A member of the House of Representatives representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo federal constituency of Ebonyi State, Hon. Linus Okorie, has applauded the appointment of former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, as leader of 33-nation observer mission to the October 25, 2015, general election in Tanzania.
Okorie, who emerged victorious at the election petitions tribunal in Abakaliki last Tuesday, commended the Commonwealth for appreciating Jonathan’s democratic virtues, which he said is by extension, a commendation on the growth and development of democracy in Nigeria.
He noted that Commonwealth’s recognition of the Nigeria’s former president, barely five months after leaving office, is an indication that Jonathan is a true democrat whose style of administration and politics is enviable and a register in Africa’s political lexicon.
Okorie said by that singular appointment, Jonathan has achieved the status of a ‘Father of Nigerian Democracy’, and asked Nigerians to celebrate the former president’s undiminished legacies and the rule of law.
Jonathan was announced to lead the observation mission by the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Yahya Simba.
Announcing the development in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian capital, Simba said the mission would be made up of observers from Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe and the Pacific.
Speaking at a meeting jointly organised by the United Nations and the government of Tanzania to herald activities of the UN 70th anniversary, Simba stated that while Jonathan will lead the Commonwealth observer team, former Mozambican President, Armando Guebuza, will lead the African Union observer team.
