortages, loans lines of credit everything today and tomorrow nobody go remember..its a new target again.I have a friend that worked in another branch of a different bank... His like its tough, every week they are in a performance review.. Writing names of dose that met their weekly targets and those that did not on d board and challenging those that didn't, this occurs weekly.so different banks, different strategy cos have never experienced that before with d 2 banks I worked with. usbcable: |

usbcable:In addition to ottawaguy's advice. 99% of staff are not fully employed with benefits and all. I would use the UK as an example. I worked at one of the top 10 banks in the world. I started with retail banking where i witnessed hardcore sales (mortgage, credit card, deposit accounts, current accounts, loans e.t.c) and cross selling at the branch. We were also required to book in customers and potential customers for financial reviews appointments with the aim of selling them a product, follow up on sales lead from call centres, retention centres, cross sell and upsell financial products e.t.c and when we were recruited, if I remember clearly, more than half of my training class were contract employees. The difference between both, permanent and contract was that a permanent staff would have to go through three different warnings and managerial review before being fired but with contract staffs, they get fired without a second chance if they do not meet their target even though we all spent 4 months in training. It was tough for contract staff to become permanent staff. We permanent also get quarterly bonus as part of our benefits, yearly reviews with pay rise e.t.c while contract staff don't. Then I didn't even consider myself a banker, just a salesman in a bank, It was hard too. The competition between banks in the UK is very crazy. Customers would switch account because of 0.01% change in interest. It's a country where most of the populace are enlightened. A customer could get one into trouble for mis-selling. Although, we were never asked or told to mobilize deposit. I only started enjoying when i applied for a superior role in risk at a regional head office. That was where I can say my career started as a banker and i was more into product development and the regulatory risk associated with it before the product is launched into the market. Even at the regional head office, I would say about 30% of our staff were contract workers with big pay cheques. It was easy to differentiate between the two as permanent staffs had a different colored id card from contract staff. |

Nice this is reality. Imagine spending 5 years or more in a bank and you can't boast of having a million in account despite being employed as a graduate. And every one calls you banker? It's a funny world. They even label you stingy, that may be you are building a house in your home town. Without realising that there is no investment anywhere. Lol Zico5: |

A down to earth analysis. Truth being told. And the customers don't care that there is only one Customer service staff one teller 4 Atms one marketer in the bank . They complain about slowness and other issues and don't realise that the staff are over stressed, poorly renumerated, understaffed. And sometimes not promoted for as much as 10 years. And they expect magic just like the employers. God help us. MAYOWAAK: |

Denn:You nailed it. I just left Enterprise Bank. My uncle is a fellow of ICAN, for the past 7 years, no promotion for him, but our BM in Cannan land branch with just BSc in microbiology has been promoted 3 times within the same period ; just because she is close to oyedepo hence, she can bring in huge deposits. It is that bad. |

| Re: Bankers Whats The Way Forward?? by Nobody: 7:24am On Jul 27, 2015 |
luvluvluv:Banking isnt what it used to be if you compare the 80s and 90s vs the post millennium, theres no professionalism anymore. It has become casualized with so many people who have no business just pushed there cos there are no jobs. Theres no career growth prospect unless you have a good sponsor whose wealthy and can guarantee u huge cash cabal, its all about the money and connections. without that you just end up doing one role for the next 20yrs, I had a friend who works at one of the major banks in lagos in 2005 he was cards units they make atm cards and cheques , this is 2015 hes still in that role, hes got a masters and acca. his job description is still the same, when he shud be heading a department. He cant leave cos hes lot focus and doesnt know what else he will be doing if he left so he just stays and soaks up the abuse and humiliation. Your growth is predicated on the cash u bring, and not experience or competence. We just have well dressed cow boys and call girls in cold room environments, thats why they re so cold and brutal to customers. .A daughter or son of a prominent billionaire can rise over you overnight cos of the cash backing. Money rules in this sector. |
