So they paid very good. A friend told me the pay was 20,000 naira. How were you able to use such little money for Msc program ?

legendgalas:
my brother, its not easy but I want to share my story.
I finished my service last year and immediately enrolled for msc degree in one of Nigerian universities. it was all the money I saved during my service year that I used in sponsoring the program. It will interest you to know that up till now, I'v not received a dine from anybody(parents included) but with God the program will come to an end next month.
So plan what you want and go for it with all your might with praises to God for keeping you alive.

I am a batch A corp member. This thought runz in my mind daily and the fear of going back to my parents house increases everyday because of the situation I find myself here in Ebonyi state where I am serving.

I am in urban area and corpers in urban area hardly have savings out of the 19800 naira because of the expenses. and the worst thing is that batch A corpers in public secondary schools have not been given a dime since we resume in June.

imagine me paying a NEPA bill of 1200naira for one month.

God I need your help. at least to renew my rent after service. its very embarrassing to go back to parents house after NYSC.

Hmmmm! embarassed

Op, I wish you God's best in every decision you take.

What works for Mr. A may not work for Mr. B and C.

Just like a Friend will always tell me '"Follow your Intuition""

You're the only one that can tell yourself the absolute truth.

Play your part, you could follow some very good advise on the thread, and trust God to perfect all that concerns you.

Do not compare yourself with anyone. You're a Unique Specie.

Above all, let there be ""DIGNITY IN YOUR LABOUR!!!

Cheers!

Exactly what happened to me some years ago when I was going for NYSC in Osun state. I am very happy today that I made that decision not to go back to my Parent. That is what changed my life. That singular decision is one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Below are things I did
Burn the bridge. When I was leaving for NYSC, I told my Parent point blank that I am not coming back to stay with them again. I will only visit them to greet them. They were shocked. They were thinking I was playing. Guess what, that is exactly what happened. I hated going back to them. I am the first born. they have trained me through University. why should I go back to them? so first, hate going back. That is what drove me to work out my life. I never regretted it.
Secondly, know that the good job may not come immediately after service. The question then is what will I be doing to keep me going after NYSC since I will going back to my Parents? Right from the first day, I stepped into Osun state for NYSC, I stopped thinking of NYSC. The only thing in my mind is after NYSC, what will I be doing. In the camp, I was asking questions. You have a talent. I love teaching. The day I left camp, I approached many JAMB/GCE lesson centres that same day by just asking people. Because something is in my mind. I am not going back. I must get something to be doing even after NYSC before the big job will come.
SAVE SAVE SAVE. Our allawe then was 6500 and later increased to 7500. I was saving. You must save every month from your allawe. Don't blow everything. Be prudent. Those savings will help you later.
Prepare for tests and interview. Buy aptitude test and interview books, GMAT. Read wide. Develop yourself.
Start applying for jobs from day one. Tuesday and Thursday Guardian was my friend. I don't have money to buy the newspapers as corper. I visit the local vendor as early as 6am to 7am every Tuesday and Thursday. I will give him 10 or 20 naira to scan through the newspaper before the buyers will start coming. I go with my pen and paper to write down vacancies. later, the vendor became my friend, he sometimes give me the newspaper to scan for free. I remember then, he will tell me, "no dirty am oo", dem de come buy am. I will say Oga, I hear. Most young people nowadays are very lazy. Nothing good comes easy. You have to work out your life. It is through this guy's newspaper I landed the good job I was looking for. Nobody helped me. My friends mocked me then, that I an SAN(senior applicant of Nigeria). I told them I am M-SAN(most senior applicant of Nigeria). Be applying, be writing test and be attending interview. You are getting experience.
Start little. Don't go for a costly well furnished accommodation. They gave me accommodation where I did my service. But from day one, I was asking around where I could get cheap accommodation where I will stay after my service. Eventually, I was able to get a good cheap one. If you are batch B for example, there will be some batch A corp members that their rent runs beyond their service period and they want to leave immediately. You can negotiate with them. That is how I got a good one
Above all, be prayerful. Bros, you need God to help you.
Doing all these, barely 3 months after my service, I got the lucrative job I was looking for. Today when, I look back, I feel happy and fulfilled not to have gone back. If I had gone back, I will not struggle the way I did and they will be feeding me 3 times a day. Maybe, I wouldn't have been here.

Well shared. much gratitude.

