I don't doubt it. I know old farmers who now do only plantain and oil palm.

Yam is a fussy plant. Pegging, tending to its branches and needs well-drained non-waterlogged soil, needs just right amount of rain & sunshine, ideally a cleared thick forest land.

Same fate might befall cocoa. It is another fussy plant.

Go to Agric section of NL, hardly anyone mentions cocoa or yam.

Until we modernise yam production, even some people in 9ja Middlebelt may give it up.

Has PDP/GEJ taken credit for this yet?

We actually need to export more, both Agric & finished goods. Good for jobs, earns hard currency and strengthens the Naira.

I asked several yam retailers in diaspora, to my dismay, the vast majority now import from Ghana.

They stopped getting from 9ja due to unreliability of supply.

What do you expect from a country whose citizens are slow to embrace technology. Ask the average farmer to invest in technology and see his reaction. They expect the government to subsidise everything. Consumer mentality.
