lastpage:You took wise investment decisions.... But some banks no longer give loans to their staff for now and for existing loans, they don't write them off. Its almost impossible to work in a bank for 10 years nowadays...without being frustrated or tsunamied out. |

An ex banker with over six years working experience. I enjoyed myself while there as a marketer. Was relieved of my appointment with the then Oceanic (now Ecobank) plc, during the Sanusi reconsolidation era. I am out of banking into another new terrain and things are much better, bigger and brighter. I would not accept =N=1million as monthly salary to work in a bank now. @Op, the earlier you plan your exit, the better; but while there, put in your best, do what you can, satisfy your conscience and see how better things will come for you. Never speak ill of where you get your daily bread from; it has a way of working against you. That will be all for now. |

I used to be a banker. The experience was quite fascinating. I worked in the Energy department of UBA, Moved to Intercontinental to continue in Public sector Dept dealing with NNPC Account. This was eventually taken over by Access Bank whose process did not match my ideal work environment. I had to take the bold step to resign and got back in ICT which had always been my passion. I am Presently a webmaster for quite a number of organisations. I also design websites and conduct skill acquisition training ranging from Website development, Jingle production, and other professional training etc... 08035966124 www.kefmawin.com www.abujaconnect.com |

Well analysed. Ure too much bro quote author=Breadfruit post=38841651]Crazyman, 1forall. Please assist move this thread to front page so we can get as many views and opinions as possible. It's weekend and I'm thankful there is no training or MPR to take away my beloved 'me' time. I have learnt to appreciate times like this. I have been in a situation at work where I worked Monday to Monday. Guitarlife, I get you. But in a situation when some people get the job at 29 years, is it then feasible to leave at 30? Once you are there also, your plans to leave after a certain time fly out of the window. Your colleagues (the few who like you), your family, your friends advise you to get something else before you leave. Your boss tells you during the morning meeting that there is no job out there. You see the desperate customers who come with their CV to the bank telling you they wanna submit. Before you know it, your mentality becomes half bread is better than kulikuli. So you become stuck. Forgetting there are some opportunities being missed by remaining in the murky waters of banking....
|

Breadfruit:I agree with you but l think the loan is being restricted to Middle/top level Mgt ... which is very unfair! What l am saying is this: There will be situations where a Bank wants to retrench workers. Let say one of these workers have spent three years and his/her severance package is worth #1mill but he has taken a loan of #3Mill. The best they can do is to hold-on to his severance package but since they are the ones letting him go, where would they get the remaining 2Mill? In such situations (and l have seen a few), the bank will postpone that staff for "future" retrenchment knowing that they would suffer a 'huge' loss if they include that staff in the exercise or write it off. They have to make a choice, its their move. .... except in case of gross 'criminal' misbehaviour in which case the staff can be open to criminal prosecutions. Lastpage! |

I guess u work with the elephant. I can feel ur pain. But man hat survive. God will make this country better and employers will beg people for jobs like this author=musco4me post=38910065] Am a banker but i hate banking work so much. U cant even have time for urself and ur family. I never wanted to be a banker but unemployment pushed me to banking because i needed to survive. Am still thinking of other biz i will engage myself in and also lookn for a non banking job. Within the 2 and half years in bankn, i hv worked as funds transfer officer, customer service officer, headteller/Atm custodian. Keeping watch over the atm is the most stressful thing u can do if ur bank is a leading bank in nigeria and if ur branch has 3 to 6 atms that need serious attention due to so much traffics on them. I leave my house b4 6.30am so that i attend to atms and put them in order b4 8am wen monitoring starts. I still go home late cos u still have to wait till 6pm wen monitoring ends. Banking is not a job ooooooo. No weekend for u, no public holidays, u just work! Work! Work! I hate bankn and planning to quit very soon.
|

