Photos: Archaeologists discover the city of Sodom & Gomorrah and it matches the biblical description

After decades of excavations, researchers believe they have finally found the ruins of the Biblical city of Sodom.

Experts investigating the region of Tall el-Hammam in Jordan believe the remains of a 'monstrous' Bronze Age city match the Biblical description of the city destroyed by God.

Not only would the site have been the largest city in the region, as described in the Bible, it is situated to the east of the River Jordan, dates back to between 3500 and 1540 BC and is thought to have been suddenly abandoned.

The majority of references made about Sodom and Gomorah appear in the Book of Genesis. The two locations were kingdoms situated on the Jordan River plain, just north of where the Dead Sea is now located, and are described in the bible as being plush, green and well-watered.

In particular, Sodom is one of the largest cities east of the Jordan referred to throughout the Book of Genesis and the New Testament.

It is described as being situated on a common trade route, and due to its size, it was said to have been heavily fortified with towers and tall, thick walls.

In the Bible, Sodom was said to have been destroyed by God after his angels failed to find righteous men within its walls. By comparison, the site, at Tall el-Hamaam, dates back to between 3500 and 1540 BC.

It is said to be the largest city that would have existed in the region - between five and 10 times larger than other cities in the area - making it an obvious choice for the site.

Steven Collins from Trinity Southwestern University in New Mexico, who has led the project, told Popular Archaeology it was a 'monstrous' city compared to others in the area from the same period.

Little was known about the Bronze Age in the south of the Jordan River Valley, before excavations began in 2005, but the huge city points to a sophisticated society.

His team claim to have found evidence of a city that was expanded and given defences of thick walls and ramparts, including a 5.2-metre thick mudbrick wall of 10 metres high.

The city was continuously expanded and fortified, with evidence for thick walls and ramparts, including one wall that was a 17ft (5.2-metre) thick and 32ft (10 metres) high.

This wall featured gates, watchtowers and at least one roadway.

During the middle Bronze Age, this wall was replaced by a huge, 23ft-wide (7 metre) rampart with a flat top that doubled as a ring road around the city.

The team believes the city they have discovered must be Sodom because evidence suggests it thrives on the banks of the river Jordan and was an important trade route, as described in the Bible.

Further evidence to support the claims is that Tall el-Hamaam was suddenly deserted at some point time towards the end of the middle Bronze Age.

'What we've got on our hands is an important city-state, major city-state that was, for all practical purposes, unknown to scholars before we started our project,' said Collins.

'Tall el-Hammam matches the description of the area where Sodom was located according to the Bible' as the largest city of the fertile east Kikkar area.

'So, I came to the conclusion that if one wanted to find Sodom, one should seek the largest city that existed in this area during the Bronze Age, in the time of Abraham. When we explored the region, Tall el-Hammam was an obvious choice, as it was five to 10 times larger than the other Bronze Age cities throughout the region, even those found beyond Jordan.'

Mr Collins said: 'We know very little about the Bronze Age in the south of the Jordan River Valley.

Most archaeological maps of the area were blank.

'It became an uninhabited wasteland for over 700 years but then, after those seven centuries, it started to flourish again – as indicated by the huge iron gate that leads into the city.'

This has been suggested because the researchers have found few artefacts from the late phase of the period in comparison to other settlements in the region.

The area remained deserted for around 700 years, after which the city was repopulated, evidenced by artefacts and remains of an Iron Age settlement.

Archaeologists involved in the project, led by Steven Collins from Trinity Southwestern University in Albuquerque, New Mexico, believe this evidence, when taken with the city's prime location, makes it the best candidate for Sodom.

'Tall el-Hammam seemed to match every Sodom criterion demanded by the text,' he told Popular Archaeology.

The destruction of Sodom, along with Gomorrah was recorded in numerous parts of the Bible, including Genesis and the New Testament, as well as in the Qur'an.

Read this entry from the Washingtonpost about the same news and make your conclusion.

There is little evidence that it's actually biblical Sodom.

Nothing much to see here, at last count there are at least 10 other sites with claims to be Sodom & Gomorrah, it seems the only criteria the archaeologists have engaged is the fact that they discovered the ruins on a river bank, therefore it must be S&G. No peer reviewed documents, no research nothing.

What is more they fail to make a distinction between what is clearly an abandoned city (perhaps due to warfare or water ran out e.t.c) and a city the bible says was completely obliterated with "fire and brimstone"

Actually, we should not be surprised. The Christian organisation known as Trinity Southwest University in New Mexico which sponsored the “archaeologists” have no educational accreditation whatsover.

