Cement paved roads is the best for our climate.
But to last longer, the right materials and procedures has to strictly followed.

There's cement paved road construction ongoing in Port Harcourt (Igwuruta/Eneka/Rumukwurusi road) what's going on there should be best described as waste of Rivers State resources because the load bearing capacity of that road is zero.
Any of the completed section doesn't last more than a month and start developing pot holes.
When the pot holes become bigger, the reinforcement rods used for the road construction also pose another danger to vehicles.

My take is, if we must adopt cement or concrete paved roads, let's do it the right way.

Most of these 'developed' nations are in colder climes so it make sense to build with asphalt and even then the construction companies do so knowing that they will be called back to refurbish the road shortly. These companies are thinking of the bottom line at all times.

Climate is not a barrier for using asphalt. In asphalt mix design, you can actually design for any type of weather condition or climate. The new technology now is SUPERPAVE Concept

Cement was used in the ALUU road and then overlaid with Asphalt but as usual the gutters got full and then the waters overflows on to the road in a heavy downpour and the road is deteriorating big time, exposing the rods which is now tearing the tires of motorists.

i see yet another opportunity, tires that would suit both roads would have to be developed creating job opportunity and also check out the outburst of cement production that this country would see which would also increase the demand for labour, however this are only but short run effect which will equilibrate in the long run

Here in China, we use it.

Abia state is known for building substandard roads. Praise something that is good for once. Abia builds roads without chippings. Once they grade and pour coaltar with white sand. They lay asphalt leaving out the chippings solid base.

Thats why you see them overlaying roads every blessed year. Is that what you want Mr civil Engr and how is that cheaper?

The cement used for road construction is same used for building but it may be supplied in bulk from the cement factory using cement mixer trucks.

Rather the cement used for constructing bridges is different from that used for roads. 52.5 R. 42.5 R and 32.5 R. The first being for bridges.

How did you arrive at such a conclusion? A lot of the roads in Texas are cement based and I am sure the life span of tires in this clime is not much different from that in areas that have predominantly asphalt based roads.

It is a good idea if done properly with the right materials,expertise and equipment.
I muust say I am not impressed with this photograph. The base on to which the concreted is being poured does not seem to be adequately prepared. It could be reinforced with steel.

The engineers must plan for the contraction/expansion of materials used in our hot weather conditions
If properly done it should be like the tarmac at an airport and last for 50 years at least

Cement based roads or rigid pavements are used in swampy or water logged areas. Some of the roads constructed in bayelsa state and patani, delta state are rigid pavements!

According to Ikpeazu, though the cost of this technology is higher than the conventional construction methods..
Gov I think u should go for asphalt which is more cheaper so that the construction can be extended to other bad roads please.
adding that roads constructed with this technology has a sustainability guarantee of ten to twenty years.
I believe Sir Sam Mbakwe used asphalt when Abia was under the old Imo State. Which most of the surviving roads are of his. How many years?

I really miss Ikot Abasi,I love that town especially that Alscon side(both the ferrostal,Township,soweto and bedgers camp)at night.