[quote author=Squad4 post=39000332]Go home to see them and relax a bit, then get a move on. Seek out opportunities try to get your first job, the pay is not important at this point...one thing i can advise is to find a private company that are into a field you have interest, offer to work free that you just need the experience, be passionate about your proposal. Trust me you will get in they would be forced to give you a stipend for transport and then work diligently, if something comes out, you will be the first person on the list to be considered and at the same time, your CV will read you are currently employed and in a good industry which will help you with other job applications.

Thank you so much! GBU abundantly. You just made my day.
But wait...o! Did you do this?

not really dearest, I was opportune to serve in a creek community in bayelsa state and to get to the nearest bank for withdrawal will cost us 5k. so we hardly feed on our allowee during my one year program cus no body fit risk to waste such amount. That was how I never touched the money, it will catch your interest that I was able to save over 280k during that period. pls learn to save so as to broaden your chances on how well to spend when the time arises.

Going back to my Father's House and Mummy's Pot after my service Year.

Sincerely, I've never stopped giving this a thought since I left home for service.
I have huge plans for my service year- Things I look forward to achieve, degrees, skills, contacts and so on. But above all, I look forward to starting life after my service year.
Now, this decision as we all know isn't one that comes on a platter. My reason for saying this goes thus:
1. To afford an apartment will require rentage and maintenance,
2. I'll have to earn to survive,
3. The Societal system doesn't trow jobs at your lap imidiately after service. Just to mention a few.

Some of you here on NL have been through this stage of life already and gracefully sufficed through.
What was your experience like and how did you finally get on your feet?
Do you subscribe to going back to my parent's after service?
Did you have to stay at your parent's while starting life outside?
What were the things you did during your service year that helped you in this area at the long run?

Opinions and Experiances would be grately appreciated.
My friend there's absolutely no need to start putting rentage in ur list yet even though ur parents live in a kiosk renting a house shud b in 2yrs time. you have first of all get a job then there are other minute responsibilities u shud put into consideration as u also try to save for ur house. cos the only place u can save cash as a bachelor is definitely in ur fadas hous

my brother I was a batch B corp member that passed out July this year, when it a month to pop I told some of my colleagues that am not going back home to stay with my parents, they where like why, I told them I can't stand the shame of looking them in the face everyday after training me to this level, I took that decision, my mum supported the idea with my younger ones, I renewed my rent of 20k from my savings during the service year, u bought food stuff and other necessary things I needed. at first it was hard n tough, boring and the shame all your friends gone but I kept on after about a month of staying at home I woke up one morning went to Aba enquired about how to supply suit and native wears and I thank God it has been favourable I also work in a fueling station but I know one day the dream job will come. its hard but you have to manage..drop your pride or ego (if you have any) B.Sc is over hyped in this country just try n do something good n useful.. wish you well by timi dakolo that's the song that encourages me.

Going back or not depends on your own plans and knowing yourself. You going back doesn't mean ure lazy or u won't make it and u not going back doesn't mean u will be a millionaire the following week, it all depends on u planning based on ur strengths. My elder bro came back but being a gifted child he didn't even spend one week b4 getting a juicy job with p and g, dude wasn't even satisfied so after some years he left for Shell where he earns mega bucks and his goal is even mightier than what he's doing. I finished service with batch B in July and I already av a Masters but I had to come back home but being here I can tell u I earn more than what my mates r earning, not boasting . I love ppl smelling nice so I just went into perfumes, body sprays , beauty products etc and d way I package am ehn u go think say na me be Tom Ford. Altho I did my MSc abroad, I still dey find better job but in d mean time I'm loving selling my stuffs cos I get to meet pretty working class females and I make money too. Just fashion out a Plan for yourself.

I appreciate.

op Don't waste ur savings on renting an apartment when u don't have a guaranteed job just yet. What if after getting the apartment and no job showed face even aftr a year, where do u think u will see cash to renew ur rentage?
My advice for u is to keep ur savings for going for job tests or for business whichever u decide to go with.

AS for me,I had the opportunity of staying back in the north in july, but was no way i was going to stay back and receive salary of 13k monthly. So i moved immdiately back to lagos that same day harmed with my savings for transportation to attend job tests. i started attending job tests and interview the following week and before two months i was gainfully employed. if u stay somewhere like lagos, u will know its wasteful to use ur nysc savings to get a job without any job in sight just yet. When u get employd u can always move anytime

Another reason why I find it hard imagining going back home is that my dad has a woman with him and last time I checked, she's in charge.

It depends on the environment... If u served in Lagos u intend to go back to ekiti e no make sense ooo... However if your parents dy lag and u serve for ekiti move even if u save 500k...except a pending job is dia.... u have to be conscious of the application of ur degree and prospects in the 2 area and make a smart choice either way you have to hustle, it's a phase...