wow read soo many important point from experience bankers, well am also working in the bank as an operation staff, really its tuff and stressfull because you dont have time for any thing again in your life. the only 2days you have is been cut short with Saturday banking,Atm monitoring and also other major work that has to be done and with that your job is not still guaranteed. i have been in the system since 2010 and hoping to save enough before i leave them one day For aspiring banker, its not a bad profession because as work out from your house with only 100 naira in your pocket people just keep greeting you and hailing you because the believe banker never lacks. well i pray that i leave the banking work in peace because the way the Nigeria economy is now, the management are just looking for any silly excuse to lay off staff. |

isobayor:Bros, your head dey there no be small! I use to say apart from I.T ... anyoen can do a banking job with a weeks training! So, nothing special! ![]() The job is also regimented and the experience is not much to write home about.... in the wider scheme of things. Its like being a Non-Commisioned soldier... what else can you do after retiring if nor be security man? (okay, that was a bad joke, l respect our gallant officers pass that). But there is a big conflict here: You need to study and develop yourself as a banker but the job itself prevents you from doing this (Early resumption, every minute pressure and late closing hours .... l wont mention that some folks still manage to enter one correct Beer parlour on their way home at 9pm, after the hectic hold-Ups!)! ![]() How can you get home and read after that kind of day? So, how do you cope? Very string self-determination and a strong focus on your future! Online and weekend courses, use your annual leave to write exams as well. The sky is your limit Bruvda, l love what you did. keep it up. Lastpage! |

lastpage:Management has since learnt to curb that style by stopping staff loans. I've not heard of a tsunamied staff getting severance. I think at most they might get a month's pay. In fact, they tsunami right before the quarterly upfront payment. What happens though is that the sacked staff doesn't repay back the rent advance balance and the medical off the shelf allowance that was collected beginning of the year. Which a staff that wants to resign would have to pay back.... |

@ dkby, and musco4me, easier said than done. I can relate with musco4me, because when you change hands frequently, get ready to pay the attendant shortages on the machines. Caveat emptor. A word is enough for the wise. dkby: |

lastpage:Thank you Bro. But I must be sincere it was extremely difficult for me. During that time, I usually sleep @ wyse associates and go to work from there. On Saturday , I must have been in the lecture as early as 7 am and believe me I wont leave the class until sunday night. I practically didn't have life on of my own. This was done for a period of 2 years as I did both professional xams at the sametime. Glory be to God its all over. lastpage:Bro! Take it easy. From your ill-thought suggestion to present bank workers to secure larger quantity of loan from their banks to give them cover from being retrenched easily (a professional banker present/ex ought to know better that no bank will genuinely give you loan above your severance package without supporting collateral) to your lame claim of owning a plot of land you bought for 500k that now has worth estimate of 25m (I don't care when you buy the imaginary land since you said you have worked in the bank B/W late 90's to earlier 2000), I am in doubt if truly you have experienced bank work. |

musco4me:My brother, when I was Atm custodian, no be small fight with my A.M especially when Channel monitoring send that yeye report, so I ensured job rotation by constantly reminding the officer responsible to do the rotation or else I escalate. The truth is, I had my exit plan right from the day I joined the bank. E go better |

smasher1:Bros, I know a lot has changed these days. We even tired to unionizse back then and formed a football club! ![]() The lack of jobs have meant that desperate unemployed people are ready to endure any type of 'job conditions' thrown at them and the employers, especially these wicked generation of banker-owners and senior management, are taking undue advantage of our younger people. Loans are given based on your "level/Cadre" in a bank. A Manager with 5yrs on the job and one that was employed two yrs ago are "entitled and will get" the same "maximum" amount, if they apply for loan within their bank. .... but the one who has worked for five yrs, has a higher severance package as of that moment, if both are retrenched! But like its said, "If you pay Peanuts, you end up with Monkeys". We are no longer in the days when a staff will stick his neck out to save his bank.... If Armed Robber come, just jejely lead then to the Vault! Dont risk your life for an organisation that dont care about you! Anyway, just know how to manage your monthly income, every good thing comes to an end. Lastpage! |
