However this time it was not as bad:

1) Now I had somewhere to sleep and enough garri to last me for 10 recessions, 3 Nuclear Wars and 1 Lifetime
2) I had 79,900 and would have had over 80,000 if the foolish UBA did not keep using my money to buy recharge cards. (Caveat: if you add bank to the end of UBA na you sabi)
3) Now I had some skill in (and the most important part: I had built a product that I could sell for money)

Now I am not a religious person, I believe in GOD and that's it. I read the Quran and I read the Bible and I try to be a good neighbour. I was still thinking of all the things I wanted to do to juliet if I ever saw her again self. But I Prayed for that Thieving, Conniving, Looting, Exploiter of a boss and moved on with my life.

I took a bus to Asaba, to meet a client of my former boss and I sold the product I built for 615 thousand but I was so naive I used the money to pay for an office and employ a secretary and two support staff. (Learner: I thought I was going to be the next google)
Salaries, utilities and 3 months later I was back to my lifetime of Garri and LESS than N1,000.
I had Locked the future google office and sold the computers for almost free to raise cash, And I could not sell the furniture for half the price I bought them.
At this point in my life there was no more spark in me, I WAS living from hand to mouth and there was no Job or succour in sight. This was the point in my life where if some devil had said to me "give me your sperms for riches" I would have given him my testes, manhood, and urine as well.

Then one saturday morning I was having "Kwese and Koi Koi" ('Akara and Pap/Akamu') at my girlfriend's shed close to my house. When I got a call from a +61****** number

(My darling Amara: May you Rest Beautifully, You had the most beautiful personality I have ever known, and remained a light in my darkest years.)

+61****** ? Which country code is this self? A part of me said I should not pick, it is one of this foolish marketing agencies, Nevertheless I picked (Blame it on the african in me). Lo and behold it was Dr. Francesca!

She told me her husband was in Nigeria months back and discovered all that transpired and they tried getting in touch with me but could not. She asked me what I was doing, and asked that I send my credentials.

5 months later I was abroad studying software engineering free of charge; Eating vegetables and cheese.

NB: Sorry for the protracted delays in updating this post: I currently work as a senior software engineer for a company and we are in crazy season (ship it season). So I barely have time to do anything at all.

This is my story! Albeit a shortened version. I mixed concrete, worked farms, peddled drinks, menial things that for the sake of time and memory I can not list all.

This is meant to inspire, I am not bragging: Forbes rated my organization in the top 10 (where I work), my salary is not in Mark Zuckerberg territory but it is good enough. I have built open source projects that have been monetized into millions of Naira.

Who am I? A disowned former medical student who had only N22,500 and GOD on his side.

Keep coding, Keep Learning, Don't engage in Python vs Scala arguments (The best lisp programmer is more valuable than a mediocre programmer who knows C, R, Java, C#, Yoruba++, Kungfu, Perl, and Haskell), read source code, read documentations, pick your problems, keep at it, if you believe in GOD trust Him to take you to where you want to be. If you don't GOODLUCK.

Cheers!
A Gutsy Programmer

NB: I don't look down on lisp o! before someone insults my unborn children

Hmn, interesting and nicely written too. You really tried, and I do hope that this will go a long way to inspire other people too.

My own story too started similar to yours, but I ended up studying and graduating as a medical doctor, while i still retained my dhtml hashtag.

How have life been as a programmer?

Is there any regret?

How are you doing financially as a programmer to medical doctor?
Re: Tales Of A Gutsy Programmer by Nobody: 6:18pm On Oct 25, 2015
Programming all the way, no time for my medical career yet. In fact, as i was finishing NYSC, its full-time programming, and it has been financially rewarding - otherwise i will just dust my certificate and go and look for hospital work. No regrets at all, still dhtml all the way. . . . .

I'm trying to imagine you, Anthony, in a lab coat, sneaking into random wards and causing havoc -- replacing injection serums with methylated spirit sounds a lot like what'd be your preoccupation.

Wreaking havocs all over the wards like some gaddamn troll unleashed, that would be certainly like dhtml18 but not Anthony. It is a case of dr jekyll and mr hyde!

Well... this is highly subjective and things worked out for me. I believe in GOD and I believe HE brought me here.
My salary is good. Better than oil companies kind of good but lower than International Airline Captain kind of good, I absolutely love what I do and would program for free and I do... I have a couple of open source projects I give out freely to some organizations, free as in 'freedom of speech' free, and I am making more money that all of my past school mates I still keep in touch with, but this does not mean there might be some that are not doing better than I am.

I know of programmers that earn much less than doctors and I earn less than some doctors do in the country where I currently work. Salary and finance should never be a determinant of what direction you choose to follow in life, what happens when you face challenges that overcome the finances at that time. Passion should preserve you in a field so you will be motivated to get back up and keep riding when you fall off the horse.

I am closer to my family now than I ever was, My father died before he could see me reach where GOD is taking me, thus I have shouldered a lot of responsibility. The condition of reconciliation was that I go back to study medicine. If not for my sponsors it might have taken longer for me to visit my family and mend broken ties.
