Yeah, it appears the guy was trying to defend himself.

But there are so many unnecessary violence because policing system is not working well.

The matter supposed to be reported to police by the girlfriend instead of the guy's friends beated him up that led to the death of a man.

Anywhere in the world, if a man came against you with a knife, broken bottle or any form of weapon with a motive to harm you, whatever you do to turn the table around is self defence and it is allowed under any law. Another good thing here is that there are witnesses who could corroborate his statement. If his story is true, he has broken no law.
