@sosolid007: You are welcome. 25 x 40 should be able to accommodate 1000 pieces of fish but I will advise you to under stock rather than over stock. Every one is clamoring for change and as such change has indeed happened in this country so also change has happened in grow out catfish production, it is no longer changing to local feeds at 1 and half month, it is now between 25- 27 days maximum. You only need to feed your fingerlings with 0.5mm, 0.8mm and 1.2mm before switching to local feeds which start from 2mm (indomie size). I have used both feeds in the past but I still prefer coppens to Ziggler any time any day. You don't need to get any tanks. You only need to channel the water using pipes to each of the pond from the borehole. You don't need to get any filter for the borehole. As regards hatching, Robonski will attend to that for you. I don't make feeds but you can easily do local feeds at any nearest feedmills |

ab1x: Hello ABx1, Thanks for the response. Do local feeds float because i noticed that the fingerlins find it hard to eat from the ground and that is why i use coppens for a month and a half before i switch to local. Except you mean local feeds can float now. if that is the case i need to get to your feedmill fast. Which feed mill can convert my feeds to floating. Please advise |

sosolid007:wow that's great. Kudos to yoi. How was ur sales? Did you make profit in this first one? |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by sosolid007: 10:41pm On Sep 13, 2015 |
WhoBeThisMan: Just sold 297 which weighed 300kg at N550 per KG. I am holding out for the big sells such as 200kg upwards but i get 5kg, 10kg offers almost everyday but there is a market and that was my worries inirtially but i need not fear anymore. hence, going to increase capacity, stock a bit less because i have learnt that it is not by quantity but by quality. If you can get each fish at maturity to weigh 2kg in 5-6 months then you will gain more rather than stocking a lot and a fish weighs less than 1kg. 1 Like |

sosolid007: The kind of feed mills that I am talking about here does not float. Don't get me wrong, there are some local feeds that floats however research have shown that they do not produce the kind of result the sinkable local feeds produced. I have one feed mill here that does floating local feeds but at the creation of the feed mill, a lot of people patronize them but when they tried it and did not get result they had to switch back to sinkable local feeds. Of course, I found out why they did not get the same result like the sinkable local feeds, I learnt that most of the ingredient (soya, gnc, maize etc) go through boiling process before they are used to make the floating feeds. It all implies that all the nutritional value must have been extracted out to make the local floating feeds. To reduce wastage when using local sinkable feeds, you need to apply on a spot feeding method and take your time to feed them gently and stop when you know that they have reached their saturation point. |

sosolid007:ab1x has done justice to your questions. But for feeding aspect I have used both coppens and zeigleI but i prefer zeigler gold to coppens any day. But the most important is your overall management cos you can use both feed and still fail if proper management is not in place.. when you are ready for the hatchery let me know. Thanks 2 Likes |

mercylicious: I was doing some findings the other day and I categorised some wonderful fish farmers...ab1x For feed formulation, excelsior for overall management, lagbaja for outstanding technology, Tokugawa for the construction of ponds earthen/concrete, Juvefarms for production of fries. I don't think anybody can beat this team 6 Likes 2 Shares |

@abi & robon... u guys r onedafu! Pls can my fish adjust to spot feeding? The breed is hetro they don't do surface feeding lik d clarias, u hardly see their full body... They grow bigger n eat alot... |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by fzero: 3:48am On Sep 15, 2015 |
chilanfarms:Continuous feeding on one spot can make the fishes adjust to spot feeding, quicker to adopt in floating feeds. |

mercylicious: A month old fish should be able to pick 2mm local feeds also known as indomie size. Peradventure, they cannot pick it you can either continue with 1.2mm or 1.5mm because both has 56% and 48% respectively crude protein. Please, do not use 2mm coppens because it has 42% and 45% which is quite low considering their age. 1 Like 1 Share |

I have a question though; what size of pond is adequate for 5000 catfishes to table size, both concrete and earthen ponds in ft dimension. |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by ab1x: 7:17pm On Sep 15, 2015 |
Ttalk: This is better. Not everybody understand abbreviation. However, comparisons of FCR among different species may be of little significance unless the feeds involved are of similar quality and suitability. |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by dy4life: 10:14pm On Sep 15, 2015 |
ab1x: All things being equal, your fishes should be around 200 – 300 grams in 2 months with floating feed alone, if they are being fed properly; after then, you can switch to sinking feed and give them the following feed sizes: 200 – 300 grams: 2mm feed size 300 to 600 grams : 4mm feed size 600 grams to 1kg+ : 6mm feed siz email. Pls I need your explanation on this ab1x n the rest guru in the house 1 Like |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by ab1x: 9:12am On Sep 16, 2015 |
dy4life: All things cannot be equal. All other things being equal, there is no fixed KG to attain within those month. However, if the seed is alright and you are able to manage your farm very well, then be expecting an AVERGAGE of 2.0 to 2.5KG in 6months. 6months is a very long period of time so getting 1KG plus is not only a waste of money but also a waste of time. 1KG fish is not a fish at all, it is called smallest here...small start from 1.2 to 1.3 KG....thus, 20/21/22 pieces of fish must weigh 25KG 1 Like 1 Share |

Oga ab1x how economical are those your formula cos from my calculations it will cost around #7k per 15kg which is more expensive than coppens. Abeg enlighten me. 1 Like |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by ab1x: 3:37pm On Sep 16, 2015 |
Omoedeki: It is quite economical. There will be reduction in the price of the feeds as the fish continue to grow. The logic is that when the fish is small they tend to consume quality feeds which is quite costly but as times goes by there will be reduction in the cost of feeds. By the time they reach 3 and half month to four month, the cost per kg should not be more than 250 naira per kg |

Hello,I've been following this thread for some weeks now.And all I can say is wow.... I could have failed if I hadn't gotten the knowledge I've acquired on this forum .. I'm in my final semester in school and I've been thinking on what to do after school because I've heard stories of school leavers who are unemployed. I want to start with 1000 fingerlings stocked in 2 9.8x8.5x4 ft ponds.2 further ponds of same size will be built before they reach 3 months at which they will be sorted into (250 in each pond) with 6-8 thousand liters in each pond. I don't want to exceed 1000 fish ... so they can have optimum space to grow to their potential size and attain a profitable weight.I have acquired a land with the help of my dad with borehole... I'm still sourcing for capital for equipments, stocking and feeding for 5-6 months. Question Since an aerator basically pumps air into the water. hence, increasing DO level. Can I modify the compressor of a refrigerator to be used for this purpose as it could be cheaper yet effective. |
