A 20-year-old scavenger has been given 12 strokes of the cane by an Abuja Magistrate’s Court for stealing a compressor at Byazhin, Kubwa in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Abdulahi Mohammed of Byazhin road, who was charged with theft, an offence that contradicts section 287 of the penal code, was also sentenced to two weeks imprisonment with an option of N2, 000 fine.
The prosecutor, Mr. Babajide, told the court that the complainant, one Zachang Aji Sala of Byazhin, on August 24, reported at the Kubwa police station, how the accused stole his compressor valued at N12, 000, kept inside his shop. He said the accused was, however, arrested with the item while attempting to escape.
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and was ordered to be given 12 stokes of the cane by Magistrate Mohammed Kutigi.
In a related case, three scavengers were arraigned before an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for allegedly deflating the car tyres of the Divisional Police Officer, Dutsen Alhaji and denying her access to the car.

The accused, all of Dutsen Alhaji, were charged with joint act, mischief and inciting disturbance.
The police prosecutor, Arziki Kaura, told the court that the complainant, ASP Emmanuel Abba, O/C Surveillance Team ‘A,’ attached to Dutsen Alhaji Police Station, on August 29, arrested the accused when CSP Aisha Yusuf, DPO, Dutsen Alhaji, was invited by the district head of community for a meeting.

He said the accused conspired and deflated her vehicle tyres, damaged and removed the plate number, and in the process, denied her access to the car before they were arrested.
When the charges were read to the accused, they pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 each by the judge, Mohammed Marafa with a reasonable surety who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned to September 30.
