[s]I like him but he should try and do some songs in his native Ahaoda language...every time he's either rapping in Jamaican or Yoruba mixed with pidgin huh

Theres nothing wrong with it but he's forsaking himself...because I know for sure that all the artists he collaborates with will never rap in Ahoada so I don't get why he's bending himself like that

He is helping another language to flourish whilst leaving his own in the dark and becoming confused in the process

He is very talented which is what makes it more of a shame[/s]
wahz ya point really undecided

jesus!!! That's the point. Why must he if he doesn't want to?

Like must it be dt way?

Akon represents senegal with the flag very well but has never done a song or a line with the language.

Wale, represents Nigeria but wasn't doing it in yoruba..

My point, it is not must...abeg forget that part and enjoy the music.

Like I said, music is suposed to be a universal language.

cc: gurgle
Music is a universal language, yes. So why cant he insert his own dialect of that language

The artists you have mentioned are not an excuse for Burna Boy, Akon would also do well to try and drop some lines in his language. Besides that, their situations are different. They are based in the US and marketed towards a US audience. There are rappers in the UK with Nigerian heritage who only rap in English because that's all they really know, fine.

If Burna Boy were just to rap in English I would understand it more. At least its our national language and nobody in Nig owns it.

How can you equate that to rapping purely in Yoruba? Somebody who grew up in Port Harcourt, travelled and then returned to the same Port Harcourt. Wetin consign the guy with Yoruba language in the first place

Whichever way you look at it, its just promoting somebody else's culture over your own. At least English is a part of our culture shared between all of us, even though it was done forcibly.

**modified, ok. his mother is Yoruba and grew up in Lagos. But I still think what I think

Singing in a particular language depends on many things. His mother is Yoruba and was his manager until about a year ago. He was born in Port Harcourt but he grew up in Lagos.
Naturally a growing child pick up the mother's tongue better than the father's. There is hardly any of his song that he doesnt have Yoruba word or slangs. You need to understand his background. The fact that he has an Ahoada father does not mean that he sees himself as such and can also speak the language as Yoruba. Many of our people in the Niger Delta are also more comfortable speaking Pidgin than their local dialects and therefore should not complain if their kids cannot speak their native languages. Growing environment is a big factor in determining what language an individual speaks.
Angelique Kidjo is another example. Her father is Fon while the mother is Ketu Yoruba. She was brought singing in her mother's cultural troupe and was exposed to the core Yoruba tradition and culture. Today, seventy percent of her songs are in Yoruba and virtually all her top hits are in Yoruba.
I cannot blame Oluwaburna Ebunoluwa Damini Ogulu, let him sing in the languages he is comfortable with.
I understand all that- I didn't say he shouldnt sing in Yoruba, pidgin or whatever language he likes. I don't want to cast aspersions on his mother or his family or whatever, but women including myself should know that promoting your own side over your child's father's side is a dangerous game

However BB sees himself, whether his mother is Yoruba or an alien from space, he is still an Ahoada man according to Nigerian thinking, which I guess is the framework we are basing our assumptions on. At least if we had matrilineal custom I could understand where hes coming from. Even at that, both places should be included. So he should try and bring it in somewhere, because that's where he comes from whether hes comfortable with his father or not. I didn't say he should speak the language as fluently as he speaks Yoruba...but hes in Rivers state there..im sure there are some Ahoada people there who can teach him some slang to drop

I have a lot of family in Rivers state and a lot of them only speak Pidgin. I myself cant even speak Igbo. But at least all of us try and learn how to pronounce some "o di mmas" once in a while, I mean come on

I just googled the lady you mentioned and saw she is from Benin and I don't know their custom so I cant really comment. But even she should try and include some Fon in it. Whatever the custom is

Growing environment is a factor, yes of course. But now that his and my parents didn't teach us what they were supposed to, we can try and take the bull by the horns a little, although its difficult

Yeah theres nothing wrong with that, Yoruba is very established in African music.. its very marketable and it sells well

I don't have a problem with it I just think he could try and drop a few lines in Ahaoda because the thing is looking strange

When I first saw him I was excited to see an Ahaoda person in modern highlife because they have a good musical tradition...so I didn't get why he doesn't bring it out into the current musical world
definitely True.... Buh, are you in any way related to dis people?

Yeah I said that in my first statement. Yoruba is widely understood, and it sounds good. I didn't say he shouldn't be influenced by other places. The reggae is good and its something we don't see often- I really like it, I didn't say its not good
