There are so many things involved in reading, it depends on your aim nd motive, it also depends on the school nd lecturer, reading nd understanding is a waste of time for some lectures, whereas it is what u need to pass some other lecturers course, so u need to kno d lecturer, for me I finished from futa, nd many people like to do la cram la pour because they get better grades doing DAT, even though u may not have an understanding of what ure writing. |

It heavily depends on the material. First, you have to work on your vocabulary. There is no way you can read and understand anything unless you can correctly interpret the words you see in the text. Next, you have to develop an interest for what you are trying to read. If not, your brain will treat it as inconsequential stimulus and no matter how hard you try, you won't get it. The next is to find what you intend to gain from that text. This can be easily achieved by checking the objectives which are usually at the beginning of the chapter, or the questions at the end. This piques your curiosity, and makes your brain more interested and focused on what you arr reading. After that, obtain writing materials. Of course, one can just simply read the book and and understand . . . unfortunately, not the entire populace has gifted IQ. Hence, they must make do. writing materials will be needed. Perhaps pen and paper or a board and markers/chalk. Having a writing material at hand is very important. Select your text carefully. Seriously, your choice of text can determine whether you will breed through the chapter like a storybook or forge painfully through it like a philosophy dissertation. I suggest going for the most simple and colorful/illustrated text. Not because you are an idiot, but because the brain is wired to assimilate mentally stimulating things. Do thought experiments and apply what yoiu have learnt to real life situations. Don't just read and dump the book. Find ways to apply what you have learned. Invent problems and solve them. Think and ruminate about the concepts you have learnt. Always learn yo ask . . . what if? That is the essense of learning. So we can apply. If you cannot apply, then don't bother learning. Don't study for exams. Studying for exams is counter intuitive, because when you study under the pressure of exams, your brain will simply memorize. Not understand. Now, this would not normally be a problem. Except am examination is specifically designed to test understanding. They will twist and turn the questions, combining it with other concepts to make sure that the person who studies for the exam only will never pass. Instead, study to know., to satisfy your curiosity, as a source of enjoyment, you know, stuff like that. If your brain associates pleasure with studying, then it will take things serious. Discuss studied topics with other like minds. I do not advocate studying with other people. It can be dangerous at times. As arguments and chitchat may arise. Also, the other person may not understand quickly. Pulling everyone else back, or someone may be be an extremely fast learner. Pulling everyone along and not giving them enough time to learn at their own pace. Hence I advice that each person studey the material at different times, in isolation. Then yoiu can come and discuss what you have learnt. That will serve to strengthen your understanding as you will be exposed to different ways of looking at the subject. And that's it. You can test yourself with the questions or crosscheck the objectives list to see if you have indeed understood the subject. They also serve another purpose. After all, practice makes perfect. |
