You know Ake is the first of four instalment of Wole Soyinka's memoir right?, I own and read all 4, ['Ake', 'Isara', 'Ibadan' and 'You Must Set Forth at Dawn']
in case you are interested in some of his academic essays, I'll be honoured to recommend, I've read some and they changed my perception of my heritage, religion, global institutions, and even history generally, well you might want to start with his 2013 book; 'Of Africa - Wole Soyinka'
My admiration for him stems from his tendency of not pretending to have answers for every question he raises or observations he makes, and of course his style of writing(satire), in those memoirs, you'll see him narrating his buffoonery, even recent ones, which suggest to me he doesn't take himself too seriously and also attest to his frankness and honesty, little wonder many disapprove of him when he treats their f@&k up just the way he will treat his (OBJ comes to mind)

tupacshakur:
Ake reminds me of...

Wole Soyinka's "Ake - The years of childhood".

What a good read!

They are cousins, Soyinka once said it in one of his interviews years back.

@Topic, Fela is from a great family - check out his mother, his father, his brother and his children, then his grand-father. Na them get Nigeria?
Bros, that family has soooo much for Nigeria across all generations. I remember when Olikoye died and one of his sons was interviewed and was asked if he or any of his siblings would step into their father's shoes, he replied by telling them that the Kuti family had done too much for Nigeria sef and anyone looking for martyrs can donate their own family members for Nigeria, say no be only Kuti family sabi die for Nigeria matter. I found it hilarious. grin grin. The interview was on Channels, I think.

1879..... And you call him a Nigerian?
That was long before this zoo came into existence...
He prolly would have made history as the first drug baron if he were born in the zoo era.

Why then should Fela's father deny him his music career? huh

His methods and genre of his songs were too controversial then I guess. Also, his grandfather was a missionary who composed Christian songs. That was very prestigious then being a missionary.

Thats true. My late Grandpa was born in 1902. He once told me that he and most people around him did not know that they had been made 'Nigerians' until around 1920. My Grandfather was born an Igbo man but not a Nigerian
