You people are too obsessed with cut off marks of Unity Schools. It is called UNITY Schools. Its purpose is not to produce excellent students, its purpose is to Unify the Federation by giving a chance to student from for every state in the country to attend. It is meant to be a platform where student from every part of this country come together and relate to each other in a conducive learning environment. It was designed to be a social integration mechanism. So Igbo people needs to stop making a mountain out of a molehill by always screaming injustice at the different cut off marks in Unity Schools. If you disagree with the policy of Unity schools, then do not apply to have your wards admitted into unity schools. After all what is the percentage of unity schools to the total secondary schools in Nigeria? I am sure it is not up to 0.001%. Unity schools does not stop state governments or even private citizens from setting up schools. Me for one do not intend sending my children to Unity schools. Why is it only the Igbos that complain of Unity schools? Bayelsa (Ijaws) with a cut off mark of 79 is not complaining. Do you want unity schools consisting only of Igbo students? The irony is that the same people complaining of Buhari not Adhering to federal character in appointing office holders are the same people complaining when federal character is applied to unity schools. Does the fact that student are admitted into unity schools with different cut off mark mean that they would be promoted and pass out using different grades? Will WAEC and NECO use different marking schemes to mark their exams? |

wirinet:You don't see anything wrong with a cut-off mark of 2 and 3, when others have as high as 139 in the same country? |

CSTR2:Is it by force to send your children to UNITY Schools? In fact how many UNITY schools are in Nigeria and what is the total student population in Nigeria. How many students from Yobe or even Bayelsa apply to be admitted into unity schools. If you are so obsessed with unity schools, then pressurize your state government to set up disunity schools. |

wirinet:There is something wrong with you just like most Nigerians. Why not reduce the cut-offs to 0 in the name of unity schools? And some nitwits will start boring us on how Nigeria is the phantom giant of africa. yeye. |

meccuno:You are the stupid one whose judgement has been beclouded by sentiments. For your information, in my own time, I was denied admission into an FGC (unity school) with a score that would guarantee a Northerner admission into any unity school of choice. This was because my state had filled up its own quota. Ignoramus like you do not know that quota is quota, and it informs what the cut of mark will be. The number of candidates who fill up that quota automatically sets the cut off mark for that state. Do you deny that it is a unity school system which was set up to bring diverse Nigerians together in heavily subsidised academic institutions? If not, why the cries? State government owned schools are available which also practise their own version of quota, first as a state indigene priority and secondly ensuring fair local government spread among the indigenous applicants. Any one who wants to be treated as a merit student should apply to a private institution where there is no quota system, and sadly no subsidised education. |

CSTR2:Do you understand that it is set up for the sole purpose of unifying nigerian teenage students and it is heavily subsidised for that purpose? Do you understand that no state is cheated by ensuring each state fills up its quota only? Do you understand that the scores from the individual state's candidates determine what score is set as the cut off to fill only that state's quota? Why the cry about how the Yobe or Zamfara state fill up its quota? What is your business with their state quota and how it is filled up, which is already guaranteed? Are there no non-subsidised private schools to apply to, who have no business with quota, but only rely on best scores? |

melzabull:Keep on crying about Hausa/Fulani. Secondly, I don't know of a yolobaa tribe. I'm Yoruba. Judging by your spelling, you certainly are a disgrace to any school that chose to give you an admission. Fill up your guaranteed quota with good high scores and let the disadvantaged states fill up their own quota with poor low scores. Nobody is cheating the other, you are entitled to only your quota as long as it is operated by the federal government who set it up for the goal of unity, and who also heavily subsidise it. If you want merit only, apply to private schools where you actually pay the true worth of the value you get to receive. |

StOla:Only willfully ignorant would believe that a student with 2 points and another with 139 points are at par intellectually.. Student with 2 points turns out to be a banker, lawyer, doctor and engineer- she/he is going to screw things up while the student with 139 pts is going to likely be an exceptional student/worker with less supervision.. Maybe that's why Naija is a jungle. |

