Hello car gurus
It's that time when I want a new car and am at a loss at what brand and technology to go for.
I am all for the hybrid but the opinion am getting has not been encouraging. The negative reviews range from unavailability of parts, lack of experienced mechanics, battery life span amongst others.
Anyone with useful information about this class of vehicles including the care and maintenance should enlighten me on this points, and also any other point worth noting.

Hybrid cars? It's a no no for me, at least in Nigeria. But if you think that's what you need, go ahead and buy it. At least, Siena, GAZZUZZ, Decotech, lomomike (can't say if he's still a nairalander), etc. will eat whenever you come calling.

Yea.

1. Make sure you avoid flooded(water) area as if you are driving a bag of salt.

2. Make sure you have enough money to replace the battery when it slowly but surely goes down. My friend has parked his car for the past 8 months because they are telling him the battery is about 700k.

3. Most Nigerians mechanics are still finding it difficult to work on when there is a problem because most the components are electrical like ABS SYSTEM, A/C Compressor, etc. Go to most mechanic shops and see the number of abandoned hybrid cars. That's all I can say for now.

Meanwhile, it's a car you will enjoy when it's still new. GOODLUCK BRO.

We're talking of Hybrid vehicles. They use rechargeable batteries up to ten times larger than the battery you are used to with capacity to store much more power.

hybrid cars have special batteries apart from the one all cars use to start their engine. this batteries are mostly placed at the chair areas of the car. This is where the energy generated are stored and then used to propel the car when power is needed. So basically hybrids use little petrol and battery to support reason why they have the best fuel economy technology.

if you get a good one with the ba3 still intact you won't have issues with it, I know 4 people using that car,
1. Toyota highlander hybrid 3yrs running no issue
2. Toyota camry (aka muscle) 4yrs running, this guy always stay with mechanics when working on his car
3. Toyota prius 1yr
4. ford escape 3months old rearly driven

I believe all these points are just because the technology is sort of new around here.
When more people start using it, importers would invest in the parts and accessories.
This is the same way it happened with automatic transmissions and the v6.

Guys, thanks for the education. Much appreciated. What about those cars that use compressed gas and petrol in dual-fuel mode? What are they called??

I don't think you are actually buying a hybrid because of its design after all the most common hybrid (toyota prius) looks like a soulless bonny fish, I think you are actually after the fuel efficiency/economy. Why don't you try a diesel engine, it's the closest to electric and hybrid in terms of fuel efficiency. As for the gas thing there are everyday cars with that technology but I have only come across it in VW GOLF. Goodluck with your purchase.

because of all these rumours and here say I believe you all know you can still drive a hybrid car even if the battery is dead it will run on engine only

No one will make a car that will strand you when the battery part of the system is not working.

Most of the hybrid systems are easy to fix if you know which component needs service by just google or youtube the fault.

Most common I have seen is the air filter and the coolant system pump.

to buy and replace se this vid

To be clear which battery is really bad I'll say replace the easy one first

@OP, it seems you have done your homework, you have elucidiated the concerns with hybrid already.except you're buying a new car, although sometimes you might be lucky if it's a used vehicle. besides most american airlines do not accept to put hybrid batteries on board to Nigeria claiming contraband, only emirates accepted to ship and did ship.

on the 700k bill, i think is over priced, trust me you can fix with less, say 200k, worse case scenario 300-400k
Re: Hybrids, Anyone? by sultaan(m): 7:56pm On Aug 21, 2015
Battery packs don't usually have problem even if the battery is depleted the gas engine still runs the car so most cases is cause by our mechanic hack job or flooded hybrid sold to unsuspecting people
Re: Hybrids, Anyone? by Originalsly: 3:18am On Aug 22, 2015
Forget about battery life...before the battery die you would've long got tired of the car and got rid of it. I would suggest you get a hybrid by Toyota. When the US FG was giving subsidy for the development of the technology....Toyota immediately took up the offer as well as Honda. Each year the subsidy was reduced and Toyota is the one that made the most during that time. Through their subsidised trial and error they make the most reliable hybrids period.. Toyota Primus is rated as the top most reliable car...and over 200K miles without headache or burning a hole in its owner's pockets. Get it new.....or imported from US. ..and stay very Farrar from roadside mechanics.
Re: Hybrids, Anyone? by ikefor(m): 1:13pm On Sep 19, 2015
@Sultan, yes you can run the car when the fuel is out for a short time before the hybrid battery will eventually run down. As this stresses the battery beyond the 40-80% SOC threshold set by the hybrid HV ECU, it will ultimately lead to one or more blocks becoming weak. When one battery block in the Hybrid battery becomes weak, and a DTC code is set, you will have all kinds of attendant performance and drive-ability issues. If one continues to drive the car, usually for about a month of so, the car will pack up and no longer drive (prius) or drive and intermittently stop (Camry hybird) and the extend of damage to the battery enhanced until the battery is reconditioned or replaced.

Sorting out a HV battery issue quicker can be cheaper than when persistent drive-ability issues have emerged from extended driving with a weak battery block because the heat or sometimes leakage from the bad block will affect other blocks in the battery bank.

The hybrid battery can last for as much as 400k miles but there has been instances of failure below 200k, depending on usage, there are certain things you can do to improve the odds for extended HV battery life, but to keep things short, i would say the most important is to always use your AC.

Why not just seek out Siena explain exactly what is wrong with the car, how long you have owned it and what type of service or what happened just before the problem started doing the wrong thing will only make things worse

What exactly is wrong with your Hybrid?

What dash error messages are you getting? Have you had the car scanned for codes? Has any attempt been made to "repair" your car been made, if yes, what has been done?

What was the last thing that was done to your car, prior to it being laid up?

I did not make a mistake.

That is the price of the HV battery fitted to the 2012-2015 Toyota Prius Plug-In. Very different to that of the HV battery fitted to the regular gen 3 Prius from 2009-2015.
