African country, Kenya, has begun moves to build
one gigawatts.
While a megawatt is one million watts, a gigawatt
is one billion watts.
On Sunday, the Kenyan Ministry of Energy and
Petroleum signed a landmark contract with
SkyPower, the world’s largest developer and
owner of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV)
energy projects for one gigawatts of world-class
solar projects to be built in four phases in Kenya

I would have preferred a decentralized system tho. Smaller mini grids spread across the country and individual private participation that the solar pv allows should have been explored, creates more opportunities and encourages local participation than all this centralized systems. In my opinion this project is prone to failure...

I was just wondering what was going on here. .

The country with the highest megawatts of power in Africa is South Africa. I think around 50,000 megawatts or so. They actually have a single coal plant producing around 5000 megawatts of solid power. That is like a single plant producing almost all the power used in this country. This is why I think that Atiku Abubakars idea of big power stations is better than littering the country with endless gas turbines as was done by one brainless obasanjo. Imagine what could be done with the coal deposits at Enugu and co. . Even China and the US, produce lots of megawatts through coal while that lie fallow here. .

A GW is simply 1000MW.