CSTR2:I don't see anything wrong especially since they are only filling up their OWN quota in federal government owned institutions. Have they deprived your state if its own quota? What is your concern with how the disadvantaged states fill up a quota that is theirs? Let the high scoring candidates from Anambra and elsewhere who do not measure up amongst their own seek admission into a regular institution where education is not cheap, but is on merit. |
| Re: Shocking: Cut-off Point Into Federal Unity Colleges For Yobe Is 2, Taraba, 3, An by StOla: 2:24pm On Sep 01, 2015 |
melzabull:You are the one ranting since you do not even understand the system you are criticising, and it is of no effect to the reality of what is an established system in a federal government institution. I hope I have managed to enlighten your dark path, and set you on the road to objective analysis. |
| Re: Shocking: Cut-off Point Into Federal Unity Colleges For Yobe Is 2, Taraba, 3, An by StOla: 2:41pm On Sep 01, 2015 |
adconline:Nobody said they're at par intellectually. The schools are not the regular academic institutions. Anyone who feels slighted can apply to a regular school where merit is the priority, and fees are equally of high merit. The only reason we are having this debate is because many do not know why the unity schools were set up and what the admission policy is. Also, most do not even understand that cut off marks are only released as a result of scores awarded to candidates after sitting for the entrance examinations. It is a good thing that Anambra scores high, hence a high cut off mark to fill up its own quota. It is a sorry case that Yobe scores low and with even very low applications, its cut off mark will be very low. However, it is only your business how you populate your own state quota/slots, not with how others populate their state quota. The competition for admission is strictly with your own state peers to fill up your state's quota. I can guarantee you that the students with 2points if well educated in the secondary school will have a chance to improve, else they don't even graduate from secondary school eventually - something very common in the 1990s amongst Northerners in schools like Queens College Yaba. |

StOla:Mugu, there is nothing for any sane human to understand in a mediocre system of education that can't get our Igbo children anywhere in the ever increasing competitive world of science and technology. We do not want children whom our children are better than educationally and are not eager to seek for any improvement in one class room with our children cause there is nothing our children can learn from those imbeciles. We need high rigorous and hign demanding system of education for our children like it's obtained in the developed world and be able to open the future doors of success for our children to be able to compete with others from the developed world. Nama get this simple facts into your thick skull. |
| Re: Shocking: Cut-off Point Into Federal Unity Colleges For Yobe Is 2, Taraba, 3, An by StOla: 3:04pm On Sep 01, 2015 |
Bialegend:Must you always insult in a debate? Good mindset about your Igbo mentality, it is admirable and evident in the cut off marks. The very reason why you have to compete more among yourselves to fill up just your own state quotas. However, you cannot spill over into the quota of another state. It is their guaranteed quota not yours. If you feel unchallenged by the academically poor Northerners, then simply apply to private schools were admission is strictly by merit and you get academic competition for a hefty sum. The unity schools do not even constitute 1% of secondary schools in Nigeria, so why the cry as if the high scoring states end up having most of their teenagers out of school just to accommodate poor Yobe? Lots of schools abound the nation, must we all get into the subsidised federal government operated schools where the rules have been designed to be fair to all with state quotas? |
| Re: Shocking: Cut-off Point Into Federal Unity Colleges For Yobe Is 2, Taraba, 3, An by OlujobaSamuel: 3:19pm On Sep 01, 2015 |
some peeps don't understand what quota means. even in tertiary institutions, we still have it there. Why do we have a rule of how many % of science and % of art that must be admitted, why is the cut off for medicine different from law, law not the same with accounting? Prof Nebo said our politicians needs mental check, but I think the check needs to be extended to the electorates also, because I wonder why we reasoned me, I and myself all the time. |

StOla:Pls using words that you can't intellectually and contextually apply in this case. If 2 points equal 130 points why take the exam in first place?? In your text, u are of the opinion that heterogeneity should take precedence over meritocracy?? We use exam to determine eligibility based on intellectual performance and ability.. |

adconline:I'm not too sure you live in Nigeria or you even know or applied to these Federal Government Colleges (unity schools) in your own time? The "Unity" in the name is the purpose of setting up the schools. They are an aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War. Older federal government schools like Kings College, Queens College were also included with the new set of schools mostly set up in the 1970s and 1980s. It is strictly based on quotas but designed to have catchment areas also for the hosting state/region of each of the schools. It is not a system for school of merit or school of the academically gifted. It is a unity school system and heterogeneity is the primary goal so as to foster unity. As I have earlier mentioned, each state is only competing with its own self to fill up its own quota. Anambra has no business with how Yobe populates its own quota. The exams are just to establish what the cut off marks will be for each state to populate its OWN quota. Also they are not the only secondary schools in Nigeria. The unity schools do not even constitute 1% of the total school's tally. Everyone is just crying that they are not allowed to steal into Yobe's quota at government subsidised education. |
