I bought a 2002 Mazda Millenia off a member here on Nairaland for my wife and I must say it has been amazing. The car is wonderful and loaded with features for its manufacturing date. I am guessing Millie as its enthusiasts call it is Mazda's luxury range.

Now to the problem. Last week Friday wifey was on her way to work and the car died on the highway. All efforts to restart it failed. When wifey called and told me what happened, I did some remote troubleshooting with her help to eliminate some possible causes I am aware could stall a car in motion. When I was sure it wasnt Timing Belt, it wasnt dried out Radiator Coolant, I requested the car be towed back home so roadside mechanics wont fiddle with it.

On getting home myself in the evening on that day, I went to check the car and noticed that the battery has lost all form of power. I mean completely drained of any form of energy. The following morning, I called a battery charger to bring me another battery. When the battery was connected, you guys wont believe what happened grin. The car headlights came on but the switch was in off position. I fliped the switch back and forth but the light didnt go off. I tried starting the car, it was rolling but wont start. I however noticed that the dash light was coming on and going off at will, the speedometer and tacometer dials were jumping and returning at will, the AC will come on and wont turn off even when I press the off button, the radio has no power. In all this, the engine will crank but the car wont start.

Next I reached for my (Lemur Blue Driver) Bluetooth ODBII scanner to do a diagnosis on the car hoping I will get a result. When I plugged in the scanner and turned the key to on position, the scanner's signature blue light didnt come on and I was worried. Then I cranked the car and to my amazement, the car started. I raised the engine and it raised well, put the gear in D and it went forward, put it in reverse and it followed but still the scanner light didnt come on and my ipad didnt see it to connect to either. As the engine was running, I unplugged the scanner and the car was still idling well but when I tried to raise it, the engine stalled again and all the dash dial started the "Kukere" dance once again and the AC too came on and wont go off if I press the off button.

I repeated the steps severally and got the same result. Car will start with ODBII scanner connected but radio has no power. Car will raise properly and even move. Car will not start with ODBII scanner removed. All dash dial will be flipping back and forth with ignition in on position, dash light going on and off, AC coming on and wont go off with off button pressed.

Abeg my seasoned auto engineers, gurus and fellow enthusiasts. Wetin I go call this kind sickness? What is the car suffering from?

Meanwhile, I live in Lagos and we do have lots of water along the way from my house to hit the main road whenever it rains.

You have water in your electronics, remove the battery terminal and stop using the car to avoid more damage.

Simply Leave The Scanner Connected And Drive Around Your Area, If It Doesn't Go Off, Then You've Found A Way Out Temporarily Till The Solution Is Proffered. grin grin grin
Just Kidding. Obviously The Problem Is Electrical.. Disconnect The Battery And Reconnect. Check The Terminals. The Battery Relay Or Fuse. If Don't Find Anything Wrong With Them, Then I Suggest You Get An Electrical Expert To Diagnose The Problem. cool

Oga GAZZUZZ abeg which one is electronics? Is it the ECU ala Brainbox? I know the brainbox is somewhere behind the radio on the center console. How will water get in there or are there other electronics on the car that could cause such problems?

Do open all carpets, rugs, underlays, cover for fusibles, seats, and allow sun to dry it. I am actually scared of your ECU if you've really got water in that car and it touches the ECU.

I won't even contemplate driving the car with the scanner attached to it. It might cause more damage and it could also fry my treasured scanner. Buying and delivery here is a lil'shy of N40k for a bluetooth ODBII.

UPDATE ON CAR GONE WILD:

Yesterday as promised, I tore wifey' scar apart as much as possible looking for traces of water on the inside and on its electronics. Bottom line, I didn't find any trace of water inside. I even brought out the brain box which was a tough job (pix attached), opened it and didn't find any trace of water. Note: I didn't touch any of the components to avoid reconfiguring its chips accidentally via static electricity even though I did attempt discharging myself by touching my flat front porch railings.

After checking all the suspected places and didn't see any trace water, I had to put the car back together. The problem is still there o and there is even an issue I didn't mention. Whenever the ignition is turned to the off position, the car looses all forms of electricity and the clock and AC will reset. The roof, hood and door lights don't come on anymore when I open either the door or hood. The car still doesn't star except I plug in my ODBII Diag Tool. I can't recall if I mentioned that when I start the car with the ODBII scanner connected, the car works normal except the radio that doesn't get powered and the MIL will be pulsating (not flashing). If I remove the scanner, the car still idles and can engage in all transmissions but park which stalls the car immediately. Also if I attempt to rev up the while its idling with the ODBII scanner removed, the engine stalls. But with the ODBII, it will rev and even drive and park without stalling.

Abeg my gurus in the house, this one don pass me o. Who go come to my aid? I no wan make anyhow rewire come reconfigure the car comot from the manufacturers specs. I remember I once tried to scan a friend's car who has his MIL on and the car won't start with the scanner connected. But when I removed it, the car started. I tried again with my former stand alone $30 scanner and the same thing happened. So I no wan that kind parole.

Is your car designed with a body system module? It's like a brainbox that controls most of the electronic parts in the car appart from the engine and transmission.

I can't say for sure. There is one other device that looks like a brain box on the center console under the dash but almost far from reach without removing the dash. I'll do a Google search on this body system module you just mentioned in relation to the car.