Next stop, the discovery of Santas workshop in the N. Pole

I don't want to go into the Washingtonpost vs Dailymail thing. It can not be the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah simply because Lot's wife is not found any where there, the pillar of Lot's wife is in Israel as we are told, chiristian pilgrims travel there to see the said pillar of salt in Israel. This place is located in Jordan not Israel. The Tall el-Hammam is located Jordan and does not match Sodom and Gomorrah because of it's size. Beside the fact that it is a christian university that sponsored the expedition, it can not be said to be objective and credible. Learn to read things objectively please.

Your pretense to intellectual dishonesty is laughable ,to say the least.

One can always forgive simple ignorance, but There is nothing more repugnant than dishonesty.

If you honestly reread the length and breadth of the articles you posted, the first thing that strikes you is that the claims are coming from a Christian university.
Does anyone honestly expect an objective scientific research, analysis and conclusions from a FAITH- based institution

Number 2, the guy in question is more circumspect in his description of his findings and research than you would have us believe.

Examine his words carefully.
He says " He BELIEVES" that it matches the Bible's description of Soddom and Gomorrah.
He never concludes that it is definitely Sodom and Gomorrah. He cannot, simply because there isn't a shred of evidence to do that.

In other words, what we are left dealing with here is simply another expression of his faith.

From the outline and topography of my village, it could very well match the description of any biblical city or village.

Every once in a few months ,Pius fraudsters masquerading as archeologists attempt to pull one stunt or another to shore up the dwindling faiths of the sheeple.

The funny thing, and for which I don't blame kingebukasblog, is that low level frauds like this are manufactured exclusively for the low IQ, the sheeple, the kingebukasblog of Christendom.

Faith- based institution ? WTH ... Even in non-religious discoveries the word "believe" is used . My acknowledgment of this as a valid discovery isn't an obnoxious display of credulity in any form because it clearly stated that it matches the biblical description . I thought atheists would be utterly skeptical about it but comments on the article showed otherwise .

According to Mr. P , we should not accept evidence if it involves archaeological discoveries concerning Religion . Pfft ...

A quick example is used here

No doubt it is a good dig, any such find is welcome as it helps us understand antiquity better, but there is not a shred of a justification to conclude that the place is S&G, besides wishful thinking and it just seems that every time a Christian fundamentalist sponsored archaeologist stubs his toe on a piece of old pottery, it has to be the cup of Abraham or the potty of Moses.

The majority of references made about Sodom and Gomorah appear in the Book of Genesis.

Plush, green and well watered ? lol.
That sounds like 10 million places on Earth.

Again the article stated :

The two locations were kingdoms situated on the Jordan River plain, just north of where the Dead Sea is now located, and are described in the bible as being plush, green and well-watered.

Correction : Sodom IS one of the largest cities east of Jordan , OR Was described as being one of the largest cities east of Jordan ?
You have watch your grammar. undecided

Mr. P I didnt write the article , Dailymail did

Biggest piece of cow dung masqurading as a scientific paper for the low IQ.

This article contains so much hot gas, that if released and harnessed, it could solve Nigeria's electricity problem overnight.

Mr. P , I clearly expected a more elaborate rebuttal and not some egregious hurriedly written whatever - not even fit to be given a second look - you just put up there .

Please sir , read the original article on Dailymail (click on the link) , then read the comments ... and bring forth a fair argument - something worth paying attention to . Thanks smiley

How will this discovery help to alleviate humanity's numerous problems? Unused money should be forwarded to NASA to aid them in scientific exploration.

I don't why people should waste resources in order to proof that their gods had once or is still in existence, when the best is for IT to make its impact felt.

Do you complain when much money is spent in trying to prove the evolution theory and the big bang ? DO you know how much money is spent on space exploration ? Apart from knowledge , what have you gained from all these ?

Please stop being biased , its very pathetic

Christian thinking: the only true science is science that confirms my God's word. Anything else that doesn't makes science satanic and devilish.

Scientist explore space to find alternatives. Christians explore ancient ruins to proof a myth.

Which is more beneficial and worth funding?

I never said that abeg . Religion aside . Isn't it overwhelming when such discoveries are made ? Why are you guys rebuffing such a discovery because it involved proofing the authenticity of the S & G ?
