The Events of Thursday 23/Friday 24th July, 2015

This fateful day's journey started like every other day, myself and my two companions AJ and MM (Aliases) went to school and put in a good day's work. We headed back to our pad at exactly 8.30pm. On reaching the pad, just before driving into the premises, it was decided that we should make one last house-call before calling it a night. We headed back out and drove to Tanke, specifically, opposite S&grin ventures, the complex that houses the MTN office at Tanke, Ilorin. We were on our way home by 9.50pm or thereabouts and got home at 10.00pm.
On getting into the apartment, AJ learnt that a classmate, Havad (Alias) was leaving town the next day. Havad had expressed an interest in a keepsake and AJ had to take it down. Bearing in mind that it was already late at night, MM and I decided to accompany AJ on the 10minute walk to Havad's lodge and we set out at around 10.05pm.
On getting to the lodge, we opted to wait outside while AJ delivered his piece with Havad and it was at this point that fate struck.
At around 10.17pm (I know this now from the BBM Convo I was having), three gun-totting men walked up to Us where we stood, I assumed rightly that they were policemen and didn't see any reason to panic (Ilorin residents are liable to being picked up for wandering from Midnight and it was still some 90mins till midnight). We were frisked and found to be without any incriminating item(s); despite this, we were roughly dragged into a waiting commercial bus, this was at Oke-odo area of Tanke, Our phones were seized on boarding. (I later learnt that the men were officers attached to the F-Division Police Station along Pipeline road, Ilorin Kwara state). The bus stopped to pick other Citizens unfortunate to be out at this time. On getting to the Police station, We (Myself, MM, and others) were made to sit behind the Counter and later booked.
At precisely 11.30pm(Station time), after numerous appeals for our phones to enable us call for help were rebuffed on the grounds that the members of the Surveillance Task Force who took the phones off our persons were back on the street, we were marched into detention with the promise that we'll be allowed access to our phones the moment they returned. I saw the game for what it was: the Police were playing for time, by midnight, it would become impossible to release us due to the 'Wandering' provision and we'd have to spend the night in detention. I had resigned myself to the fact that it was going to be a very long night.
A while later, the station's generating set went off, blanketing the Cell in darkness. Not too long after this, I had a respiratory issue which would have passed with a cup of water and fresh air. MM later told me that my condition deteriorated very fast and soon afterwards the duty-cop took me out of the cell and sat me behind the Counter. I remember asking for water only to be told that the station didn't have any. A while later, in a desperate bid to cover their backsides (so I wouldn't die on their watch), MM and I were practically thrown out of the police station supposedly on the instruction of the DPO. MM requested for our phones to enable us call someone who could come get us but all appeals fell on deaf ears. I was in crisis and the police threw me out into the streets at well past midnight, knowing fully well that there was nothing but dangers lurking out there. I remember sitting outside the station to catch my breath but the Police would have none of it. I had to trek all the way to tipper garage with MM supporting me. I'm told we ran into 2 police-patrol vans: the white Division F Van and the blue-black Unilorin Police Post van, MM approached both for help and was turned down, he even offered to reimburse them for the Fuel to no avail. I remember getting home at 5.30am on Friday thoroughly spent. We went back to the police station around 11am for our phones and after getting them, I complained to the DPO about the day's events only to be told 'I owe you no apology'.
Did I miss the memo that empowered the Police to put Citizens in Harm's way or what?
Thank you!
