Try and get experience in a specialised unit of the branch like auditing, IT, risk management, internal control, coperate communications etc.

Then get some years of working experience , you can then come in as an experienced hire. That is the best approach if you ask me.

As a banker my social life is seriously derailed. not even time to put on my new casual wears and aso ebi except for fridays.
But honestly, i enjoy the respect and pride. Even in the face of degrading RESPECT for banking job, one can't still deny the fact that alot of people still av great respect for bankers. Today, banking job is ranked above many other jobs in Nigeria as its compared to OIL nad gas jobs. am proud... it's really exciting!

I will only urge those of us (the young ones) in the sector to have plans as regard the period to serve in the sector. Alot of opportunities awaits us out there. Pls lets not limit ourselves we can do better.. from my observations, i discovered our bosses are too relaxed on the job as the incentives and other benefits are really mindblowing which is making it difficult for them to take critical decisions that may help them grow more in life and even become employers of labour thereby reducing the unemployment rate in our dear country. Personally, i hate the idea of serving a company foerver. Are u not hopeful of creating a place where peolple can serve you too?

I wish those who are aspiring to become a banker one day all the best , i pray ur dreams come to pass and may God make you all a succesful BANKER. be rest assured that you are coming to the most respected sector in the country. cheers!
Good day sir.I'm barely 18 yrs and i plan to study finance in lasu,What are my chances of getting a good job in the banking sector if i graduate with a second class upper or lower? Also From your experiences what advice could you give me?And if you were me what would be your plans?
Please can anyone answer this?

Lol! I'm no sir, sir. I had asked a question much earlier too with no response yet.

However, I'll answer your questions with my own little knowledge of the industry. You'd be out of school at 22/23, with a degree in Finance, ceteris paribus. That's not bad at all. Try all you can to make a minimum of a 2.1, this is very key. While in school, maximize your free time and holidays by going for internships at banks or other relevant institutions. Lastly, work towards having your ICAN/ACCCA/CFA or qualifications from other relevant bodies. The standards are high these days. All the best!

Hello my friend, Frankly speaking, I don't even expect someone like you who aspires to be a banker to think of having a second class upper , how much more thinking of coming out with second lower. Plan for first class boy! Ok? First class! That way, you will work harder in school! If you graduate with a good grade from the university, your chances are high as banking sector seeks only most brightest candidates to employ. That being said, please have a mindset of being an employer of Labour, not only to remain an employee. Work under your employer just for few years, save enough money, start your own business early and get ready to be on Forbes list of world richest people in the world. I wish you the best in life. Cheers!

Wow I am very humbled by this .
Okay I was earlier in brn ops( counting cash) but I managed to move to IT about 6 months ago and I am presently learning very relevant skills to the programme I have decided to pursue at Ph.D level.
I am hoping to secure a scholarship for the Ph.D but I am yet to start applying. I am taking my time to learn very relevant areas of my future research. Hopefully in the not too distant future say a couple months from now I'd start pushing hard for the ph.d applications.

I am grateful for your care.

Hey bro! I have some questions for u. Hope you still here?

Most banks hardly employ experienced staffs, may be to cut salaries, they prefer trainee or internal replacement.... So what is the faith of ex bankers?

So I read this topic with kin interest.... I remember reading this topic some 3 years ago before delving into the banking industry... With high hopes and expectations.
So I was fortunate to get a Bank job immediately after service. I worked some months in one bank before moving to another where I worked for a period of 2 years and 8 months before my employment was terminated. Its important to note that before this happened I was termed a performer and a high flier, never received a query before, during appraisals, my branch manager stated that I was used as a benchmark to appraise my peers.
I was an operations staff, but my branch manager gave me tasks to carry out, I even sometimes work on MPR reports for the region, I was also able to create an excel template for monitoring our income generated and to easily detect errors in quoted amount when the general report was published across the bank. This my simple template was used to contest figures released in respect to our income generated, this simple template was then adopted across several branches.
I was nominated to be part of the project team when 2 major projects was to be deployed in the bank last year, I trained staff across Nigeria and got commendation from the Bank and was in line for a promotion.
A fraudster/impostor was able to beat our control checks and how no one was able to detect anomalies till the deed was done remains a mystery. This cost some of us our job in the branch. First ever oversight resulted in job termination. Some people are lucky to get caution, PIP, first written warning, second written warning etal... Some under performers and "laggards" remain on the job longer , all it takes is for one thing to go wrong and the performer is booted out. Banking is lovely when all is good, but things can change very quickly and without notice .
Hi brother, I am sorry about your plight, I hope you had sufficient savings.

Hmmmm. Guy, if ur an atm custodian in ................... Bank of Nigeria, u will be fightn daily with ur oga because of atm issues and the monitoring. I dnt want to mention the banks name. In this particular bank, atms are strictly monitored and any cash jam or no netwk or cash out on the atm at the wrong hour, ur oga go battle seriously wit u as if ur the cause. I still maintain my stand. I hate bankn but unemployment pushed me to bankn.

Not really... Just a little savings as I started my Masters last year , so used part of it for my fees , also used some funds for a family project.

I was however fortunate to get another Bank job 2 weeks after I was terminated through a connection I met on LinkedIn though this new banking role is as a contract staff (sad but at least there is something to do) I recently wrote and passed a graduate trainee test for another bank, awaiting interview. I can only hope for the best while I try to reboot my career and be a bit wiser this time.....

I don't see re-channeling ur effort in banking as wise. I was in ur shoe and it took me 47days to get a non banking job after my exit but more specialized role with ridiculous pay, what was more important was the experience I garnered. I immediately enrolled for my ICAN program and qualified within 1 year 6months then got a better job afterwards. And God Almighty above all. I am grateful to Him alone.

My Dad who’s worked in a bank before has told me so many times that “if you get a bank job, do well and garner experience and leave after say 3-4 years”.
