Dontbeused:
Pls also ask?? WHY Brazil has PETROBRAS?
You can't compare Petrobas and the issues raised. Petrobas is the Nigeria equivalent of NNPC. No one is asking him to privatise it.

@Topic: Nigeria lack the capacity and political will to run State-owned airline and the refineries. We should open up for privatisation on condition that they go through a transparent process.

Most businesses in the country today operate on low margin not to talk of refineries. FG failed with NEPA, NITEL and MINING. Tell me why and how the refineries will succeed.

If Buhari is wise enough, he should ask himself what will become of our national refineries if Dangote refineries start operations by 2017.

Before elections, he stated, i do not know what is subsidy. After Dangote granted an interview urging the FG not to scrap subsidy, PMB came back telling us that he hasnt found enough reasons to stop subsidy.

Could you tell the government of Jonathan, after it had privatized the power sector, was still funding the DISCOS?

MARKET LED ECONOMICS WORKS WHERE THE STATE IS FUNCTIONAL AND NOT IN DYSFUNCTIONAL PUBLIC SECTOR LIKE OURS.

A PUBLIC SECTOR WHERE ROAD WORTHINESS IS ISSUED WITHOUT A SINGLE CHECK ON THE CAR, WHERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ONLY EXISTS FOR COLLECTION OF LEVIES AND WHERE IT SEEMS THAT CORRUPTION IS SYNONYMOUS WITH CIVIL SERVICE.

GET THE STATE TO WORK AND THEN LAUNCH YOUR MARKET LED ECONOMICS¬

THE SO CALLED MARKET LED ECONOMICS OF THE RECENT PAST LED TO A VERY FEW BUYING PRIVATE JETS IN A PLACE WHERE THE POOR HAVE TO QUEUE FOR KEROSENE, LED TO UNPRECEDENT LEVEL OF CORRUPTION, ELECTICITY TARRIFFS SHOT THROUGH THE ROOF, WHEREAS THERE WAS HARDLY LIGHT, AND PETROL BECAME SCARCE EVEN AT A HIGHER PRICE. TRILLIONS WERE PAID OUT AS SUBSIDIES, TO PUNISH THE PROTESTING POOR.

SOME SAID THAT THE SUBSIDY ON OIL SHOULD HAVE BEEN REMOVED. IF THAT HAPENNED WE PROBABLY WILL BE PAYING N300 PER LITRE NOW, BECAUSE 'THE BOYS' WOULD STILL HAVE BEEN PAID ANYHOW.

Can the OP, or anyone for that matter, name 3 countries that are totally capitalist?

What is the major driving point behind devaluation of currency?

N750 (seven hundred and fifty naira) in 1983, would get you $1,000 (one thousand dollars).

Today, N750 would get you $3.

Tell me, what have we gained so far in devaluation?

I don't know what you guys are in a hurry for, other than most of you are jobless...he's only been there for few months and you won't all stop ranting...in country of over 170 million you could only find a 72 year old retired general with integrity but you are still wailing...how many ministers have added value to your lives in the last 16yrs again?
Congrats "Mr Jobberman" for having a job. cheesy grin

I usually ignore uncivilized comments such as the bolded but I have decided to give you the benefit of the doubt and dignify you with a response. Some of us are here to share and exchange information and that does not in any way make us jobless.

It seems you do not realize that there is a difference between a personal opinion and a post/article. It is not every topic that is posted on Nairaland that is solely the opinion of the OP. Some threads are just meant to generate intelligent debates, observe arguments of both sides of the divide and learn.

Furthermore, constructive criticism is not the same as opposition. There will always be arguments for and against different economic theories/practices. Even in management, it is believed that there is no one best way to do things.

I am done here. cool

Devaluation is a question of demand and supply, if you dont sell anything to other countries, you have to buy their currency with yours. Leading to you having less of your own currency, after which you have to print currency (currency is by fiat) then you print more, which devalues it. That is an extremely simplistic view but it should get you a bit of an intro. Nigeria can either devalue its currency or simply stop importing because it wont print money (and hence maintain a fixed money supply instead of floating it)

Socialism is a failed paradigm, Govt is not in the business of making a profit, hence govt run enterprises are inherently inefficient and cannot compete in an open market.
Emmahunk:
Nigerians and English. What has the Country benefited from all the years of Privatization?
Take power for instance, despite the fact that hundreds of thousands were thrown into the labour market, power supply had even became worse until the coming of PMB.
Since you chose to talk about his antecedents, don't forget that
IF PMB SAYS HE CAN DO SOMETHING THAT BY THE GRACE OF GOD, HE SURE WILL DO IT. Abeg make una leave him alone for now

More like distorted-- I wish there is a more subtle way to say this; just too much 'over simplification and distortion'.

BTW, back to my question, the number one driving goal of devaluation is, to stimulate foreign investment/inflow of forex and drive exports.

Check my profile if you do have the time, and read my 2 topics on devaluation.

National carrier, nothing was mentioned about National Carrier

Subsidy: This has been on going before this regime came to power, the previous regime spent over N5bn on fuel subsidy between 2006-2013, over N10trillion has been spen over the last 8yrs, the amount spent on subsidy was higher than the 2014 nd 2013 national budgets put at N4.69bn and N4.93 bn .

Refinery privitazation was touted by the previous regime who wanted to sell everthing in the country.

So get your facts right, this regime has alot to fix in the country, 4 yrs isnt enough, but if it can fix some of the problems created by its predecessors we should see significant improvement over time. STOP WAILING . grin

Ha so you mean Nigeria will return to 1983 because we now have working refineries and a state-led economy?

This article is nothing but a cheap shot at the Presidency by cabals that have been running Nigeria down.

For your information, a state-led economy is an economy that protects the interest of the people against the will of a few individuals and cabals in the private sector.

There is NO totally capitalist country on earth -- at least none that I know of.

All western countries including the US, are 'mere' glorified 'democratic-socialist' countries/mixed economies.

People tend to confuse socialism with communism (extreme socialism).

it is a pity how we have become very lazy in an internet savvy generation that we are in where any info you need is at your disposal. For your info,BP is not owned by the british govt as it is public liability company(plc) with its shares owned by british, american and other investors or businessmen. Google is your best friend

I have read it, I will respond in detail on your own topics. Needless to say... I disagree with you, currency devaluation is not something any one can control, it is one of the few things that have to float unless you have a surplus in your balance of trade.
