Protesting Lawyers Disrupt NBA Session Over Amaechi! by DickDastardly(op): 7:13am On Aug 25, 2015
Members of the Port-Harcourt branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), on Monday disrupted a session of the law body’s annual conference over an invitation extended to former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Ameachi to address them.
The placard-carrying protesters opposed Ameachi’s presence on the ground that Amaechi’s government shut courts in the state for one year during his tenure.

The protest degenerated into brawl when Ameachi, who was the co-chairman of the session, wanted to speak and another group of lawyers challenged the protesters.

For about 30 minutes, the NBA President, Augustine Alegeh (SAN) and security personnel had to plead with the protesters before order was restored and the continuation of the session, tagged: ” Public perception of lawyers; is the esteem justified?”
Expressing his disappointment, the chairman of the session, Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, said: “It is sad that people who claimed to be learned gentlemen are irresponsible.”

Oshiomhole added: “This is the height of irresponsibility, lawyers shouting like touts. My privileges have been violated, the rules of the professional conducts thrown to the dust bin. I could not differentiate between the touts in motor park Benin City and the lawyers”.

Oshiomhole said that the scene must have been one of the most embarrassing moments for the Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Nasiru Ajana, who presented the lead paper.

In his remark, when he was allowed to continue, Ameachi said that while the disruption lasted he was telling his lawyer that it was politics and whether it would be proper to get others to disrupt any similar speech by his successor, Nyesom Wike.
Earlier, Justice Ajana had listed public perception of lawyers to include liar, encourage impunity, promoter of injustice, desirous of high legal fees, and arrogant,

While stating that the public perception must be taken seriously, Justice Ajana said that reputable lawyers all over the world are known for promoting fundamental rights.

Also in their contributions all the speakers agreed that negative public perception of lawyers erode confidence in the judicial system. They advised the lawyers to check the high legal fees and use their position as lawyers to improve the society.

He ensured they earned nothing for a whole year and now wants to come and tell them what exactly?
i dont blame him, i am more shocked at former comrade Adams Oshiomole who feigned not to understand the treatment amaechi got from the union members. How money and power absolutely corrupt former sound minds. cheesy

Re: Protesting Lawyers Disrupt NBA Session Over Amaechi! by Nobody:
1. Are those that invited Amaechi not members of the NBA?

2. Are they not aware of what and how he mistreated their colleagues of the Rivers state chapter when he was Governor of the state?

Oshiomhole is right to insult them to their faces because Lawyers have lost respect for themselves. Why invite Amaechi and Oshiomhole to a professional body conference, when the President has already addressed them and the Vice President is a member of the NBA. They also have Lawyer Governors but ignored them in the course of trying to help politicians whose profile are on a decline to launder their image.

Amaechi should have no place anywhere Lawyers are gathered in this country, if the NBA is a serious body.

One last thing...

I thought the NBA conference was a time for introspection? A time to reflect and brainstorm on how to improve on legal reforms. One day, NBA conferences would be turned to a campaign ground for drunks like Oshiomhole. I rest my case.

Despicable, politicians will kill this nation.

I can guess that Adams could also do the same in his state.

It's a pity it has to be that way but then Amaechi didn't treat the lawyers well while in office.

I love the part where Oshiomole reminded us of *Benin motor park touts* my question should be what has he done to curb the menace of touts in Benin or does he go around and cast aspersions on his own state?

Amaechi is a tout and a disgrace to mankind, how can he make Lawyers to be redundant for a year and he wants to speak on their gathering about which *yeye* topic.
