I have worked months, invested money and time to get my salon ready to be opened for business but stylist seemed to be difficult finding......I have been given several contacts as stylist but they don't always turn up even after agreeing to pay them on salary based instead of work and share. Even the one that came around, never came back again and they don't pick up their numbers to say why.

Somehow I think it's because it's a new salon and it's location is in the market but then again there several salons in that market

Please I need experienced salon owners to advice about the best way go about getting a stylists and also committed to do the job.

I had a similar experience. Opened up barbing salon. Was my first entrepreneurship experience. Paid one year rent & struggled over a year to get and keep a barber there until the rent expired.

People claimed the mistake was that I should have found someone who would manage it before paying rent or learn how to barb myself, and manage the place myself whiles looking out for a barber who'll take over.

Well I don't know if their analysis and solution was true. why do I say that? Because when people build companies they don't always have ready staffs to start the company. The send out adverts and most times the have influx of applicants (it is not always easy for starters though to get willing employees to risk working for an unsure startup company)


For you, however, you have acquired the salon and furnished it. So you have to do extra effort to get a stylist to mange it as soon as possible. Or else the more time goes the more frustrating it can become. Why not talk to other salon's with stylist around the area or other places. Be open to them and ask them to help you by letting out a staff for you.

Right now I am talking to someone who is in owerri, who said he is a professional stylist and wants 50k as salary? He would be coming from owerri to Abuja.

Abuja stylist want an already made 'big' salon so I noticed...or do I just get someone to manage it and how much will the person pay per month? Besides I have already bought lots of hair products and accessories I displayed for sale, how do I go about that?
Also I want to sometimes come in and maybe do some minor works like helping wash a customer hair etc. or would I just stay off when I hand it over to someone to mange? Help pls

Do u have some experience with hair styling? It is never a good idea to leave a new business to an employee even a stranger at that. You can only do that when you have built enough confidence with the staff. At the point where you let your hand off fully supervising the salon, I think the traditional way of doing it is agreeing on a monthly amount the person has to remit.

In my search for employees a friend once said, "look for people who are desperate". To you like I said salons around you who have staffs they are training & some are good enough to start off on their own. They cannot wait for an opportunity to leave their boss watch and kick off to manage a free salon like yours.

Yes it does. You have indirectly answered the question you didn't understand when you said I have to first develop confidence on the staff before leaving the salon to him to fully manage and we agree on a monthly remittance . that's like work share, the way is done in Abuja is 50:50. From my research I noticed that stylist are only willing to accept that in an already established salon with lots of clients....they are quite reluctant to work with a startup on a profit sharing basis, most prefer salary. Also the salon's location is in a market.

OP, you already identified the problem: your stylists unwillingness to work for a salary.

You have to look from their point of view; they are self employed and want to stay that way, besides they have the advantage because you have a salon and your rent is running, you are desperate.

Furthermore, they realize that they are expendable once the salon is up and running. You can renegotiate or get another stylist. And if they leave, the customers are more likely to remain with you if they have built a relationship with you.

So, right now, you must stop thinking of profits and try to stay afloat and break even. If you don't, you will lose everything. But they are already making money working where they are or at a makeshift salon.

Face reality and give the stylist what they want. Just find a way to be around and get to know your customers and the business.

@IsaacBuchi I know this is an old thread but please i would like to know if your Salon was registered with CAC. Please this is very important to me.
